My Photos: A Reminder of What It's Really All About

I have been in a real rut lately.  The fact is that I have been burnt out for months.  When I work, I seem to be going at half the pace I used to, so it feels like I am just working all the time when I am not tending to my children.  On those days when I'm feeling especially run-down and under-appreciated (and counting the days until summer vacation is over), I wonder why I am able to plug along day after day.

I took the photo below at dinner last night.  Those aren't fake smile-for-the-camera smiles.  My family is genuinely happy and having fun.  After I took this photo, I realized that they are why I keep going.  I'm going to put this photo on my desktop so, if I ever begin to forget again (maybe while I'm up until 1am working because I couldn't get enough done during the day), I'll have an instant reminder.

Successful Moms: Own Your Skills

This article was brought to you by Sam Peters.

I was thinking lately about an article I'd read describing how the most successful businesswomen are the ones who own their skills.

Well, a home is a business too, right? A successful home shares many qualities of a successful business:
  • It brings people together to work and collaborate as a team
  • Its members work together to achieve shared goals
  • It follows a code of behavior and ethics, providing disciplinary measures as appropriate
  • It needs to earn more money than it spends
This means that you, as combination CEO/CFO/Mom, need to own your skills and put them into practice. Here are some of the key skills for successful moms to own:

Maximizing profits
A successful business focuses on bringing in money, and a successful mom/provider does too. Every little bit helps, whether it's asking for a raise, training for a better-paying job or even putting ads on your website to bring in a few extra dollars.

Even though it seems mercenary to focus on money, you need to own this skill because it benefits your entire family. The more profit you bring in, the better you can prepare for college educations and retirements. Having a healthy emergency fund is also an important part of running a successful "family business."

Minimizing expenses
You are probably already highly-skilled at differentiating between wants and needs, but there are other ways to minimize monthly expenses. Don't let your hard-earned profits slip away on items like credit card debt or unnecessary bills.

For credit cards, seek out credit card offers with balance transfer promotions, switch your cards to a zero-balance offer, claim the promotional rewards and PAY OFF YOUR DEBT!

Then call up your utility companies and negotiate lower monthly bills. For example, you can save up to $54/month by switching to a cheaper wireless plan. It's frustrating to have to call customer service, but own your negotiation skills and work to cut at least $100 out of your monthly utility budget.

Communicating goals
Teamwork only happens when each member of the team knows what the goals are and how to achieve them. If you want a clean house every week, every person on the team needs to know how to define "clean," which actions achieve "clean" and when they need to complete those actions. Otherwise you end up with someone who thinks they've cleaned the bathroom but hasn't yet swept the floors.

More importantly, you need to own the skills of talking to your family about larger-scale goals. Everything you value, from education to sibling harmony, is actually a goal. If you never talk to your children about how to treat each other, or why homework is important, they'll never understand why the family goals are worth achieving.

Providing feedback
Lastly, you need to own the skill of providing feedback. Sometimes a short conversation is enough; other times you need to take disciplinary action. Just like a real business, make sure disciplinary measures are stated in advance and applied fairly and consistently; this is the best way to teach children that actions have appropriate consequences.

You need to provide appropriate feedback to your partner as well as your children. If your partner fails one part of the family goals, like regularly arriving late to family dinner or speaking disrespectfully about you or the kids, it's time to have a talk. Owning your skills means not letting anger and resentments linger.

My Photos: Mother's Day Memories

I know Mother's Day was nearly a full week ago, but I am just getting around to sharing my photos now.  The one below was taken with my Nokia Lumia 920 Windows phone and the rest with my D-SLR.  Sometimes I am amazed at the quality of the photos taken with my phone.  When the light is just right, the photos really do come out wonderfully.  I only wish it had a macro setting.

It seems like every year on Mother's Day, I subject the children to a mini photo shoot.  It's a great way for us to see how much they have changed over the coarse of one year.  As always, I am floored at how much each child has grown and blossomed, but more so this year with our daughter.  She is only 6 years old, but seems like she's heading full speed ahead towards becoming a tween.  She needs to slow down.  I don't think I'm ready for it and I know my husband is not.

