4 Easy Ideas for Salty-Sweet Chocolate Chip Cookies

4 Easy Ways to Make Salty-Sweet Chocolate Chip Cookies | 3 Garnets & 2 Sapphires
Whether you have a killer chocolate chip cookie recipe or use refrigerated cookie dough like me, sometimes you just want something different.  I am a huge fan of salty-sweet snacks, so I experimented with different ways I could turn classic chocolate chip cookies into a salty-sweet treat.

If you want to surprise your family, then give one of these easy options a whirl!  All you need to do is add one of these savory foods to your chocolate chip cookie dough before baking.  I just push them right into the scoops of cookie dough while they're on the baking sheet.

4 Salty Foods to Add to Your Chocolate Chip Cookies . . .

1.  Salted pretzels pieces were one of my children's favorites.  We always have pretzels on-hand, so I just broke them into small pieces and they were ready to use!

2.  Salted cashews are a favorite in our house and they're less costly when you buy them in halves and pieces.  They are not too hard and are perfect to add to cookies.  (Please do not try if someone in your household has a nut allergy.)

3.  Crumbled bacon was a huge hit with my family.  They are all bacon-lovers, but were skeptical about bacon in their chocolate chip cookies.  They were pleasantly surprised!  You could also try crumbling freshly cooked bacon, but it would be best to drain off as much grease as possible before crumbling and adding to the cookie dough.

4.  Corn chip pieces (not tortilla chips) turned out to be very tasty in chocolate chip cookies.  I also tried these corn snacks, but they weren't quite salty enough and they were too light and crispy to add the amount of oomph I was looking for.

Mrs. Fields Gift Baskets for Mother's Day, Father's Day, or Anyday

Last Friday afternoon, my husband officially started his week off from work.  He was looking forward to a week of quiet and rest during the days while the children are in school.  I wanted to give him a "happy week off" gift, so I ordered a basket of treats from Berries.com for him to enjoy during his time off.  (I also wanted to soften the blow for when I revealed his honey-do list for the week.)

I had no idea that Shari's Berries offered other goodies besides gourmet dipped strawberries and other dipped treats.  There were tons of great gift ideas for Mother's Day and Father's Day.  What caught my eye were the gift baskets in the Mrs. Fields Shop.  How can you go wrong with cookies and mini muffins, whether you are giving a gift, trying to cheer someone up, or sending a heartfelt thank you?

I ended up choosing the Mrs. Fields Bites Basket, which contained assorted bite size cookies, cookie bars, and mini muffins.  For freshness, all the baked goods came in sealed packages in addition to the shrink wrap around the basket itself.  Although the description listed brownie bites to be included in this basket, we did not receive any, which I found to be odd.  We ended up receiving bar cookies, which was not listed in the description.  I suppose the contents must vary based on what is on-hand when the baskets are packed.

I knew that my husband would be looking forward to trying the mini muffins first.  I was quite surprised when he told me that the cookies were exceptional and completely blew away the muffins.  I suppose that's why Mrs. Fields is so famous for her cookies.

If you are thinking about sending a gourmet gift to someone in the near future, be sure to check for Shari's Berries coupon codes and special offers before you shop.  There are currently discounts for orders as little as $29.  Also be sure to plan ahead so you can avoid paying extra for expedited delivery.  Shari's Berries delivers Monday through Saturday.

Also checkout our gourmet dipped strawberries and cake pops review.

Thank you to Shari's Berries for providing a complimentary product sample for us to base this review upon.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Sandwich Cutters Make Great Cookie Cutters!

Since my days are usually quite busy, I actually had to schedule in time to bake cookies for Valentine's Day.  Monday was a snow day, so I thought it would be the perfect time to make sugar cookies for the children to decorate.  I blocked off the time between 3:00pm and 5:00pm to bake these cookies, so that they would be cool enough to decorate either before or after dinner.

