5 Things to Take When You’re Travelling with Your Family

Everyone remembers the scene from the 1990 film, Home Alone, where the McCallisters are all packed and already on their overseas flight to Paris when suddenly the mother, Kate, realizes they had forgotten their youngest son at home. "Kevin!" she screams, and the audience erupts in laughter at the hilariously absurd prospect of being in such a rush to leave the house that you could forget your own child. But is it really so absurd?

Sure, you probably won't forget and accidentally leave your child at home, but there is every possibility of forgetting to bring something almost as important when traveling abroad with your family. Going overseas is stressful and there is a lot to remember. You should create a list well in advance of your departure date, and be sure to double-check it before leaving. Here's a list of 5 important items to remember to bring when traveling abroad with your family:

1. Passports and/or Visas
Your passport is your identification. You'll need it to get through airport security, to check into your hotel, and possibly for various other reasons. If the country you will be visiting requires a visa, you will need to get that well before you depart and then be sure to have it with you at all times. Everyone in your party should have their own passport and/or visa. It's also a good idea to make copies of each person's passport to leave at home with a friend just in case yours gets lost or stolen.

2. Hotel Accommodations
It's better to make all your hotel or hostel arrangements prior to your departure in order to ensure that you'll have a place to stay when you arrive at your destination. Print out confirmation emails to bring with you upon check-in so there is no question as to whether you booked ahead. When you arrive, present the clerk with your confirmation email, the passport for each person staying in the hotel, and the credit card with which you made your booking to ensure the least amount of hassle possible upon check-in.

3. First Aid Kit / Medications
It's important to bring any and all medications you might need with you, because it may be difficult to find some types of medicines in some countries; bring things like: prescription medications, allergy medicines, antidiarrheal medicines, headache medicines, etc. Some countries require you to get vaccinations before arriving in their country, so make sure everything is up-to-date according to where you're going before you depart. A small first aid kit is also a good idea to pack just in case of emergency.

4. Travel Games / Books
When you're traveling with kids, no matter their age, it is always a good idea to have something to keep them occupied both while in transit, and in the hotel room. You can never predict the weather where you're going with 100% certainty, or what might happen when you get there, so it's best to be prepared for every eventuality. A deck of cards or a small handheld battery-operated video game doesn't take up a lot of space in a suitcase, nor does a small novel.

5. Insurance / Extra Cash
Travel insurance is completely optional, but can come in handy in the case of lost or stolen luggage, cancelled flights, etc. If you purchase travel insurance, be sure to pack it in your carry-on with all your other important items. Bring extra cash in your destination country's currency for emergency costs that might spring up. Be sure to carry all cash, credit cards, etc. in a money belt.

Short-Term Family-Friendly Accommodations in NYC

It has been almost a whole year since our now 7 year old son accompanied my husband and I to New York City last year for BlogHer 2010.  Although so much time has passed, I still hear our son talking about New York this and New York that, even during his pretend play with his younger brother and sister.  That is why I am thinking that our first vacation that includes our whole family of five should be to New York City.  Someday we will be able to afford Disney, but right now, New York sounds like the best idea.

The hotel we stayed in last August was very nice, but it was not too comfortable for our son to spend any extensive amount of down time.  I could not imagine staying in a traditional hotel room with three children.  What we would need to find is a loft or apartment that someone is willing to make available for nightly, weekly, and monthly rentals.  It would be unlikely that we would stay a whole week, so we would be looking for accommodations for 3 to 4 nights.  I was surprised to see how many lofts and apartments were listed on Roomorama for New York City.  I actually found a beautiful apartment located only a few blocks from Central Park that is child-friendly, will accommodate up to 6 guests, and has a minimum of only 4 nights at $200 per night.

Roomorama.com lists such accommodations for 283 worldwide destinations.  So if you happen to be thinking Paris instead of New York like us, then you will be able to see what short-term rentals are available in Paris.  Each listing is very detailed, but vary a bit from one to the next.  For example, the apartment I was considering requires a $300 cash deposit and requires you to accept a cleaning service, which costs $99.  Some rentals charge extra per guest after a certain number.  You will be able to know right away if a particular listing will suit your particular needs, especially if you are a smoker, have children, or plan to bring your pet during your stay.  Doing your homework online will help to make your vacation planning much easier.

Residence Inn by Marriott . . . Redefining the Words "Hotel Room"

From my past experience, a standard hotel room has one queen size or two full size beds, a television armoire, and a small table with two chairs. The Residence Inn by Marriott has reinvented the hotel room.

A room at the Residence Inn, whether your extended stay is for business or a family vacation, resembles an apartment rather than a hotel room. Each room comes with a living room, which includes a sleep sofa, and a full kitchen, complete with a microwave, stove or cook top, a dishwasher, refrigerator, and eating area.

In addition to spacious apartment-like hotel rooms, the Residence Inn also offers daily hot breakfasts, free in-room Internet access, a pool, and a place for children to play outdoors. Another great feature is privacy . . . something you cannot have while staying with friends or relatives.

Residence Inn by Marriott has over 600 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada. Rates vary by location, but I have found some to be surprisingly low. Select locations also welcome pets. Use the hotel finder to search for locations closest to your destination and to see a description and photos of specific Residence Inn locations.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Residence Inn by Marriott and received a chance to win a weekend stay at a Residence Inn to facilitate my candid review. Mom Central also sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Budgeting For a Family Vacation

Summer has just begun. If your family is like mine, then you are terribly stressed out about any extra spending due to the poor economy. You may be considering or may have already decided to cancel your vacation plans this year. If things are too close for comfort, then it may be time to consider debt consolidation.

I'm not just suggesting consolidating your debt for the sake of vacation budgeting, but mainly to regain control of your and your family's life. I know only too well what it's like to be living paycheck to paycheck and worrying about what the next emergency will be that will throw the whole stringent budget off. If you can reduce your interest rates and lower your payments each month, maybe you will be able to take a well-deserved vacation with your family after all.
