Free Comic Book Day Falls on Saturday, May 4th This Year (May the 4th Be With You!)

Thank you to DC Entertainment for providing complimentary product samples to facilitate this post.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Nothing feeds an imagination like comic books, for both the young and the old. I read hundreds of comic books as a young adult and can say they brought me to some amazing places. As you can imagine, I am thrilled that my oldest son, Jake, is starting to share the same passion.

My son, however, gets to enjoy something that was not available when I was his age: Free Comic Book Day! This coming Saturday, May 4th, is the 11th annual Free Comic Book Day. Comic book retailers, publishers, distributors, and suppliers throughout the country come together to promote this wonderful event.

Every participating shop will have books available to give away for free, no strings attached. What books and how many that will be available for free will vary, and of course supplies are limited. I plan to bring Jake to our local shop first thing in the morning to make sure we get something special.

The timing of this Free Comic Book Day is also unique. The new Superman Unchained comic series, as well as the feature film Man of Steel, will roll out over the coming months, what a perfect time to start Jake's collection of Superman comic books.

Checkout what exciting comic books young comic fans have to look forward to on Free Comic Book Day from DC . . .

Another aspect of this particular Free Comic Book Day that excites me is the very date it falls on: May 4th. Some of you astute science fiction fans will connect that date with Star Wars. It is of course Star Wars Day (May the 4th be with you!). There are some amazing Star Wars comic book series published and I can’t wait to show them to Jake this Saturday!

Visit www.freecomicbookday.com to find a participating comic book store near you.

Holiday Gift Idea: DC Comics Super Villains "The Joker's Last Laugh" DVD

I really like the 2-disc DVD DC Comics Super Villains: The Joker's Last Laugh because it's a collection of cartoons based on comics.  The characters that I recognized were The Joker, Batman and Robin, Superman, and Lex Luthor.  The characters I did not recognize were Harley, Poison Ivy, and Lois Lane.  I think the Joker's assistant Harley is really nervous because she almost panics a lot of the time.  I think Poison Ivy is very pushy.  My favorite character is Batman because he is very strong and he is really brave.

My favorite episode is "Christmas With the Joker."  The characters that appear in this episode are Robin, Batman, and The Joker. I like this episode because The Joker was really funny.  He eventually got arrested and the goods won.  There was a lot of action in this episode, like when Batman and Robin defeated The Joker's robots.

I think this DVD is good for ages 6 and up.  This would be a good Christmas present because it brings a lot of laughter to the people watching it.

The DC Comics Super Villains: The Joker's Last Laugh is new for 2012 and retails for $19.98.  It is currently selling on Amazon for $14.99 with Free Super Saver Shipping.

Free Printables: DC Comics Super-Villains Poster plus Fun Activity

When my children play pretend, none of them want to be the bad guy.  They all want to be on the side of good because the good guys always win, right?  Even though my children always root for the super heroes, they still think the super-villains are pretty cool.  I wonder how they would do at this fun activity, which asks you to name all the DC Comic villains pictured in the poster.  Personally, I can recognize several from the Batman movies plus Lex Luthor, but that's about it.

How do you think your children would do?  Or even you for that matter?  Print out the poster and the answer key below to find out!

TO PRINT:  Make sure your computer's printer is turned on and ready to print.  Click on the desired image to enlarge.  Then right-click on image and select print.  Use your browser's back arrow to return to this page.

Holiday 2011 Giveaway: Green Lantern Figure & 4 DC Super Hero Comics

Our nearly 8 year old son is no stranger to the members of the Justice League.  Between our 3 children, we have multiple Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman action figures, and now we have added Green Lantern to that collection.  One thing our oldest son has not experienced is the art of DC comic books.  He has read a small handful of children's graphic novels, but none of them offer the do-good action of the Justice League.

Our son's first four DC comics are exclusively found in specially marked boxes of Big G cereals.  Of the four, he said his favorite was #4 "Breakout!" because Aquaman and Batman prevailed against the bad guys even though they were outnumbered.  I like the fact that he is pleased when the good guys win.

If you think your child would enjoy these comics, for a limited time, you can find 1 of the 4 in each specially marked box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, Honey Nut Cheerios, Trix, Golden Grahams, Reese's Puffs, and Cocoa Puffs.  Your children can collect all four and trade with their friends to complete their set.
