Review: Chuggington "Terrific Trainee!" App for the iPod, iPhone, and iPad

Chuggington is a favorite television show around here, so when we were offered a game, Chuggington Terrific Trainee! app, for our iPod, we were thrilled to try it. In this fun game for preschoolers and early grade schoolers, you help the various character trains from the show get from one station to another while avoiding or jumping over obstacles. Children can have the trains switch tracks with just the swipe of their finger, as well.

This game is fun, simple, and highly entertaining to Quinn, who is 4 years old. He loves the mini games where you pick up freight and deliver it on time and thinks watching the trains jump over obstacles is hilarious. It has both an easy and a hard setting, and he’s nearly mastered the former of the two. I’ve spent some time playing on both levels as well and thought it was a perfect attention-keeping app for children 3-7 years old or so. I highly recommend this app for your little tech-savvy kid and Chuggington lover.

You can purchase this Chuggington app for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod in the App Store on iTunes for $1.99.

Chuggington Chugger Championship Rev'n Race Railway Deluxe Playset & DVD

If you are a fan of battery-free toys, the Chuggington Chugger Championship Rev'n Race Deluxe Playset could very well be one of the coolest "kid-powered" toys of the year.  This set, which is part of the Chuggington Die-cast line, has a hand-cranked launcher that is powerful enough to make Koko travel all the way around the track.  There is also a friction-based starting line.  Any Chuggington fan would be thrilled to find this 4-foot long track set up under the tree on Christmas morning.  And, as the gift-giver,  you will be happy that you did not have the extra expense of buying batteries for this toy.  You may also be happy to know that this track works with other Chuggington die-cast engines.

(Click any photo to enlarge)

As you can see, there are many parts to this train set, so you will not want to wait until the last minute to assemble it.  Overall the assembly was easy because most of the track pieces are marked with an alpha-numeric code.  All you need to do is follow the illustrated instructions and look for two pieces that have the same code.  There were, however, 3 places where the connections were different than the rest.  I had a lot of difficulty with those places.  My husband also had difficulty, but was ultimately able to force the pieces together.

Once you get past that little bump in the road, the Rev'n Race Railway is loads of fun.  Even as an adult, I thought it was pretty cool.  Here are the basic steps for using this toy:

1)  Push the Chuggington sign down until it clicks into place and the red stopper pops up in the track.

2)  Put Koko at the starting line and into the red stopper's notch.

3)  Make sure Vee is turned so that Koko will travel towards the launch tunnel with the crank on top.

4)  Push the lever down to start the friction-based timer for the starting line.  Then immediately start cranking the launcher while holding onto one of the yellow handles.

5)  Continue to crank the launcher as fast as you can until Koko makes it through the tunnel and shoots out the other side. (Our 4.5 year old twins could not crank the shooter quite fast enough to give Koko the momentum needed to go up the ramp, but their 7.5 year old brother had no problems with it.)

(As Koko shoots through the tunnel, she causes the rotary saw to spin.)

6)  As Koko crosses the start/finish line, you can either have her go through the launcher again for another lap or you can turn Vee so that Koko goes towards the fueling pump to claim her trophy.

A great little gift to use as an add-on or a stocking stuffer for your little Chugger is the Chuggington: The Chugger Championship DVD.  This DVD contains 6 Chuggington episodes, including The Chugger Championship.  Like with all Chuggington episodes, these teach your children about friendship and responsibility.

You can purchase both the playset and the DVD at the Official Online Chuggington Store, Toys"R"Us, and on Amazon.com.  To learn more about Chuggington, visit Chuggington.com, Chuggington on Facebook, and Chuggington on Twitter.

Thank you to Chuggington for providing complimentary product samples for us to base this review upon and for providing additional products for our contest prize.

Chuggington Traffic Safety Pledge Safety Kit & Vest

In September, Chuggington announced its partnership with the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) on a traffic safety campaign geared towards young children who are still learning how to be smart when it comes to walking and riding.  What better time to draw attention to traffic safety than during International Walk to School Month?