Come 3 o'clock, I started to get everything ready.  I had the refrigerated cookie dough, 2 cans of frosting, pink and white sprinkles, chocolate sprinkles, and 3 anxious children.  The only thing I could not find were the cookie cutters.  My cousin had given me a huge tub of cookie cutters that covered every occasion.  I remember giving the tub to my husband to store away for me since I did not have room in the kitchen cabinets, but I could not recall where he ended up putting them.  By now, the time was ticking away.

Then I saw my heart and bear-shaped sandwich cutters sitting in the drying rack and thought to myself, "Why not?"  The heart sandwich cutter turned out to work great!  From now on, I'm just going to buy sandwich cutters since they are the perfect size for sandwiches and cookies.  Why spend the extra money on cookie cutters, when sandwich cutters can do both jobs?

No, I didn't have time to try out the teddy bear sandwich cutter, but definitely will next time.

Happy Valentine's Day!!!

3 Easy Ideas for Using Leftover Candy Canes

Every single year after Christmas, I find myself with an abundance of sweets.  We currently have a pile of brownies (from 3 different people), homemade fudge, 4 boxes of chocolates, 2 boxes of cookies, plus an assortment of homemade cookies.  We also have a basket filled with individually wrapped Holiday chocolates and truffles.  That basket used to include many candy canes until I decided to do something about it.

That something was crushing them all.  I simply put them all unwrapped into a durable sandwich bag and smashed them with a mallet.  It was so easy (and therapeutic too)!

3 Uses for Crushed Candy Canes . . .

1.  When baking chocolate chip cookies, take your ball of cookie dough and roll them in the crushed candy canes before placing them on the pan.  When doing so, it's best to keep the number of large pieces of candy cane to a minimum and to press the ball of dough slightly after placing it on the pan.  Doing both these things will help your cookies to spread into a round shape, rather than an irregular shape.

2.  Stir a teaspoon or so of crushed candy cane into your hot coffee, tea, or cocoa.  The finer the candy cane is crushed, the more easily it will dissolve in your hot beverage.

3.  Sprinkle the crushed candy cane as a topping over whipped cream.  This would work great on almost anything you top with whipped cream.  You can also sprinkle the crushed candy cane directly on top of classic ice cream flavors, such as chocolate, vanilla, or coffee.

What ideas do you have for using leftover candy canes?

Nonni's Salted Caramel Biscotti

If you or someone you know is a fan of salted caramel, then you must consider adding Nonni's Salted Caramel Biscotti to your shopping list.  Each ready-to-wrap box contains a tray of 8 individually wrapped biscotti.  This sweet treat contains chewy caramel pieces inside a crisp cookie topped with drizzled chocolate and salt.  They really look and taste so decadent, that it's difficult to believe that they are only 100 calories each.

I am always stumped for ideas about what small gifts I can give to the neighbors, the mail carrier, the UPS driver, and our school bus driver.  Nonni's Salted Caramel Biscotti would make the perfect alternative to the usual box of chocolates.

(Click any photo to enlarge)

These salted caramel biscotti also look quite elegant served with coffee or tea.  I think a wrapped tower of several varieties of Nonni's Biscotti topped with a large bow would make a beautiful hostess gift!  You can view all the varieties available plus find freebies and special offers on www.Nonnis.com, the Nonni's Biscotti Facebook page, and the Nonni's Biscotti Pinterest boards.

Thank you to Nonni's for providing complimentary product samples for us to base this review upon and for providing additional product for our contest prize.

Silly Monkey Stories: I'll Raise You a Cookie

Each day after dinner the kids tell us what they want for dessert. There is ALWAYS a barter session going on between them and Karen and me. This past week one particular exchange between Luke and I stood out.

Me: "Luke, you can have two cookies"

Luke: "Can I have three cookies?"

Me: "Why should I give you three cookies?"

Luke: "Because I can eat three cookies" (very matter of factly)

I almost fell over laughing and he nearly got that third cookies. How can you argue with logic like that?

Martha Stewart's Chocolate-Peppermint Cookies Recipe

Challenge Butter is a leading butter company who has responded to the need for natural dairy products by stopping the use of synthetic hormones in their cows. Challenge Butter comes in many varieties that are safe, natural, and delicious. This brand of butter is available nationwide at many major retailers.

