Pardon the Dust . . . 3G2S is Getting a Makeover!

Yes, we took a little vacation while I transitioned from working full time for myself as a blogger to working full time for someone else.  Since I have made this huge change in my life, I've decided to give 3 Garnets & 2 Sapphires a new look.  I will be tackling the template first.  My goal is to simplify it.  Any secondary changes will come gradually to minimize the impact on our readers.

This blog will be turning 7 soon!  What you have to look forward to is fewer sponsored and brand-centric posts, and more crafts, easy recipes, free printables, etc . . .

Thanks for sticking with us all these years!!!  We would be just talking to ourselves without all our awesome readers!

P.S. I'm also working on a brand new blog.  More details to come next month!

3G2S Turns 6 Years Old Today!

GANZ birthday plush animals
I realized only yesterday that 3 Garnets & 2 Sapphires turns 6 years old today.  Shame on me for not planning something great for my wonderful readers.  I bow my head in shame . . .

In all seriousness, I would not have stuck with blogging (and all the work that comes with it) if it weren't for my readers.  If it weren't for you, I would be just talking to myself, and that's not nearly as fun!

I need to give an enormous amount of credit to my family, who puts up with my working too many hours, working on nights and over the weekend, and my occasional stress-induced outbursts.

Also, Jerinda, Todd, and Jake all deserve much recognition for contributing quality content to 3G2S.  The success of this blog is definitely a group effort between them, our families, our readers, and myself.  This is most certainly not a one woman show!

I'm sure I'll blink and find myself composing a 7th year post soon enough.  Until then, I hope to continue to share content with you that is both engaging and fun.  Thanks so much for being a 3G2S reader!!

A Simple Reminder to Maintain Balance in Our Lives

A Simple Reminder to Maintain Balance in Our Lives
If you are a longtime reader, then you may have noticed that things have slowed down here on 3G2S.  This blog will be turning 6 years old in March and this is post number 3,838!  Until 2014 rolled around, I could barely bring myself to go a whole 24 hours without publishing a post.  In fact, I was often publishing multiple blog posts daily and getting by on 4 hours of sleep per night just to make my deadlines.  The truth is that I had burnt out nearly a year ago, but kept going at the same pace.  Why?  Well, partially because I had set a standard and did not want to let my readers down.  The other part was needing to contribute to our household finances as much as possible.

I have shared a few inspirational quotes I've come across in the past, but this is the first and only quote I have displayed in our home (well . . . aside from a few refrigerator magnets).  It reads . . .
"Never get so busy making a living, that you forget to make a life."
I have this wooden sign displayed where my husband and I can see it multiple times per day.  We both work more than we would like because it's necessary, but we need to remember why we are doing it.  It's not so we can buy a larger television or a nicer car.  It's so we can provide for our children, whom we want to be happy and well-rounded.  Part of that is having parents who aren't exhausted and grouchy all the time, who have just enough time and energy to help them with their homework and prepare the meals, but little else.

When I put my mind to it, I am able to make some lasting fond memories for our children.  So, if you don't see a new post from me for 2 or 3 (or 5) days, it doesn't mean I've deserted you.  I'm talking with my children, playing games with them, surprising them with freshly baked cookies,  . . . or taking a much-needed nap.

I haven't quite achieved the perfect balance in my life yet, but I think I'm on the right track by accepting the fact that I cannot have so many full time jobs at once.  It is impossible to be successful at all of them.

What do you do to help maintain balance in your life?

How to Turn the Customizable "M by Staples Arc System" Notebook into a Blogging Organizer (Free Printables)

Thank you to Staples for providing complimentary product samples to facilitate this project.  All opinions expressed are my own.

For the past four years or so, I have been using a serious day planner.  By "serious" I mean that it had two pages per day, a pocket for my portable drive, a complete A to Z address book, sleeves for business cards, and more.  This organizer was so cumbersome that I never took it anywhere with me and I just ended up leaving it open on my desk all the time.  I could also only fit 3 months of refills in the planner at one time.  In addition to this organizer, I used a separate small notebook to keep track of product reviews.  I also used large Post-Its as page markers and to write ongoing to do lists, so that I could just move it to another page instead of having to copy the list over.  This definitely was not the best system, but I had been using it for so many years, I had grown accustomed to it. When I was introduced to the M by Staples Arc System, I saw this as an opportunity to streamline my daily planning.

