4 Fun New Learning and Developmental Games from Super Duper Publications

Thank you to Super Duper Publication for providing complimentary product samples for us to base this review upon and for providing an additional product for our contest prize.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Super Duper Publications specializes in fun learning materials for kids and so far we’ve not been disappointed with their products. The game, Lids n’ Lizards, helps children practice sorting and categorizing, describing, plus builds memory skills in an entertaining way. To play, parents place small magnets from various categories inside the lids and occasionally hide a lizard under as well. Kids take turns flipping the lids over, sorting the magnets into their proper category (food, animals, transportation, around the home, or clothing), and keeping the lizard if you find one. The one who collects the most lizards in the end wins the game. My 6 year old, Quinn, loves this game! He loves setting it up and deciding which magnets to put in play and hiding the lizards underneath. Then he loves mixing them up and playing either by himself (he says at least he’s sure to win that way!) or with others. He has played this at least a dozen times since it came and it’s quickly become a favorite of his. I love that it’s a teaching game and that the lids, lizards, and magnets are all sturdy so his new fave isn’t likely to wear out soon.

The MagneTalk Early Classifying Magnetic Board Game is a game that capitalizes on the appeal magnets have for children to make something that improves sorting skills, builds vocabulary, critical thinking skills, and even fine motor skills. MagneTalk Early Classifying has the same five categories that Lids n’ Lizards does and square magnets that children can sort into their proper place. For younger kids, this could sometimes be challenging but very beneficial to them nonetheless. For my 6 year old, this is a little simple but he loves doing it still and even making stories using the items as he sorts them which also helps him improve his imagination. He loves to do this while I read chapter books to him and he makes a game of finding a magnet to go along with the book. Like all the Super Duper, Inc. products we’ve tried, this features very sturdy materials that aren’t likely to show wear with proper care.  Plus, the board and magnets store away neatly in a handled tote so it’s compact to store and easy to travel with.

Both of these great products can be purchased on www.superduperinc.com. Lids n’ Lizards retails for $39.95 and MagneTalk Early Classifying retails for $21.95.  These are just two of the four new games from Super Duper Publications.  You can read my review of the Topic Talk and the All About You, All About Me card games here.

100-Piece Magneatos Better Builders Set by Guidecraft

Guidecraft is a leader in children's toys and for good reason: they feature quality products that engage children's brains and stand up to the test of time. We own several developmental toys from Guidecraft, and, after many months of playing, none of them have shown any signs of wear. Because of this, saying yes to another review from Guidecraft was a no-brainer.

This time, Guidecraft sent us their newest building set, a new version of their classic Magneatos, in a 100-piece set. This Magneatos Better Builder Series has super strong magnets, unique rod and ball builders, and nearly endless possibilities for creation. It also includes a convenient storage bin and 22-page activity guide to get your little architect's creative juices flowing. The magnets are all safely and securely built so there's no risk of choking or other hazards for children over 18 months old. An Oppenheim Platinum Best Toy Award Winner, you can rest assured knowing that this toy is both fun and educational.

As soon as we opened the box, we were in love with Magneatos. We've never owned anything like these before, so that just added to the fun. The inner magnets are very strong and easily "stick" together so the designs we make stay in place until we're done but they come apart easily when we're ready to tear them down. We had a blast building houses, towers, hotels, bridges, spiders and other creatures, and even using them to spell out our names. Both my kids, ages 5-1/2 and 11, loved this set, and even my husband and I enjoyed building with them.

Magneatos help to build both fine and gross motor skills because they are relatively small but they require gross motor muscle use when taking them apart. I loved coming up with building challenges for my boys and seeing their faces as they tried to figure how to construct what I'd imagined for them. We've literally had hours of fun with these since we got them a few weeks ago and I'm sure we'll have many, many more hours of use in the years to come.

As with all Guidecraft products, these will surely be around for a long time because of how sturdy they are. In fact, I'd say my kids will outgrow them long before they need to be retired. You can purchase Guidecraft's product on their website, www.guidecraft.com. This 100-piece set of Magneatos Better Builders retails for $159.95.  You also have the choice of the smaller 30-piece and 60 piece sets.

Thank you to Guidecraft for providing a complimentary product sample for us to base this review upon and for providing a second product for our contest prize.