I have to tell you that every child is different.  Our preschool-aged twins, for example, have very different levels of safety consciousness.  Our daughter will stop at the corner and wait for me to cross the street, whereas her twin brother will try to just walk right out even though I remind him not to every single day.  For children like him, who do not heed their parents' warnings, I am happy that Chuggington is willing to step in to help teach them traffic safety.

As part of Chuggington's "Think Safe, Ride Safe, Be Safe!" campaign, parents and their little ones can visit  the Chuggington website to find safety tips about walking, riding the school bus, bike riding, using a car seat, and more.  They can also sign the Traffic Safety Pledge, play fun games, and find Chuggington coloring pages on the site.  Keep your eyes open for shorts about traffic safety on Disney Junior throughout the month of October, as well.

Thank you to Chuggington for providing a Traffic Safety Kit for our children and for providing a prize pack for our contest winner.

5 Alternative Uses for Unused Lunch Boxes

From year to year, children's favorite characters change quite often.  As a result, parents are finding themselves treating their children to a new backpack and lunch box or tote almost every year.  So, aside from donating them, what can parents do with the unused lunch boxes?  I began thinking about this when the twins were sent these bright and cheery Chuggington Lunch Kits.  They attend half day preschool, so there is no need to pack lunches for them.

Since I was brought up to reuse as many things as possible, I made it my mission to think of alternate uses for these lunch boxes.  My children love Chuggington, so I did not want to just put them in the closet for a whole year until kindergarten started.

(Click any photo to enlarge)

Here are 5 practical ways to make use of unused lunch boxes . . .

1)  A Snack Tote - When the twins attend their big brother's soccer games, we always have to bring a small snack for them and bottles of water.  Instead of throwing everything into the outer pockets of our son's soccer bag, the twins could carry their own snack using one of these lunch boxes.

2)  Store On-the-Go Toys - Use a lunch box to store toys the children like to take with them often, whether it be for a visit to their grandparent's house or for a long car ride.  Then each child can just grab their already-filled lunch box and head out the door.

3)  A Pretend Play Picnic Basket or Suitcase - When presented with the opportunity, a child will just take an idea and run with it.  Offering your child a lunch box to use as a picnic basket, suitcase, or briefcase will offer them many possible scenarios for pretend play.

4)  A Library Bag - Most lunch boxes are large enough to hold small to medium sized children's books.  They would make great library bags for carrying borrowed books to and from the library.  Also, young children would feel such a sense of independence to be able to carry their own books.

5)  A Shoe Bag - A lunch box would be the perfect size for carrying your little one's ballet, tap, or jazz shoes.  There would likely be room leftover to fit a skirt, a dance shrug, and a bottle of water.  I wish I had thought of this before I spent $20 on a shoe bag for my daughter.

Do you have other ideas for more ways to use unused lunch boxes?  We would love to hear about them!

All Around Chuggington Train Set

At the beginning of this year, we had the opportunity to review the original U.K. version of the All Around Chuggington Train Set, which is part of the Chuggington Interactive Railway line by Learning Curve.  The children had so much fun with it and just loved hearing their favorite Chuggers' voices with a British accent.  Now that the U.S. version is available, we were able to see how it compares.

(Click any image to enlarge)

This 60pc set comes ready-to-use with 11 AA batteries included.  It includes Wilson and one hopper car for him to tow.  If you have more than one child, then you may want to consider picking up one or more additional Interactive Engines.  Since the Chuggers recognize each other, the more engines you have, the more expressions and sounds your child will hear.  In addition to the Chuggers recognizing each other, each of the three interactive stops recognizes each engine and the engines, in turn, can recognize each stop.

Here is a small sampling of the sounds you will hear during one loop around the track . . .

I do think that a parent or an older child needs to assemble the track.  Our nearly 8 year old son might be able to do it on his own with the instructions.

Out of all the stops, I think my children's favorite is the loading yard.  The sounds are very realistic and the crates make unexpected sounds also, depending on what is inside them.  It really makes the set come to life for my children.

