Easy DIY Personalized Duck Tape & Washi Tape Poly Bookmark Craft (Free Printable Templates)

DIY Personalized Duck and Washi Tape Poly Bookmarks - Free Printable Templates
The time has finally arrived when every member of our household is reading books that they cannot necessarily finish in one sitting.  In preparation of this, Santa put two bookmarks in each of our children's stockings last Christmas.  Unfortunately, most of those bookmarks have vanished into a black hole somewhere.  (I think it may be the same one that mysteriously makes single socks disappear from the washer and dryer.)  In any case, I came up with a fun and easy way to solve our problem of never having a bookmark around when we need one . . .

This easy DIY bookmark craft uses Duck Tape, Washi Tape, and Tapeffiti along with poly folders.  I chose to use poly folders because they are colorful, more durable than cardstock, easy to cut with scissors, and are fairly inexpensive.  I got mine on sale for $0.69 each and one folder can make up to 10 bookmarks if you remember to use the pockets inside too.  This craft would be a fun rainy day activity!  It would also be perfect for a classroom craft or birthday party activity, especially if you cut out the bookmark shapes and the ribbon pieces in advance.  You could even make these to pass out as end-of-the-year students gifts or as party favors.  What a fun way to promote literacy!

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

patterned and solid tape (both wide and narrow)
poly folders (in colors that work with your tape)
computer printer
scissors
pen or pencil
standard size single hole puncher (needed for 2 of the 3 styles)
1/8" wide ribbon, yarn, or twine (needed for 2 of the 3 styles)
thin permanent markers (optional)

Step 1.  Print out the bookmark templates I have created for you.  (To print, be sure your computer's printer is on and ready to go.  Then click on the image below to enlarge it.  Right click on the image and select "print."  Then use your browser's back button to return to this page.)

Step 2.  Carefully cut out one or more of the bookmark templates.  If applicable, using your single hole puncher, punch a hole through the black circle in the template(s).

Step 3.  Place the template on your poly folder and trace the shape with a pen or pencil.  Be sure to trace the punched out circle too, if your template has one.
TIP #1:  I started by cutting out the pockets from inside the folder.  They can be used to make one bookmark each.

Step 4.  Cut out the shape you've traced.  If applicable, punch out the circle you've traced with a single hole puncher.

Step 5.  After you've selected which tapes you would like to use for your bookmark, cut a piece of tape about 6" long.  Then position the tape on the front of your bookmark as desired and wrap the ends around the back of the bookmark.  (For a neater appearance, make sure the edges match up where the ends meet.)  Repeat this as many times as you need to create a design you like.  Be sure to experiment with other ways to use your tape, such as creating a frame with it.
Tip #2:  One of the perks about using these poly folders is that, with most types of tape I've tried, the tape can be removed and repositioned if it is not exactly as you would like it.

Step 6.  For the bookmarks with a hole at the top, cut a piece of 1/8" ribbon, yarn, or twine approximately 10" to 12" long.  Then fold it in half and thread the loop end through the hole in the back of the bookmark.  Pull the loop out the front of the bookmark, then feed the two ends through the loop.  Pull tightly to complete your knot.  Tie another knot right at the top of the bookmark for added security.
Tip #3:  You can get creative with this by using multiple colors of ribbon, adding beads, or making a tassel at the end.

Step 7.  Personalize your bookmark with a name, initial, or a monogram using tape or permanent marker.

This craft comes with a warning . . . I started out with a just few rolls of tape and now need to think of a way to store the many rolls I've purchased since.  I may be addicted, so look for more patterned tape crafts in the coming months!

Free Printable: 69 Sight Words Flashcards for 1st Grade

We had discovered last year that our youngest son learns differently, so we need to work with him at home daily to help him succeed in school.  One of the main things he struggles with is reading.  He is now in first grade and will be turning 7 in January.  Last year, I made kindergarten sight words flash cards and they seemed to help him quite a bit.  Now that the school year is well-underway, I have created a new set of flash cards for 1st grade sight words.  If your child could use some extra help in this area, feel free to print and cut out these flash cards to use with your child.

You should know that, when I made these cards, I omitted the sight words that were also on the kindergarten sight words list.  If you have not already done so, you should print out the kindergarten flash cards to use in conjunction with these.

TO PRINT:  Make sure your printer is on and ready to print.  Click on the desired image to enlarge.  Then right click on the image and choose print.  Use your browser's back button to return to this page and repeat these steps with the remaining pages.

Break a World Record with Jumpstart by Reading with Your Kids!

No compensation was received for sharing this information with 3G2S readers.

Reading with my kids has always been one my favorite activities.  Whether it is a book for school or just for fun, it is a great way to expand and grow their imaginations. This year, on October 3rd, we invite you to join people across the country in an effort to support Jumpstart’s ongoing mission to work toward the day that every child in America enters Kindergarten prepared to succeed!

