Make Learning at Home Fun & Entertaining with The Magic School Bus and The Young Scientists Club!

Thank you to The Young Scientists Club for providing a complimentary product sample for us to base this review upon.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Many children and adults alike have fallen in love with Mrs. Frizzle and her class on The Magic School Bus and now you can take the magic home with you! The Young Scientists Club has new kits out and we were given the opportunity to try out The Magic School Bus Weather Lab in our homeschool.

Undoubtedly, the very first thing kids will notice the iconic shape of the kit...the same as The Magic School Bus itself! Once you open the school bus, there are over 20 experiments with color illustrated activity cards to show you how to do the experiment and give you the science behind it. Each experiment is fairly easy and the kit comes with almost everything needed to complete them. The only things you need to add are things most people already have or are easy to acquire, such as water, plastic bottles, markers, etc. The kit also comes with a data notebook for recording observations and conclusions, so kids can track their progress and remember the science skills they learned.

One of the first things you make with the kit is your own weather lab for recording and observing daily whether. With a barometer, compass, thermometer, weather vane, and more, you can record all aspects of weather and then keep track of weather patterns using the chart and stickers.

Other experiments included in this kit are condensation, evaporation, the ever-popular tornado in a bottle, and more. We have loved using this kit with our home science curriculum and highly recommend it to everyone we know - homeschoolers or not. The included items are well made, the experiments are fun yet simple, and the learning and memories made are invaluable.

You can learn more about The Young Scientists Club at www.theyoungscientistsclub.com including where to purchase this kit, which retails for $39.99. You can also follow them on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest.

Feeling Particularly Unprepared the Past Few Months

We live in New England, where we see very few storms that can cause  substantial damage.  Of course there are exceptions, such as flooding and Nor'easters that bring 4 feet of snow.  Still, we are just accustomed to that type of weather and rarely need to do anything special to prepare other than buy extra bottled water.

A few months ago, a hurricane-turned-tropical-storm really had me nervous.  We do not see many hurricanes and we did not know how far we had to go to be truly prepared.  Did we need to purchase dried food so we would have an emergency food supply?  All we ended up doing was buying a variety of crackers and breakfast cereal.  Of course, we did not end up losing power or anything from that storm.

Then in October, we had an unseasonable Nor'easter.  I thought it was not that much snow, but because it was so heavy, so many people lost their power, heat, and hot water from a few days up to a week.  That was completely unexpected.  Without power, our refrigerator, stove, and oven were out of commission.  Luckily, our power came back fairly quickly, but we were not so luck with the heat and hot water.

Just a few days ago, our refrigerator stopped working.  It made me question my decision not to have long term food storage arranged when we were facing that storm.  Although I like the occasional surprise, this is not the kind of surprise I like to get.

Silly Monkey Stories: Chatting About the Weather

This past weekend was when our town's Soccer Fair took place.  This meant that are 7-1/2 year old son not only had practice on Friday, a regular game on Saturday, but also an additional game on Sunday.  The weather has been unseasonably hot and humid for September around here, so there was some concern about rain and also thunderstorms.

I made the mistake of commenting to our twin preschoolers about the chance of bad weather for the weekend.  They asked me if it would rain and be stormy for certain.  I told them that I could not be sure, but the forecast said there was a chance of rain and thunder.  Then our daughter looked at me curiously and asked me . . .

"MumMum, four cats told you that?"

The Kind of Rain I Don't Mind

It has been raining so much in Massachusetts for the past two months, I think we all would like to go at least one week without rain. Heck how about just 2 days?

We have been checking our basement constantly for flooding and I'm sure our children are tired of watching it come down through the windows. It actually turned out to be a nice day today after yesterdays torrential downpours. So wouldn't you know that my husband would send me this video to watch?

It is actually extremely cool! This is the kind of rain I do not mind at all.