To help me with this endeavor, Staples provided me with everything I needed (plus a few other fun home office products) to build my own blogging organizer . . .

I will be describing how I set up my Junior Arc to turn it into a basic daily blogging planner below, but the M by Staples Arc System is so versatile that you can easily change it to meet your own needs.

Step 1.  Remove most of the ruled paper that came with your Junior Arc Notebook.  I just left 2 or 3 sheets in case I needed scrap paper to jot something down for someone else.

Step 2.  Print out the free blogging planner pages I made at the bottom of this post (or make your own).  Fold the pages in half with the printed side facing out.  Then insert the shaded edge of the folded piece of paper into the Arc System Desktop Punch, while lining it up with the easy-to-use guide for Junior Arc-sized pages.

Once the page is in place, push the handle all the way down to punch the slotted holes in the paper.

Step 3.  Decide what sections you would like to have in your planner.  My organizer has ruled paper, a Notes section, a Photos/Ideas Log section, a Review Log section, a Calender Planner section, and a Contacts section.  Then insert the Arc System Tab Dividers between each section and label them with the included self-adhesive tab labels.

Step 4.  I took a page off the Arc System Task Pad to use as a page marker and an ongoing to do list that I can move from week to week, if needed.

Step 5.  To save room, I removed the pages of the Arc System Week/Month Calendar Refills that I no longer needed.  I highly recommend putting 6 months of refills in at a time.  How often do you need to go back to previous months in your day planner, right?  These refills also come with a regular monthly calendar at the beginning of each month so you can jot down any important events just as you would on a wall calendar.

Because the 3-Year Reference Calendar is only printed on the front of the first page for January, I cut off the January tab with scissors and placed the whole page inside an Arc System Pocket Divider.  Since the divider is larger than a standard page, I put the calendar at the very end of my notebook.  It worked out perfectly and I can read the 3-year calendar right through the pocket.

For the specialty double-sided blogging organizational pages, you really only have to print them as you need them.  There is no need to add extra bulk to your planner just to store the extra blank pages.  On the same note, you can easily remove any pages that you no longer need.

I also created a page for any notes you may need to jot down or record.  Our children are on a points system where they can earn (and lose) points based on their behavior and how they handle their responsibilities.  Everyday, I need to make a note of how many points each child has earned or lost.  This page works out perfectly for that, but it really has an infinite number of uses.

TO PRINT:  Be sure your computer's printer is on and ready to go.  Click on the desired page to enlarge.  Then right-click on the image and choose print.  Use your browser's back arrow to return to this page.

Product Review Log
This printable is designed to record all your product reviews, with places to mark whether (or when) the product was received, the scheduled posting date (or due date), whether the post is a review and/or a giveaway, and a place for special notes.

Photos and Topic Ideas Log
This printable is designed to list out everything you need to take photos of for upcoming posts.  There is also a place to record any future blog post ideas you may have.

Notes
This printable is a versatile place to jot down notes, whether it is for blogging, parenting, or something else.  It is a good way not to waste paper because we often use one notepad page or one Post-It per note.

To view all the M By Staples Arc System products, visit your local Staples store or Staples online.  Why not get Mom an Arc System Leather or Poly Notebook along with a Staples gift card for Mother's Day?  That way she can customize the notebook to fit her own personal needs.

3G2S Turns 5 Today!

It is difficult to believe, but 3 Garnets & 2 Sapphires turns 5 years old today.  At the beginning of each calendar year, I usually make at least one resolution involving my blog.  I did not make one this year.  It saves me the massive amount of guilt I usually feel when I break that resolution.  The truth is that, even after 5 years, my blog is still evolving.  What may be a great idea for my blog today, may not be a good idea for my blog in 6 months.

This is what I would like to see for our 6th year . . .
  • An increased focus on shopping and fashion for women, men, and children
  • An increased frequency of posts sharing easy recipes and simple crafts
  • Continued product reviews by our contributing writer Jerinda about Asperger's, homeschooling, living green, children's books, fun toys, and more.
  • New content by contributing writer (and husband) Todd about tech tips, gadgets, pets, products for geeks, fatherhood, and more.
  • Continued family-friendly reader giveaways
I very much look forward to another great year.  My blog would not have survived this many years without my family, my contributors, our readers, and the continued support of the MomDot blogging community.  For these I am very thankful.