On Thursday, October 3rd, many families will sit down to read this year’s book Otis, a New York Times Bestseller, by Loren Long, to beat the world record of 2.3 Million people who read the same book on the same day.  This record was set in 2012 by Jumpstart’s Read for the Record. Since 2006, the Jumpstart campaign has raised more than $8 million dollars for early education programs. Join families across the U.S. this year to help beat last year’s record and take the "Pledge to Read".

Building a Home Library For Young Avid Readers

When I was a young child, I remember going to our local free public library about once a week with my family. My parents thought reading was important and that was their way of encouraging my sister and I to read.  Also, it didn't hurt that it didn't cost them anything but their time.

Since our lives are so busy and hectic, we actually rarely have time to go to the library, except during summer vacation.  I find it easier to just order books for my children through their school to support their classrooms and to shop for books online.  I buy the most books for our oldest son, who is currently 9.  Even at an early age, he was an avid reader.  I actually do not mind buying books for him because he loves them so much and these books will get passed down to his two younger siblings.

It seemed like overnight that our son went from reading his first book with chapters to reading books written for 7th and 8th graders.  I quickly realized that I should not bother buying him books that were under 150 pages, otherwise he would finish the book in one sitting.  Now most of the books I buy for him are 300+ pages long.  Another thing I started to realize is that longer books also cost more, even in paperback.  That's when I transitioned from buying new books to shopping for bargain books and like-new used books whenever possible.  This was a big step for me because I rarely feel comfortable with buying anything used, aside from cars and wood furniture.  I have to admit that it has worked out well for us.  My son still enjoys the books just as much as if I had not paid a fraction of the price for them.

Were do you shop for books?

Encourage Your Child to Read More with This Easy DIY Laminated Bookmark Craft

Thank you to Fellowes for providing a complimentary product sample for us to base this review upon.  All opinions expressed are my own.

I bought my first laminator years ago and it had served me well for years. Recently, it broke and I had been in the market for a new one when I was offered the Fellowes Saturn2 95 Laminator. This laminator is of much better quality than my previous one and I have loved using it for many things, such as photos, important documents, cards, and much more. One of my favorite recent projects has been helping my kids create fun bookmarks they can use while reading.

Today's Project:  DIY Laminated Bookmarks for Kids

SUPPLIES NEEDED:
laminator (We used the Fellowes Saturn2 95)
laminating pouches
white or colored
colored markers
single hole puncher
scissors
yarn

Step 1.  Turn on the Fellowes laminator to preheat, which takes about 5 minutes. (I select the 3 mil setting per instructions on the laminating pouches I was planning to use.)

Step 2.  Print a free bookmark template. I used colored paper per my children's request, just for added flair. (You don’t have to use a template, but I did just so they’d know their constraints.)

Step 3.  Have your child decorate the bookmark with magic markers.  You could also use some fun stickers.  (My kids had a blast using their imaginations and designing their bookmarks. Avery, 11 years old, went with clever phrases and minimal decorations, while Quinn, 6 years old, went for a more artistic approach.)

Step 4.  Help your child cut out their bookmark.  Then punch a hole centered at the top approximately 1/2" from the edge. (Each of my kids then cut out their own bookmark and I punched a hole at the top for the tassel.)

Step 5.  Carefully placed each bookmark into the laminating pouch, making sure there is enough room on each side to cut them out later, and then closed the pouch.

Step 6.  Place the pouches into the laminator one at a time with the closed side going into the machine first and the open side going through last. The laminator has rollers which move the pouch through on their own, so there is no need to manipulate them once they have been properly placed.

Step 7.  When the entire pouch makes it through the machine, you may then remove it to let it cool before cutting. It is important to wait until it is completely cool and to not cut too close to your pictures. If you make these mistakes, the pouches will no longer be sealed.

Step 8.  After cutting, re-punched the hole for the tassel at the top and thread colored yarn into the holes.

The finished products are really nice and work perfectly as reusable bookmarks for their many reading adventures.

The Fellowes Saturn2 95 Laminator features HeatGuard Technology so it’s safe to use in homes because it is always cool to the touch and never could burn anyone nearby. This laminator is also unique because it offers both hot and cold lamination and it has a release lever to help prevent jams.  See how easy-to-use the Fellowes Saturn2 95 really is in this brief video demo.

The Fellowes Saturn2 95 Laminator is available at Staples.com for a suggested retail of $159.99. You can also find Fellowes products at WalMart and Amazon.com.  Visit Fellowes Idea Center, Fellowes on Facebook, and on Pinterest for more fun ways to utilize your Fellowes laminator.