Giveaway & Review: Magneatos Magnetic Construction Set by Guidecraft [CLOSED]

Our children are all about building blocks and erector sets. This makes my husband and I so happy because most construction sets are battery-free toys. Magneatos, the award-winning magnetic construction set suitable for ages 2 and up, is unlike any building toy my children have ever owned.

This colorful toy is perfect for toddlers and preschoolers, but has managed to engage our kindergartner as well. The pieces were much larger and chunkier than I had expected, making this toy perfect for little hands and also very durable. For toddlers, this toy is an excellent tool for teaching basic colors and for matching and sorting by colors and size. For preschoolers, this toy is great for learning counting and about the general principles of magnets.

These basic shapes also force children to use their imaginations when building unlike sets that have specialized parts. This particular 72pc Magneatos Set comes with two different lengths of cylindrical rods that have polar magnets on the ends along with jumbo balls. My 6yr old suggested that Guidecraft should add curved and bendable pieces to these sets, but he does not know that such pieces are available in the Magneatos Curves sets and the Magneatos Jumbo Master Builder Series.

This set is a bit challenging to master, especially if your goal is to build something complex. I have seen both my 3yr old daughter and my 6yr old son get frustrated because what they are building did not hold its shape. This toy really teaches patience because there is a balance that needs to be maintained in order for any upward building to be successful.

Below are some examples of structures built by my 6yr old son . . .

A Star and A House

A Scooter

Out of all the things my children have built with Magneatos, their favorite things are microphones and flutes. They never get tired of building those two things and then putting on a show.

You can purchase eight different Magneatos building sets right on Guidecraft.com . To learn more about Guidecraft toys and children's furniture, visit Guidecraft on Facebook and Guidecraft on Twitter.

Thank you to Guidecraft for providing a sample building set free of charge for us to base this review upon and for providing another set for our contest prize.

Review: Battle Strikers Tournament Game

My husband has been waiting so long for our kindergartner to reach the age of being able to play with "big boy" toys. Even though our nearly 6yr old son is not yet into console or PC gaming, this game of turbo tops called Battle Strikers by MEGA Brands offers just as much excitement for a child his age.

The object of the Battle Strikers Tournament game is for each player to drop their spinning top into the area with their motorized turbo launcher. Then each player uses their magnetic controller, which slides onto two fingers, to push their Striker top into their opponent's to make their opponent's top stop spinning.

Please take a few minutes to watch our Battle Strikers in action . . .

What my family and I thought about the Battle Strikers Tournament Set:

1) This game requires a steady hand and a lot of control. You need to get your controller close enough to your Striker to affect it with the magnet, but not too close that you accidentally cause your own top to stop spinning. Someone with shaky hands like me would most likely knock their own top out of the game.

2) Even though this game can be enjoyed by anyone ages 6 to adult, my husband and I agree that the level of enjoyment may vary depending on the player's age. For someone my son's age, he just enjoys playing with only a little competitiveness. He would just play until his hands and arms got tired. A tween or teen would most likely enjoy this game the most because they may employ strategies about which Striker to use against a specific opponent, since the attributes of each Striker vary, and perhaps even thinking about the physics behind each move. An adult would enjoy all of the above, but their interest may not last quite as long and they may not be as anxious to collect all 12 of the Strikers.

3) Although this game can be played on any smooth surface and not just inside the arena, I do recommend playing on a surface that has a lip around it, like a train table. The Strikers sometimes spin at such a high velocity that when they do shoot off to one side, they can mildly injure someone. I was hit in the hand quite a few times while gathering footage for the video and I ended up with a small dent on one knuckle after being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

4) I think that it is fun that there are two different ways to use the launchers. The players can either hit the top of the launcher to release the spinning top or they can bump it into the other launder. Even though my husband never has any problems launching his Strikers by hitting the top of the launcher, my son usually needs to hit his at least three times before he can get it to release his spinning top.

5) Although the arena serves its purpose, I was surprised that it was so lightweight. It is made out of glossy molded plastic, only slightly heavier than a childs Halloween mask would be. I also would have loved to see an arena that doubles as a storage case for the launchers, controllers, and Strikers.

For more information about Battle Strikers, visit BattleStrikers.com, the home of the Battle Strikers online community. Currently, you can look for this Battle Strikers Tournament set, which comes with two exclusive Strikers, at most major toy retailers, such as the MEGA Brands Shop, Toys R Us, Amazon.com, and many more.
