Giveaway & Review: Sid the Science Kid Party [CLOSED]

“Hey, Sid, what do you say? Whatcha want to learn today? I want to know why things happen and how and I want to know everything now. How does this thing work? Why did that thing change? How did that do what it just did? What’s up with the sky? Do you think I could fly? The world is spinning and I want to know why. I‘ve got a lot of questions and big ideas. I’m Sid the Science Kid.”

If you have young children, chances are that you’ve watched Sid the Science Kid. It’s an adorable show on PBS about a young boy, Sid, who loves science. Children are captivated by his cute personality, inquisitive nature, and the bright colors that make him up. I know that all the children in my daycare and my own two kids really, really love Sid. They look forward to it every day.

To celebrate the new season of Sid the Science Kid, we held a “screening party”. First we watched the season premiere of Sid the Science Kid, which the kids just loved and felt so special being one of the first to preview it. Next we introduced our new toy, the Sid the Science Kid Gotta Know Microphone that sings, magnifies your voice, gives applause, and more. The kids absolutely love this toy! It’s a bit noisy, but you know how kids love noise. Next we ate dinner and specially made Sid cupcakes. If you would like to take it a step further, you could make microphone cupcakes.

Then we watched the second episode of the show. After that, we did a coloring page, then our experiment about why wheels are round with the Sid the Science Kid: Why Are Wheels Round learning science kit, which was fun and the kids learned a lot by trying out the square and oval wheels before the round ones. We finished up the evening by watching the third episode of the new season. It was a great party and all the supplies just made the party that much more special. It was a great evening with a great theme.

Catch the new season of Sid the Science Kid starting this Monday, October 4 on PBS.

Thank you to The Rogers Group for sending us complimentary Sid the Science Kid party supplies, a screener DVD, and toys for our event and also for providing the prize for our contest.

Review: Playskool's Sid the Science Kid Gotta Know Microphone

Do you know a little one who likes to ask a lot of questions? If so, then this might be the perfect toy for that inquisitive child. I am referring to the Sid the Science Kid Gotta Know Microphone from Hasbro Playskool. All three of my children, who are ages 3, 3, and 6, very much enjoy role playing during dramatic play. This affordable toy has provided them with many hours of fun.

If you are not familiar with the character Sid, he is the charismatic little boy from the animated PBS series Sid the Science Kid. Sid and his friends love to learn and Sid is a future reporter in the making. He loves to ask questions, which allows both Sid and your child to learn fun scientific facts.

Although this toy is recommended for ages 3+, it is extremely user-friendly. A younger child would enjoy it, but it is hard plastic, so an infant or toddler might hit with it.

This toy comes with the required 3 AAA batteries, which is great, because there is no waiting for the fun to begin. The back has a 3-position switch for on, off, and demo mode.

There are four large colorful buttons, each with a different function. The purple one lets you hear your audience laughing and the yellow button allows you to hear your audience applauding. The red button plays fun music and lyrics from Sid the Science Kid. The white button, which is my children's favorite, allows you to hear your voice echo when you speak into the microphone. It took awhile for our 3 year old twins to grasp that they had to hold the button down while speaking, but they figured it out eventually.

Although our twins love this toy, they do not quite understand how to conduct an interview. Luckily their 6 year old brother makes a great reporter and hopefully they will learn from his example.

As a parent, you may be cringing at the thought of bringing a microphone into the house, but I was pleasantly surprised that this toy was not too loud at all. My children's voices were not really amplified, but were just heard with an echo.

You can find the Playskool Sid the Science Kid Gotta Know Microphone at most places where Hasbro Playskool toys are sold. It retails for $14.99. I think that is an excellent price for a toy that will likely appeal to your child for many years.

Thank you to The Jim Henson Company for providing a sample toy free of charge for us to base this review upon.

Giveaway & Review: "The Bug Club" & "Change Happens" Sid the Science Kid DVDs [CLOSED]

In our house, all the kids and adults alike are big fans of Sid the Science Kid. I think his personality is very dynamic and he sets a wonderful example because he loves to learn. Everything, from the characters to the music are lively, colorful, and upbeat. I love how this show encourages children to make observations about everything around them.

I think the appeal to my 5yr old son is that some of the the topics presented on Sid the Science Kid are especially cool to him. Some of the topics included in these two DVDs were decomposing food and things you find in dirt. My son also enjoys the fun riddles at the end of each episode. He likes to add them to his arsenal of jokes to share with us.

These two Sid the Science Kid DVDs each house four episodes.

Hello Doggie

The Dirt on Dirt
Don't Forget the Leaves

Review: Sid the Science Kid . . . The Dirt on Dirt

Have you ever met Sid? If you haven't, this is Sid the Science Kid . . . the star of one of PBS Kid's most popular children's shows on television. Sid is a smart little boy and has a very dynamic personality. He loves to learn and makes your children want to learn too.

On the morning of Earth Day (April 22nd, 2009) PBS Kids will be airing a series of shows on the topic of taking care of our earth. This line up includes a special episode of Sid the Science Kid titled "The Dirt on Dirt." My 5yr old son was lucky enough to receive a preview copy of this episode and I was able to watch his reaction to Sid and Sid's friends Gerald, Gabriela, and May.

What impressed me about Sid the Science Kid and the Earth Day episode:

1) I like the hip hop music included in each episode. It's fun and upbeat.

2) The show is written in a way that is easy to understand for preschoolers and kindergartners.

3) This show encourages exploration.

4) Each of the characters is unique.

5) The show portrays school and learning as something that is fun and exciting.

6) This particular episode poses and answers questions, such as "What is in dirt?" and "What do you think the Earth wishes for on its birthday?"

What my 5yr old son thought about this Sid the Science Kid episode:

1) He had a big smile on his face during most of the episode and I heard him laugh out loud several times.

2) My son said his favorite part was when Sid and his mother were exploring dirt on the Internet together. (I guess he really is my son, isn't he?)

3) He also thought it was pretty cool when Sid found a wiggly warm in the dirt.

Although my son has watched Sid the Science Kid in the past, I've never sat down and watch an entire episode with him. I highly recommend this show as something adults and children can enjoy together.