24 Days of Christmas Books!

Last year, my family did 12 Days of Christmas Books to countdown the last 12 days leading up to Christmas.  Well, my 3 children enjoyed it so much that I decided to do 24 days of Christmas books this year.  Yes, that means I had to double the number of children's Christmas books I had on hand, but I did not mind at all.  Christmas is my favorite Holiday and it was so much fun choosing new books to add to our collection.

On December 1st, we will be reading The Elf On The Shelf and, on the 24th, we will be reading 'Twas The Night Before Christmas.  I made sure to wrap these two books in different wrapping paper so I could tell them apart.  The other 22 books were wrapped in identical wrapping paper.  Each night one child will have a turn at choosing a book.  Some of the books are old favorites and some are new Christmas stories, which is very exciting to them.

One of the new Christmas books I added this year is Christmas Magic: A Changing Picture Book written by Kirsten Hall and illustrated by Simon Mendez.  This beautifully illustrated book shows scenes based on some of the best things about the Holiday season, such as baking goodies or going sledding.  Every page has a tab on the right-hand side that magically changes the picture when pulled.  My children will just love this book. I can just see them sitting quietly looking at the pictures changing back and forth for hours.

This hardcover book is recommended for ages 4 and up.  It retails for $14.95, but is currently selling on Amazon for $10.72 with Free Super Saver Shipping.

Another book I added to our collection is A Bit of Applause for Mrs. Claus by Susie Schick-Pierce and Jeannie Schick-Jacobowitz, authors of A Bit of Applause for Santa Claus, and Muffin Drake-Policastro. This book tells the story, unlike any our children are familiar with, of how Santa comes down with the flu and how Mrs. Claus must save the day by making sure everything is ready for the big night.  There is always so much focus on Santa, that it is nice to see a story that gives the ever-important Mrs. Claus some recognition.  The illustrations by Wendy Wallin Malinow are colorful and lively.  This book is recommended for ages 4 and up.  The large text of only one sentence per page is perfect for emerging readers.

This hardcover book retails for $15.99, but is currently selling on Amazon for $12.79 with Free Super Saver Shipping.

I am so happy to have started this tradition at our house.  If you would like to start your own tradition, it is not too late.  You can always do the 12 Days of Christmas Books and work your way up to 24 like I did!

Thank you to Sterling Publishing and to Sourcebooks Jabberwocky for providing complimentary product samples for us to base this review upon.

Classrooms Across the U.S. Ask For Tag Reading Systems via DonorsChoose.org

For years, LeapFrog has been doing its share to support literacy in preschool and early grade school classrooms with the Tag. Give. Read. program.  Since the launch of this program in 2009, LeapFrog has donated over $1.5 million worth of Tag Readers and Tag books to classrooms across the U.S., affecting the education of more than 20,000 students.  One of those classrooms was a pre-K class from one of our very own local non-profit preschools, so I have seen these Tag School Readers in action first hand.

Does LeapFrog want to stop at $1.5 million?  Not a chance!  LeapFrog and DonorsChoose.org continue to work together to get Tag School Reader Bundles into classrooms in need.  If you are not familiar with DonorsChoose, it is an organization that allows teachers to request support for particular classroom tools and equipment that the school cannot afford to provide to them.  Then donors can contribute to the classroom of their choice.  All these donations of varying amounts add up to reach the monetary goal, so even the smallest donations count.

Currently, there are over 200 classrooms requesting LeapFrog Tag Reader systems and books.  You can read about each and every one by going to DonorsChoose.org and doing a keyword search for "LeapFrog."  To make your donation go further, if you decide to support one or more of these classrooms requesting Tag Classroom Readers, LeapFrog will match your donation dollar for dollar and will continue to do so until they have matched $50,000 in donations.

As a thank you for reading about their efforts, you are invited to enter to win the following prize bundle (a $170 value) . . .

Thank you to LeapFrog for providing a prize pack for our contest prize and for giving me a DonorsChoose.org gift card for taking the time to participate in this campaign.

The 12 Days of Christmas Books

Soon after I completed an advent calendar craft for our 3 children, a reader told me that she had seen a great advent calendar idea using books somewhere online.  A couple of days later, I happened upon this Christmas Book Advent Calendar on the blog MADE.  I loved this idea about having one wrapped Christmas book to read each day as a way to get children excited about reading.  However, since I had already made an advent calendar and we do not have 24 Christmas books, I modified the idea to create a fun Christmas activity for counting down the last 12 days of Christmas instead.

We had about 9 Christmas books in our home library, so I added 3 new ones to make a total of 12.  One of the books we already owned was The Night Before Christmas, which will be reserved for reading on Christmas Eve.  I wrapped all the books in one of two different wrapping papers, with the exception of that title, which was wrapped in a different paper to set it apart.

Starting on December 13th, one of the children will either choose a wrapped book out of the stack or reach into a bag and pull out a book blindly.  I will let them choose which they would rather do.  Then this book will be their bedtime story that night.  The children will have to take turns choosing a book in rotation each night.