The Fairy Hobmother Continues to Spread Joy Around the Blogosphere

For many months, the Fairy Hobmother has been spreading joy around the blogosphere.  I first heard about the Fairy Hobmother on the Tales of a Ranting Ginger blog, where I had left a comment on her post about having received a visit last month.

The blogosphere is a huge place, so if you own a blog, leave a comment below along with the link to your blog to give the Fairy Hobmother a hint about who to visit in the future.  When you do get a visit, you will receive a surprise that is sure to bring you joy.  No, it's not a new washer and dryer, nor is it a new car, but I promise it is something wonderful.

Oh, and you must have patience.  The Fairy Hobmother is extremely busy and may not be able to stop by for quite some time.

I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating in this campaign.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Adding a Print Friendly Button to a Blogger Blog With a Modified Template

At the request of some of my readers, I have added a print button to all of my posts.  This is mainly so that readers can easily print out recipes or craft tutorials without printing out the whole page.  This button is located on the upper-right corner of each post right below the post title and will allow you to print only the important text and images.

3G2S is a Blogger blog with a modified template.  I was able to add the free button from PrintFriendly.com directly into my template's html by using the code for a "website".  If you have a standard Blogger template, then you can choose the "Blogger/Blogpost" option.  The instructions are for adding the print button to the bottom of your posts, but I felt comfortable enough with editing my blog's html to add it into my template at the top of my post, where I much prefer it.  If you are not comfortable with html, then I recommend following the instructions provided by PrintFriendly.com for adding the button to your post footer.  If you are too nervous to touch your html at all, then there is an option to add the print button to your sidebar in a widget.

If you share recipes, crafts, or other tutorials on your blog, your readers would likely appreciate your making your posts "print-friendly."

My Guest Post on the "Remaking June Cleaver" Blog

While my friend Kenda is on a bloggy vacation, I had the pleasure of writing a guest post for her blog Remaking June Cleaver.  The post shares a survival kit for parents with sore throats and laryngitis, a timely topic since I have been sick for two weeks now.  I would love it if you popped over to Kenda's blog to read this short post.  I think you might get a kick out of it, especially if you have ever had to care for children while sick with a bad cold or flu.

3G2S Turned 4 Today!

I just realized last week that my blog turns 4 today!  I could not believe that another year had gone by.  Looking back, my blog has evolved so much since its conception in 2008.  And after four years, I am still fine tuning it, but I think I most likely will always be.

Building this site was really a full time job.  I have to thank my husband, who also contributes to this blog, and my children for being so understanding (most of the time) about all the time I have spent doing this.  It took 4 years, but I am finally at a point where I am closer to finding balance between being a professional blogger and the rest of my life.  It was only during the past few months that I was able to not lose sleep if I went a whole calendar day without publishing new content.  Now, I can even go two days without feeling guilty.  I never thought I would ever be able to do that.

I also need to thank the community of mom bloggers and dad bloggers to which I have belonged for over 3-1/2 years.  I have learned so much from these bloggers, who have been there all these years for me to bounce ideas off of and to just provide advice and support.  One of the main things I have learned from this community is that we are all different and that I just need to do what feels right to me as far as my blog is concerned.

One of the biggest positive changes I had made to my blog over the years is to invite Jerinda to be a contributor.  She brings content to 3G2S readers that I would never be able to provide, especially the articles she writes about living green and about having a child with Asperger's.

Of course, without our readers (past, present, and future), I would just be talking to myself.  Although, I do that sometimes, blogging would not be nearly as enjoyable and rewarding without our readers.  I truly hope we will all be here a year from now celebrating my 5th blogoversary.

What Form Builder Do You Use for Your Blog or Small Business?

Since I began blogging, I have been looking for a good form builder to help me create forms that have a professional appearance.  I currently had a web form for readers and PR professionals to contact me and another for PR professionals to leave feedback after working with me.  One was created by a free form builder I had found and one was created on the cloud.  I am not 100% happy with either one.

I also do a little PR work on the side and have tried using a form created through cloud computing for collecting and organizing information from bloggers.  I have since eliminated the form because it was very limited and not as user-friendly as I would like for both the bloggers and myself.  I would love to find a form generator that has premade templates.  It would need to be something that can be customized.  I could use something like a membership form, but with a few things added.