The downhill spiral is also one of my children's favorite parts because it is the only part of the track where the Chuggers can move forward on their own (with a little help from gravity) without a child moving it.

If your child is a fan of the Disney Junior show Chuggington, then I think he or she will love this train set also.  It truly captures the charm of each Chugger and Vee too.  To learn more about the All Around Chuggington Set, visit LearningCurve.com.  You can purchase this set at the Learning Curve Shop, Toys"R"Us, Amazon.com, and from other major toy retailers.

Kindergartner-In-Training: VTech Chuggington Learning Laptop

As the summer goes by, I am seeing more and more how different our twins are when it comes to learning.  Our 4.5 year old daughter responds well to all types of learning activities, including traditional ones, just like her big brother.  Her twin brother, however, is not enthusiastic at all about traditional learning.  It has been frustrating for both him and myself.  I have discovered that I need to find more ways for him to learn while doing things disguised as play.

VTech, a trusted brand of electronic learning toys, offers a wide variety of learning laptops for preschoolers.  Last month, the VTech Chuggington Laptop was added to their line of licensed character products.  Although our twins can somewhat use a regular laptop, this one made by VTech was definitely designed with preschoolers in mind.  In addition to the bright colors and being able to see the ever-popular Wilson sitting on a turntable through the acrylic window, this toy laptop has many features that make it user-friendly for children ages 3 to 5.

Your child can choose between 5 different learning categories, Explore and Learn, Language, Numbers, Games, and Adventure, by simply turning Wilson to face the desired category.  No reading required!  The categories are each clearly marked with an easy to understand symbol.  For the convenience of the parents, the 40 different activities available under the first four categories are listed out right on the laptop.

Using the arrow keys and the "Enter" key on a computer is something everyone needs to know how to do.  Both are in the form of large easy to press buttons and are located apart from the letter keys.  Even an adult can find it confusing when the arrow keys are embedded among a sea of other keys on the keyboard.

Aside from the number and alphabet keys, there are only two others on the main part of the keyboard . . . a "Help" key and an "Answer" key.  Pressing the "Help" button will prompt the laptop to give your child a hint about the current question.  If your child is completely stumped, then he or she can press the "Answer" button to reveal the correct answer.

As a parent, I like that the laptop has a volume and brightness setting.  I also think it is super-helpful to have the numbers and letters shown in order.  My children are still learning letter and number recognition, so it is great that they can sing the alphabet or count to ten and be able to point to the appropriate letter or number as they go.  I think the way the numbers are displayed is especially helpful for when the laptop asks which number is bigger and which number is smaller.  I just tell my children that the numbers are shown from smallest to biggest.

As I had mentioned, our daughter is an avid learner.  She enjoys all learning activities I present her with, so having a learning toy is even more enjoyable.  At first, she kept asking me what the answers were for the questions she did not know, but I encouraged her to guess.  I told her that it was perfectly fine to get the answer wrong because that is how she learns new things.  When the laptop gives her the correct answer, then she will know what it is for next time.  Before I knew it, she played all the games independently.  Every time she got an answer right, she would jump up and down cheering with excitement.  Each time she hears the train  toot, she calls out, "Honkin' horns!" with delight.  Her favorite activity is the Tool Matching game, but she also enjoys earning badges in Adventure Mode.

Her twin brother, on the other hand, has very little confidence with learning.  He is hesitant to guess the answer for any question.  We even had his big brother sit with him for awhile to help him and give him hints.  Ultimately, I learned that he likes to play with this laptop on his own when nobody is watching or even in the room with him.  He feels more comfortable about making mistakes during those times.

You can currently find the Chuggington Traintastic Laptop by VTech at Toys "R" Us and Amazon.com.  Remember to check your local TV listings for Chuggington on Disney Junior this summer and fall.

Thank you to Chuggington for providing a complimentary product sample for us to base this review upon and for providing a second product for our contest prize.