This is our 6 year old son.  Thankfully, he enjoys being a child and is in no hurry to grow up.  He is quite the charmer though.  Somehow he's learned to turn on that sweet smile along with a little twinkle in his eyes especially for the ladies.  He's definitely going to be a heartbreaker.

Here is our 9 year old son who is the cool big brother.  He is at that special age where he can go back and forth between being a little kid and young man.  On Mother's Day, I could not believe I had been a mom for almost a decade.  Where did the time go?

One more photo of our princess . . .

This year on Mother's Day, I was really overwhelmed with the lengths the children went through with handmade gifts and cards.  The one below was made by our 6 year old son in his art class.  It's a mama bird watching over her eggs in a nest.

The necklace below was made for me by our 6 year old daughter.  I actually have a similar one made by her big brother when he was in kindergarten.  I wore it to Mother's Day dinner at my sister's house Sunday evening.

Along with an elegant ring containing 3 Garnets (my children's birthstones), I also received poems, handmade books, cards, and drawings.  These are all going in my keepsake box and I will cherish them forever!

What was your favorite memory about Mother's Day this year?

Letters To Karen: Surviving The Last Weeks of Summer Vacation

Dear Karen,

If you're counting (and I know you are), there are only 11 days until the start of the new school year.  That may seem like an eternity to you, since you did not think you would survive summer vacation at all, but just keep the following things in mind to help you get through the next week and a half . . .

1.  There will not be children home 24/7 making messes in every room in the house.  If you clean the pee off the toilet seat, it will still be clean when you return to use it in an hour or two.

2.  You will be able to work during the day without being interrupted every 5 minutes by a child who is bored, who wants to tattle on their brother or sister, who is hungry, or just wants to put a toy as close to your face as possible.

3.  You will be able to get more than 5 hours of sleep because you won't need to stay up far too late to do your work or just to enjoy a whole hour of quiet.

4.  You will be able to take a shower without a child needing to use the bathroom, leading you to be trapped into a 15-minute conversation about how many poops he might still have left to come out.

5.  If you're tired, you will actually be able to lie down for a short nap without being woken up every 5 minutes. (See No. 2)

Every time you feel like you need to be admitted to the nearest loony bin, just remind yourself of the 5 things above.  You can make it through until the first day of school!

Letters To Karen: New Year's Reso . . . What?

Dear Karen,

Now that it is nearly June and we are 5 whole months into the year, I thought it would be a good idea to check-up on you to see how well you have been doing with those New Year's resolutions you made on January 1st.  You didn't forget about those, did you?  Let's see how things are going . . .

1.  Observe, enjoy, and celebrate all the small changes in your children - I'd say you have made some effort with this one, but you really need to try harder.  You were doing so well at the beginning to not be too busy to do this, but during the past month or so you have progressively become busier again.

2.  Have a date night with your husband at least once a month - You have totally failed on this one.  Out of the 5 date nights you should have had by now, you have had zero, if you don't count watching a movie on DVD one time.  Tsk!  Tsk!!

3.  Learn the art of creating clipart - You have spent no time on this at all.  You have been too busy to even think about doing this and too busy to even feel guilty about not doing this.  It's shameful!

Now that you are overcome with guilt and disappointment, I want to remind you that the year is not over.  There are still 7 months left for you to turn this year around.  If you're looking for more of a pep talk than that, then you're looking in the wrong place.

Letters To Karen: Someday . . .

Dear Karen,

I know you have been suffering from a bad cold for 3 weeks now.  It has been so long since you could speak without coughing, it is almost starting to feel like the norm to you.  Perhaps your children have grown accustomed to your violent coughing, as well?

Someday in the future, when you are having a coughing fit that is causing you to turn red with tears streaming down your face due to your having trouble breathing, one of your children will ask if you're okay or if you would like a glass of water instead of asking you, "MumMum, why is your face turning pink?" with a giggle.  When your children reach the right age, they will do that.  Apparently, 8, 5, and 5 are not the right age.

Letters To Karen: Even Mild OCD Affects Your Family

Dear Karen,

You have been thinking about this for two months now, so it is obviously bothering you.  Everyone knows you are a little obsessive-compulsive and feel most comfortable when everything is in its place.  You have actually gotten much better since the arrival of twins nearly 5 years ago.