What type of form builder do you use for your blog or small business?  Of course, I would prefer it to be a free service, but would also consider a good one with a small monthly fee.

Letters To Karen: Does My Mom Read My Blog?

Dear Karen,

You know for sure that at least a small handful of your relatives read your blog, but just never leave any comments.  You seem to have been taking it for granted that your mom must be part of that group.  If she lurks on your personal Facebook page, then it only makes sense that she would do the same on your blog, right?

Well, I think it's time that you consider the possibility that your mother does not read your blog.  If she did, every time she sees you or speaks to you on the phone, she would not say to you, "Give the kids some exercises to do so they can learn something and not waste the whole summer.  Don't let them sit around and watch TV all day!"  Ummm . . . hello?!!  How many more learning activities do you have to write about before she stops saying that to you?

The Importance of Blog Statistics

This blog turned 3 a few months ago.  It was a milestone that prompted me to begin to reevaluate the direction it was going towards and how that lined up with my own needs as the owner, editor-in-chief, and main writer.  For a large portion of the first 3 years, I was highly obsessed with my web site statistics.  This is the reason why that is beginning to change . . .

After all these years, I think I can be considered an "established blogger" who has proven that I provide quality writing, whether it involves personal posts, product reviews, or other types of articles.  Although I do need to continue to monetize my blog in order to contribute to my household's finances, my goal is not to continue to increase my site statistics.  This was happening at the expense of the enjoyment I get out of owning this blog.  I have made the decision to loosely maintain my numbers and replace a portion of the reviews and giveaways I write with other content, such as educational activities for children.  I started reducing the number of giveaways I run a few months ago and, yes, my traffic has dropped slightly, but the ongoing series that I so enjoy writing are getting the attention they deserve from both my readers and myself.

I think ultimately, this change will be a positive one.  It may take awhile to prove this as my readers, both old and new, as they figure out if this site is one they would like to return to regularly.  It took me 3 years to realize that I just cannot please everyone as far as content goes, so I might as well make sure that at least one person is happy . . . me.

New 3G2S Series: Letters To Karen

Recently, my stress level had hit a new high.  Although I have known that I had needed to make some changes for a long time, I just cannot seem to get there.  Where is there?  Well, I need to get to a place where I am not exhausted all the time, where I have more time to spend with my husband and children, and where I can feel more serene (even if it's just for an hour a day).

Right now, I stay up until 1 or 2am almost every night trying to fit in all my responsibilities, which are:

Notice there is no "me time" listed in there?  I have thought long and hard, but I could not bring myself to give up any of the responsibilities listed above, so I am going to try to make some changes.  Some of these changes are ones I have attempted to make in the past, but have failed.  Maybe it will help me to hold myself to it if I put them in writing?
  1. Taking on less product reviews
  2. Telling myself that it is okay to skip a day of blogging now and then
  3. Getting ahead to where I can schedule posts in advance for Saturday and Sunday, so that I can take weekends off
  4. Focusing more time on the educational series I had previously begun . . . Play To Learn Diner and Kindergartner-in-Training
  5. Keeping reviews mostly focused on the two things I enjoy reviewing the most, which are educational/developmental toys and fashion.
The last change I am trying to make is adding this new series to this blog called Letters To Karen.  I have a series about my children called Silly Monkey Stories and one about my husband called For Better or For Worse, but I do not really write about myself directly.  In this series, I will write letters to myself about things I need to tell or remind myself about as far as being being a mother, wife, business owner, and blogger goes.

Hopefully, these changes will help me achieve the balance in my life that I so desperately need.

This is my favorite 1st grade art project brought home by our oldest son this past school year.  It was done during a unit they did on Japan shortly after the tsunamis of 2011.  I just love looking at it and wish we had a scene like this outside our back door.

Is There Such a Thing As a Fairy Blog Mother?

Since 3 Garnets & 2 Sapphires turned 3 earlier this year, I have been examining the path this blog has taken.  What started out as a personal blog created to document the happy moments in my life, both big and small, has turned into quite a lot of work.  Please don't misunderstand this to mean that I am unhappy with the state of my blog and that I am not proud of how it has grown.  It's just that I wish there was a Fairy Blog Mother to worry about SEO and things like landing page optimization and conversion rate optimization.  I just want to go to the ball and have fun.