We have been using Challenge Butter in our family recipes for some time because it is competitively priced, tastes great, and leaves out all the synthetic stuff that I think is harmful to my family. Below, I listed my most recent recipe I’ve made using Challenge Butter: Chocolate-Peppermint Cookies. These cookies are fairly easy to make and are a great Christmas cookie to share at family gatherings.

Challenge Butter has launched a “Real Heritage Recipe Contest” where they are asking YOU to submit your favorite family recipes for a chance to win GoodCook cookware ($500 value) and $2500 cash. In addition, 12 finalists will win $250 in GoodCook cookware.

To enter, visit the Challenge Butter Facebook page and share your favorite recipes using Challenge Butter. The deadline for submission is January 3, 2012. To see if Challenge Butter is available in your area, visit ChallengeDairy.com.

Recipe:  Chocolate-Peppermint Cookies
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup all-purpose flour, plus more for surface
½ cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
5 Tablespoons Challenge Butter (unsalted), softened
¾ cup sugar
1 large egg
1 large egg yolk
¾ teaspoon pure peppermint extract
8 large candy canes or 30 peppermint candies, crushed
2 pounds white chocolate, coarsely chopped

1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Sift flour, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt into a bowl. Beat butter and sugar with a mixer on medium-high speed for 1 minute. Reduce speed to medium-low, and add egg, then yolk, beating well after each addition. Beat in peppermint extract. Slowly add flour mixture, and beat until just incorporated. Shape dough into two disks, wrap each in plastic wrap, and refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hour (or up to 2 days).

2. Roll out 1 disk of dough on a lightly floured surface to 1/8-inch thickness. Freeze until firm, about 15 minutes. Using a 2-inch round cutter, cut out circles, and place 1 inch apart on baking sheets, sprayed with cooking spray or lined with parchment paper. Roll and cut scraps only once. Freeze until firm, about 15 minutes. Repeat with remaining disk.

3. Bake until cookies are dry to the touch, about 12 minutes. Transfer cookies to wire racks lined with wax paper and let cool.

4. Crush the peppermint candies in a bag. Melt chocolate in a bowl until creamy. Dunk cookies into melted chocolate. Using a fork, coat both side thoroughly, letting excess drip off, then move to wax paper. Sprinkle with peppermint candy (I also used mini peppermint marshmallows) while chocolate is still wet. Refrigerate until set, about 3 hours.

Holiday 2010 Giveaway: Gift Baskets & Goodies from 1-800-Baskets ($50 GC) [CLOSED]

For friends and family that live far away, I have always loved to order gourmet foods and gift baskets that the whole family can enjoy. 1-800-Flowers, 1-800-Baskets, and The Popcorn Factory is all on one website, so you can order from all three and only have to checkout once. Take a look at some of the gourmet food gifts my family received to sample from this trio . . .

Let us start with my absolute favorite . . . the Fannie May Mint Meltaways! These delicious mint chocolates really do melt in your mouth. I have not decided yet if the milk chocolate coating is my favorite or the pastel. I think I am leaning towards the creamy pastel. The box is nearly empty, so I will need to make up my mind soon.

Everyone in our house just loved the 3-way popcorn tin from The Popcorn Factory. How can you go wrong with popcorn, especially in a household with children? I actually do not see this Poinsettia 3-Way Tin on the website any longer, but there is a 4-Way Holiday Popcorn Tin available.

The Cheryl's Frosted Holiday Cut-out Cookies is ideal for sending to anyone who is on-the-go, whether it is a family with children or a busy office. Cheryl's cookies are decadently delicious and individually wrapped for freshness. They can be packed in a lunch box or in a briefcase to put a smile on someone's face in the middle of the day.

The Comfort & Joy Sweet Treats Gift Basket (pictured at the top) is perfect for an individual. There is a sampling of popular gourmet sweets, such as Guirardelli chocolate squares, a Harry London chocolate-covered pretzel, toffee, a jumbo hand-pulled candy cane, and more. I seriously have not opened this basket yet because I need to figure out how to share it with the other four members of my household. Maybe if I hide it, everyone else will forget about it after awhile. Then I could have it all to myself!