Some of the books in our Christmas book collection:
If my children enjoy this activity, I will definitely repeat it next year, switching out a few of the books for new ones.  After a few years, we might actually have enough books to do an advent calendar.  Thanks for the inspiration Dana!

Just Kids Gifts Personalized Children's Book

About two years ago, my husband and I gave our oldest son a personalized storybook for Christmas.  He absolutely loved that he was one of the characters in the book and, to this day, that book is still a cherished keepsake for him.  Our youngest son will be turning 5 in January.  He does not have a natural affinity towards reading books, so I wondered if having a special book made just for him would prompt him to spend a little more time reading?

Just Kids Gifts, a company owned by parents of an 18 month old toddler that sells personalized books, music CDs and DVDs, and photo DVDs for children, offers a vast selection of personalized children's books.  I looked through almost all of them and finally decided that The Train With No Name would be the perfect book for our preschool-aged son.  The reasons why I think this book is perfect for him are because he just loves trains and this book allows you to include names of up to three friends to be mentioned in the story.  I was able to include his big brother and twin sister.  This made the book more fun for everybody and our other two children did not feel left out.

(Click any photo to enlarge)

On the first page, there is a place for a special message to your child.  I took this opportunity to encourage our son to keep learning and reading.

We had our oldest son read The Train With No Name to the twins for a bedtime story.  I think big brother enjoyed reading the story just as much as his little brother and sister enjoyed listening to it.  In fact, when he was done reading it the first time, he said, "I wanna read it again!  Let's read it again!!"

I could not be more pleased with the reaction I received from the children in regards to this book.  Also, I have casually observed our youngest son grabbing a handful of books to sit and look through the past few days.  These personalized books would make a great gift for the holidays, a birthday, or another special occasion for any child, whether he or she is already excited about reading or needs a fun new book to help build that excitement.

To learn more about Just Kids Gifts personalized gifts, visit JustKidsGifts.com and Just Kids Gifts on Facebook and Twitter.  The 32-page hardcover book we received retails for $16.95 plus the cost of shipping and handling.

Thank you to Just Kids Gifts for providing a complimentary product sample for us to base this review upon and for providing an additional product for our contest prize.  This article was written as part of a campaign for the Family Review Network.

Giveaway: LeapFrog Tag Prize Pack for You & Your Favorite Kindergarten Classroom [CLOSED]

To support children's literacy in the U.S., LeapFrog has launched an exciting new program called Tag. Give. Read. This is part of the initiative to introduce Tag Classroom Bundles into kindergarten classes. I am so impressed by this program because my 1st grader could already read going into kindergarten in part due to owning a Tag Reader. I think all children should have this advantage, as well as have access to as many books as possible. The Tag. Give. Read. program helps U.S. schools get closer to this goal.

LeapFrog has given me the wonderful opportunity of selecting one classroom to receive a kindergarten Tag Classroom Kit! Since the pre-K class in our twins' preschool teaches the kindergarten curriculum, I was able to choose this classroom to receive this incredible gift. Hopefully, these Tag School Readers will give these preschoolers a head start with reading before they get to kindergarten. Theirs is a non-profit school and I am so happy to be able to thank the two teachers of the Butterfly Class for giving our 1st grader such a great experience when he was in pre-K. I look forward to our twins being Butterflies next year.

Two easy ways to get involved . . .

1) Donate to a teacher who has requested funds for LeapFrog Tag Readers for his or her classroom through DonorsChoose.org . You can make any size donation and LeapFrog will match it. So if you can afford to donate $25, you are really getting that classroom a $50 donation after the funds have been matched. (Last year, Santa gave my oldest a Donors Choose Giving Card in his stocking, so he could choose a classroom to help. This would be a great way to help these teachers as well as teach your children the true meaning of giving.)

2) Participate in LeapFrog's Virtual Book Drive by "Liking" LeapFrog on Facebook. For each and every new Facebook Fan they gain, LeapFrog will donate a Tag book to a kindergarten teacher up to 50,000 books total! This does not cost you anything except 2 seconds of your time. Make sure to invite all your Facebook friends to "Like" LeapFrog as well, so they can each prompt a book donation too!

Thank you to LeapFrog for donating a Tag Classroom Kit to the classroom of my choice as a thank you for participating in this campaign, for providing a prize for this contest, and for donating another classroom kit to a classroom of the winner's choice.

What you can win:
One lucky reader will receive the following . . .

1) A Tag Prize Pack (ARV $88) containing:
  • a Tag Reading System
  • a Tag U.S. Map
  • 2 additional Tag Reader books

2) The power to choose one U.S. kindergarten classroom to receive the following:

  • 2 Tag School Readers with Headphones - ARV $140
  • 2 sets of 15 Tag Reader books (30 books total) - ARV $210