I see many veteran bloggers starting a separate blog to just write about what they enjoy.  At the beginning of this year, I gave my other blog A Blog of Goodies a makeover, changing it from a contest blog to a shopping blog co-authored by my husband.  I think it was the smartest move I've made in a long time.  It's nice to have an outlet to write just for fun.  I have been trying very hard to keep the PR to a minimum on that site.  I do hope that I can keep up both blogs.  Now I just need to talk to my Fairy Blog Mother about adding a few more hours onto each day.

Free PDF Trial at Adobe CreatePDF

As you may recall, I recently wrote an article about why being able to create PDF files and convert PDF files is important to a blogger.  I had started thinking about this because I am about to do a mini redesign for my blog and I would need to alter my media kit to coordinate with it.  This would be fine if I wanted to leave the media kit in a Word document format, but I would very much like to have a PDF version because it does look much more professional.

So my dilemma was (and still is) about my struggling to decide if I could spend the money on PDF software.  Money is tight right now, so can I really justify the expense?  Well, this free PDF trial might be a solution for anyone in my situation.  One of the benefits of the free trial is that it offers you 5 free PDF conversions. You are required to register with your name, email, password, age, and geographic location.

Has anyone tried this free trial before?  I am curious to know if there are any other requirements aside from the registration.  If not, this would be perfect if you have a specific one-time project to complete.

Why the Ability to Create and Edit PDF Files is Important to a Blogger

Since my blog just turned 3, I have been looking back on all that I have learned during those three years.  One main thing I realized is that a media kit is essential for any blogger who would like to both monetize their blog or review products on that blog.  I admit that I paid a fellow-blogger to create my media kit about a year and a half ago because I did not have the right software to create PDF files or edit PDF files for that matter.  I update my media kit about once a week, and since the free PDF editors out there are so not user-friendly and are very time-consuming to use, I just keep a version of my media kit in Microsoft Word, which unfortunately does not look as professional as a PDF document.

Aside from the ability to create and edit your own media kit, having a PDF software is important for times when you are asked to convert to PDF format samples of your work or to create forms, such as an invoice for companies who do not use Paypal.  I really think I need to take the leap and purchase the right software.  I am about to give my blog a makeover and I will need to create a new coordinating media kit to go along with it.

Blogoversary Giveaway: Feeling Young in Ion Actif Women's Activewear [CLOSED]

On March 7th, 2011 3 Garnets & 2 Sapphires turned 3!  Only instead of feeling excited and accomplished as I did in past years, when this year's blogoversary rolled around, I was actually feeling tired and a little old.  I think 3 years is the equivalent of approaching middle age in the blogging world.  So what made me feel better?  Putting on my women's performance activewear by Ion Actif!  Read on to find out why . . .

For just about every clothing review I write, I always include a disclaimer about how I still have a bit of a belly from carrying our twins (who are now 4).  I did not have to include such a disclaimer in this review because the two pieces I selected, the Ion Actif Scoop Tank and the Cargo Capri, fit me perfectly.  I requested an XL in the tank and a Medium in the pants.  I was so pleased about the fit of the tank.  I did not even have to inhale and hold my breath for the photo.  Usually I would need to order a 2XL in a top to get the relaxed fit I am looking for, but this tank achieves that fit with a straight cut and graceful gathers at the neckline.  I also think the length is perfect, hitting right at the hip.

The Supplex/Nylon and Lycra/Spandex pants fit like a glove.  They are cute enough to wear everyday.  The two back pockets and the side cargo pocket make it possible for you  to travel light.  The cargo pocket is located on the left leg and is large enough to hold my Windows phone.

The "mom" uniform around here is usually a zip-up hoodie paired with bootcut yoga pants or jeans.  That outfit does not quite work in the warmer weather, but this one by Ion Actif would be perfect.  It has a clean tailored style, is comfortable, and is designed to keep you cool while you sweat.  What could be more perfect for a busy mom on the go?

To learn about Ion Actif Performance Activewear for Women, visit IonActif.com, Ion Actif on Facebook, and on Twitter.  You can purchase Ion Actif Activewear on ParagonSports.com, EverythingYoga.com, and locally in many states.

Thank you to Ion Actif for providing a complimentary product sample for us to base this review upon and for providing additional product for our contest prize.
