Creating With Colors Review & Giveaway: Simple Illustrated Storybook [CLOSED]

Gummy Lump is a leading online retailer of creative, developmental, and educational toys made by respected brands, such as Melissa & Doug, Alex Toys, Guidecraft, Learning Resources, and more.  When I had the chance to select a few arts and crafts products to use in my Creating With Colors series, it was easy to put together a project that would be simple, educational, and engaging for my children.

Today's Project:  Simple Illustrated Storybook

Ask your child to think of a simple fictional or factual story, which can be told with a series of one picture and one sentence (or two short sentences) pages.

Supplies Needed:

1)  Alex Toys Draw Like a Pro
2)  Melissa & Doug Storytelling Paper
3)  Stapler

(Click any image to enlarge)

Step 1.  Map out your child's story and decide how many pages his or her book will be.  Then fold 1 sheet of Storytelling Paper (lined side facing out) for every 2 pages you need for the book.  Then fold 1 sheet of Storytelling Paper (blank side facing out) in half for the cover.

Step 2.  Insert the wheel or the slide your child would like to use into the projector.  Adjust the focus and ask your child to trace the image with the black marker included with the Draw Like A Pro, while holding the paper firmly with one hand.  (Make sure the first page has the folded edge on the right.)

Tip #1:  If your child is unsure of his or her ability to trace, you can always use a pencil.  That way, mistakes will not be permanent.

Tip #2:  If your child has trouble holding the paper still, use a tiny bit of masking tape to hold the opposite corners down.

Step 3.  When all the desired images have been traced onto the appropriate pages and the front cover, ask your child to fill in the background and to color in each page.

Step 4.  Then ask your child to write out the text that should correspond to the illustration on each page.

Tip #3:  Although my son did not take this suggestion, I think it would be smart to write all the text out with pencil first and then go back over it with marker.  That way there will be no surprises if a sentence is too long to fit on the page or if there are spelling errors.

Step 5.  Now place all the pages in order and then place them inside the cover.  Use a stapler to put a minimum of 3 staples along the edge.  (Be sure to put the staples in far enough to secure all the pages, but not so far in as to prevent the pages from opening properly.)

Here is the result of our project . . .

My son was very pleased with how his book turned out.  I think we should have done this project in more than one sitting because I could see how his tracing started off impeccable and then gradually got sloppier.  It was pretty neat how the Draw Like A Pro allowed my son to put the same head on different bodies.  This makes it easy for a child to show the same character in different poses throughout the book.

Since I did this project with our 7 year old son, I also requested the Create-a-Face Pad and the Create-a-Person Pad, both from Melissa & Doug.  I thought these two products offered by Gummy Lump would be fun for our 4 year old twins and I was right.  Both pads help our preschoolers to really think about where one facial feature is in relation to another.  They also teach them to think about details, like adding shoelaces or buttons to the people.

Play To Learn Diner Giveaway: Learn Fractions by Cutting Bread [CLOSED]

Since I was so pleasantly surprised at how receptive my 6yr old son was to my introduction to very basic fractions, I decided it was time to teach him about how to discern between 1, 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4.

To aid me in this task, Gummy Lump, one of the leading online resources of play foods, sent us a Melissa & Doug Cutting Bread Play Food Set. This toy was perfect for this lesson because it has an English muffin, a bagel, sandwich slices, and a loaf of bread that can all be split into halves, a baguette that can be cut into thirds, and a bread loaf that can be divided into fourths.

Using this play food set, I demonstrated to my son how we go about changing "one whole" into fractions. Here are some examples of the statements and questions I posed:
  • If we cut this bagel into two pieces, what did we make? Halves How many halves do we have? 2
  • If we have two halves, what do I have if I take one piece? 1/2
  • What else do we have here that can be cut into halves?
  • If we cut this baguette into three pieces, what did we make? Thirds
  • If we have three equal pieces and I take one piece, what do I have? 1/3 If I take two pieces, what do I have? 2/3
  • If we cut this loaf of bread into four pieces, what did we make? fourths
  • If we have four equal pieces and I take one piece, what do I have? 1/4 If I take two pieces, then what do I have? 2/4 or 1/2

Once I felt my son was fairly comfortable with the concept of one whole, 1/2, 1/3, and 1/4, I gave him this free printable worksheet that I made, which asks him to color each shape based on what the shaded area represents. I did the first row with him to make sure he understood how it worked. He actually colored most of the shapes correctly. The ones he missed were partially due to his rushing and not double-checking which color corresponded to which fraction.

(To print, click on the image to enlarge. Then right-click and select print.)

By the end of this lesson, I was pretty confident that we laid down a good foundation for understanding fractions. I asked my son if he thought fractions were hard and he said that he thought they were a little bit hard, which made me happy.

Once the lesson was done, it was time to play. My son could not wait to cut into the bread and butter again and again. I was served an assortment of yummy food, such as French bread with imaginary chicken soup.

You can find this play food set along with a large assortment of play foods by Melissa & Doug, KidKraft, Haba, Voila, Guidecraft, and more on GummyLump.com . For a limited time, Gummy Lump is offering a Buy 3 Get 1 Free promotion on Melissa & Doug play food sets.

Shop 'n' Share: Great Deal on Melissa & Doug "Stamp & Sort Mailbox"

I may have mentioned before that I love to shop the clearance section on AllAboardToys.com . Well, I could not resist browsing their after-Christmas selection and was thrilled to find some Mickey Mouse Clubhouse party supplies on clearance. That just happens to be the theme for the twins' birthday dinner this week.

I also stumbled across something that I had been eyeing for close to a year . . . the Melissa & Doug - Stamp & Sort Mailbox. I thought it would be a great way for our kindergartner to practice reading and writing, while incorporating it into pretend play. I'm so glad I put off the purchase because I found it on clearance for $17.99 on All Aboard Toys. On top of that, I was able to take advantage of a free shipping offer. To compare, Amazon.com, which usually has very competitive prices, is now selling it marked down for $25.40 .
I have to say that the kids love this mailbox! I think I'm going to think up a craft project to make additional pieces of mail. If I come up with anything, I'll certainly write it up for my Creating With Colors series.
