A Day Out With Thomas "Mystery On The Rails Tour 2012" at Edaville USA

After nearly a month of anticipation, the day our family was to spend A Day Out with Thomas, an event sponsored by MEGA Brands, finally arrived.  We were a little worried since it was pouring rain that morning, but, as luck would have it, the rain cleared up right when we pulled into the Edaville USA parking lot after quite a long drive.  Mother Nature must have known how much our children (plus hundreds of others here in Massachusetts) were looking forward to this event.

Although the A Day Out With Thomas:  Mystery on the Rails Tour 2012 was our first Day Out With Thomas event, it was not our first trip to Edaville in Carver, Massachusetts.  We had attended the Christmas Festival of Lights during Holiday 2011.  The children had so much fun that they asked if we could return again the following year.  We were thrilled to be able to bring them back to Edaville USA, especially during a different time of the year.  Edaville is quite different in the summertime during the day than in the wintertime during the evening.

We arrived early enough to catch the first train of the day, which departed at 9:30am.  We were able to sit in the train car that was closest to Thomas.  The children enjoyed the train ride very much, but as an adult, I found it difficult to top the evening train ride through the Festival of Lights.  You can view more photos from our Thomas and Friends train ride on the 3G2S Facebook page.

Before we tackled the four stops on the maps the children received, the children were eager to go on some of the rides.

Our children's favorite rides at Edaville were the Astronaut Ride, the Red Baron Ride, the Carousel, and our 8 year old especially loved the Bumper Cars.

Next, we had to have a Slushie break before we hit the four stops on our children's maps.  At each stop, the children could get their maps stamped and then turn them in at any gift shop to receive a prize.  Of the four stops, I think the Imagination Station was our children's favorite.  It is actually located on the second floor of a building that was not air conditioned, so we practically had the whole place to ourselves.  There was a huge ball pit that was loads of fun and a carousel-ride that was propelled by the riders peddling.

Because there was so much to do, our children did not mind skipping a few things.  For example, it was not important to them to have their photos taken with Thomas and, when we went to see Sir Topham Hatt and found he was about to take a break, we opted to go do something else rather than wait.  There was plenty to do and, after 2-1/2 hours, we had three tuckered out children to prove it.

If you asked our children what their absolute favorite parts of the morning were, our daughter would say winning an inflatable duck and the train ride, her twin brother would say the yummy Slushies, and their big brother would say the Bumper Cars ride.  Overall, the event was fun and entertaining for all three of our children.  The enjoyment the adults experienced came from seeing the smiles on our children's faces.

You can find out about future stops all around the country for the  A Day Out With Thomas:  Mystery on the Rails Tour 2012 and the tour dates here.   Every child who is a Thomas and Friends fan or even just of trains in general should attend this event at least once.

Thank you to A Day Out With Thomas and Edaville USA for providing press tickets to this event in order to facilitate this review.

Review: Mighty Machines "Revved Up!" (DVD)

If you have never heard of the Mighty Machines series, it is a show about all things to do with transportation that originated in Canada. My oldest son, who is 6 years old, especially loves his Mighty Machines DVDs.

This DVD Mighty Machines: Revved Up! features three 30-minute episodes . . .

- "Building An Airplane"
- "Ride the Mountain Rails!"
- "Reach For the Sky!"

These episodes are like mini documentaries, but are narrated and presented in a way that is interesting to children. For example, the first episode "Building An Airplane" is narrated by the planes themselves who are in the process of being built.

By the time your child is done watching this DVD, he or she will be able to answer questions, such as . . .
  • What are the windows in airplanes made of?
  • What is a rivet?
  • How many engines does it take to pull a train over a mountain pass?
There is a lot of information packed into this 90-minute DVD. You can find this and other Mighty Machines DVDs on NCircle Entertainment and other select retailers of children's DVDs.

Thank you to NCircle Entertainment for sending us a sample DVD free of charge to base this review upon.

Review: Mickey's Choo-Choo Express (DVD)

It's no secret that we are fans of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse in our household. Plus with our toddler son asking Santa for the Mickey Mouse's Magic Choo Choo Train Set for Christmas, this DVD was just what we needed to get everyone excited about Christmas.

Mickey's Choo-Choo Express was released on DVD on December 1st. This DVD features a full-length 45min feature plus a Mickey Mouse Clubhouse interactive bonus episode titled "Mickey's Big Job". This bonus episode allows you the option of playing it in Fastplay mode or two different Adventure modes, in which your child can answer questions with the television remote. In addition to the familiar Mickey Mouse Clubhouse theme song and the Hot Dog song, this DVD features a song from the ever-popular band They Might Be Giants.

What I thought about this Mickey Mouse Clubhouse DVD as a parent:

1) I was happy to see that the featured presentation Mickey's Choo-Choo Express covered many educational concepts, including geometric shapes, deductive reasoning, primary colors, sequential patterns, and telling time.

2) It was nice to see our toddlers yelling out the answers to the questions posed by the characters in the movie. They were not afraid to guess at the right answer even if there was a chance they were wrong.

3) The children all seemed very excited that there was a second set of mouseketools called upon rather than just one like in the regular Mickey Mouse Clubhouse episodes.

4) The bonus episode "Mickey's Big Job" was extremely entertaining. It demonstrated to my children how to sort by size and also what a little teamwork and ingenuity can accomplish.

You can find Mickey's Choo-Choo Express at the Disney Store and at most other retailers of Disney DVDs.

Review: PBS Kids "Dinosaur Train"

On September 7th, 2009, the new PBS Kids series Dinosaur Train (brought to us by the Jim Henson Company) will debut. Aimed towards children ages 3 to 6 years, this educational children's show, teaches our children all about various species of dinosaurs among other things.

Each 30 minute Dinosaur Train segment contains 2 episodes including time with real life paleontologists. Just as medical dramas have doctors on staff to help keep the writing realistic, this animated series about dinosaurs receives the same assistance from many sources, such as paleontologists and educators, who help ensure the quality of the content.

What my 5yr old son and I thought about this new animated children's show:

1) I like the general feeling of the theme music. It is reminiscent of an old western adventure.

2) In addition to the apparent educational value of learning about dinosaurs and practicing critical thinking, I like how Dinosaur Train presents the theme of adoption. For example, even though Buddy (the adopted T-Rex) did not have wings like his siblings, which allowed them to dive for fish, he was still able to contribute to the fishing by looking out for fish. They were so obviously a family in which each member had his or her place.

3) I heard my son laugh out loud many times while watching Dinosaur Train. He also enjoyed the songs and the rhymes.

4) My son could not choose one favorite character, but instead said that he liked all four siblings the best. His favorite scene to watch was the fishing lesson.

Please take a minute to watch this short Dinosaur Train trailer . . .

My son is very much looking forward to the Dinosaur Train series starting this fall. I think the appeal is that you never know what is to come when the family of dinosaurs hops on that train to start their next family adventure.

To learn more about the Dinosaur Train animated series, visit the Dinosaur Train website on PBS Kids, where you will find fun games, free printables, and many video clips. Check your local listings to see what time Dinosaur Train will be airing on your local PBS station on Monday, September 7th.

Thank you to PBS Kids for sending us a screener DVD to preview this television show.