1-800-Flowers, 1-800-Baskets, and The Popcorn Factory offers expedited shipping nationwide for your convenience. Visit any of these sites to see the full line of gourmet gifts and holiday floral arrangements while you are considering what to send your friends and family this year.

Thank you to 1-800-Flowers for sending us complimentary product samples to base this review upon and for providing an additional product for our contest prize.

Holiday 2010 Giveaway: Donate Gingerbread Houses to Children's Hospitals [CLOSED]

There are countless opportunities to make charitable donations during the holiday season. If you are short on time, it is always easiest to donate when it has been made convenient to you, such as adding a donation to your purchase total when checking out in a store. With this in mind, The Swiss Colony has created a way for you to donate a Gingerbread House to a child in a hospital in the approximate area of the shipping address just by purchasing one of their most popular products . . . the 72pc Swiss Colony Petits Fours. If you are shipping this gift directly to the recipient, then the donation will be made in the recipient's name, which makes the gift that much more thoughtful and special.

To my husband's delight, we were sent a box of 24 assorted petits fours, in addition to the new Swiss Colony Melting Snowmen Cookies. Both came in a decorative shipping box with beautiful packaging inside . . . perfect for gift giving or serving to your guests.

I could see why my husband is such a big fan of these petits fours. They combine the best of two worlds . . . cake and Swiss chocolate. My favorite was the Lemon Mist!

The box of 10 snowmen cookies were a huge hit with the whole family. The chocolate cookies inside were thin and crisp, but not too sweet. To my children's delight, the snowman faces were sculpted of frosting.

If you would like to order The Swiss Colony 72pc Petits Fours, which retail for $29.95 per box, in order to have a Gingerbread House donated to an anonymous child in an area hospital, visit SwissColony.com . One box of 72 petits fours would be the perfect gift for an entire household, especially for families and friends that live far away. You will brighten the Christmas of one hospitalized child for each box of petits fours you order. The Swiss Colony sends up to 10,000 Gingerbread Houses to children's hospitals every year.

Thank you to The Swiss Colony for sending us complimentary product samples to base this review upon and for providing an additional product for our contest prize.

Holiday 2010 Giveaway: Ann Clark Ltd. Cookie Cutter Gift Sets [CLOSED]

At Ann Clark Ltd., they specialize in cookie cutters for all occasions. Based in Vermont, Ann Clark, the person, started her company with a small ornament and a dream of success. As is the story with most small businesses, she turned her small hobby into a thriving business. In 1991, she set up a booth at a Philadelphia Gift Show with six designs of cookie cutters and other hand-made crafts and she came home with $3,500 in orders. That was how Ann Clark, the person, became Ann Clark Ltd., the business.

All these years later, Ann’s creativity and love for baking has turned into a beautiful line of handcrafted cookie cutters and associated giftware and has made her company the largest cookie cutter business in the industry. Her small dream has become her big reality.

Ann Clark Ltd. was nice enough to send me the Cookie for Christmas Gift Set to use. This adorable set of six tin cookie cutters comes packaged in a sturdy gift box. Each set comes with the artwork of Ann Clark and recipes for cookies and frosting. This cookie cutter set includes a Christmas tree, holly leaf, candy cane, snowflake, star and bell. I made the project into a group activity and involved not only my own children, but the daycare kids too. We all had a blast making peanut butter cookies and cutting out the shapes. I was impressed with the quality of the cookie cutters; they are very solid and sturdy and will not wear out or break for a long time. The kids loved working on Christmas stuff well before the holiday and loved getting their hands dirty and helping cut out the fun shapes. With 7 kids “helping” me, I did not get any pictures of the making process, but did get some of the final outcome. They are not perfect, but were tasty and the kids were just thrilled with them.

You can see all of the Ann Clark Ltd. products, including more cookie cutter gift sets, on the website AnnClark.com . This particular set retails for $14.99. Through the end of 2010, you can save 10% off your purchase on AnnClark.com when you checkout with Code: BLGA34.