So what if your oldest son wrote you a letter in honor of your visit to his class in which the first sentence (out of 3 sentences total) said, "I hope you like how neat my desk is!"?  That does not mean you have driven your son down the road to needing therapy . . . not yet at least.

Letters To Karen: Revenge is Not the Key to More Sleep

Dear Karen,

I know it looked like you were going to get to sleep more than 6 hours last night, but it just was not meant to be.  You should know by now that you are destined to be tired and run-down.  The sooner you accept that, the better it will be for everyone.

I know you are thinking about taking revenge on those who woke you up 3 times over the course of one hour (long before you had to get up) for things that could have waited, but the satisfaction you'll get from waking them up multiple times tomorrow starting at 5am will only last a short amount of time.  In the long run, you will not get any more sleep as a result of these actions.

New 3G2S Series: Letters To Karen

Recently, my stress level had hit a new high.  Although I have known that I had needed to make some changes for a long time, I just cannot seem to get there.  Where is there?  Well, I need to get to a place where I am not exhausted all the time, where I have more time to spend with my husband and children, and where I can feel more serene (even if it's just for an hour a day).

Right now, I stay up until 1 or 2am almost every night trying to fit in all my responsibilities, which are:

Notice there is no "me time" listed in there?  I have thought long and hard, but I could not bring myself to give up any of the responsibilities listed above, so I am going to try to make some changes.  Some of these changes are ones I have attempted to make in the past, but have failed.  Maybe it will help me to hold myself to it if I put them in writing?
  1. Taking on less product reviews
  2. Telling myself that it is okay to skip a day of blogging now and then
  3. Getting ahead to where I can schedule posts in advance for Saturday and Sunday, so that I can take weekends off
  4. Focusing more time on the educational series I had previously begun . . . Play To Learn Diner and Kindergartner-in-Training
  5. Keeping reviews mostly focused on the two things I enjoy reviewing the most, which are educational/developmental toys and fashion.
The last change I am trying to make is adding this new series to this blog called Letters To Karen.  I have a series about my children called Silly Monkey Stories and one about my husband called For Better or For Worse, but I do not really write about myself directly.  In this series, I will write letters to myself about things I need to tell or remind myself about as far as being being a mother, wife, business owner, and blogger goes.

Hopefully, these changes will help me achieve the balance in my life that I so desperately need.

This is my favorite 1st grade art project brought home by our oldest son this past school year.  It was done during a unit they did on Japan shortly after the tsunamis of 2011.  I just love looking at it and wish we had a scene like this outside our back door.

Giveaway & Review: Mom's Survival Guide (2 Winners) [CLOSED]

Since your first child was born, how many days have you wished that your children came with a manual? For me, it certainly has been more days than I can count.

The editors of Redbook Magazine have published a book titled "Mom's Survival Guide: Save Time, Money, and Your Sanity." This book covers some of the most common issues faced by parents across its 230 pages. The great thing about this book is that you can use it for reference, rather than being required to read it from cover to cover. Some of the topics that were most helpful to me were how to deal with tantrums, sanity-savers for work-at-home moms, helping kids sleep all night, and getting your family to eat healthy.

There are some topics that every parent worries about because there is only so much a parent can do to protect their children. Some of those are bullying, teaching children to be street smart, illnesses, and sport injuries. This book touches on all those. In fact, I do not think that most of these topics are restricted to mothers. The book should really be titled "Parent's Survival Guide."

This book retails for $16.95 and can be found at major book retailers, such as Borders, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon.com .

Mother's Day 2010 Photos (Part 1)

This Mother's Day, my 6yr old son had a surprise for me. He actually told me he had a surprise for me the week before and then asked me where he should hide it so I wouldn't see it.

It turned out that he had made a beautiful card for me with a poem inside. Here is the translation:

Roses are red,
Violets are blue,
Apples are sweet
And so are you.

To accompany the card, he also made this beautiful handcrafted pendant on a ribbon necklace. I think he did a great job, don't you? I can totally see why he was so proud and excited to present it to me. His 3yr old brother said he thought it looked like a meatball with ice cream on it. I think that was meant to be a compliment because it sounds like something he would actually eat.

Below are photos of me with each of my beautiful children . . .

Look for more photos to come from Mother's Day dinner at my sister's and brother-in-law's house.
