Giveaway & Review: "Yogi Bear" Movie Blu-ray/DVD Combo (2 Winners) [CLOSED]

Our 7 year old son has been waiting for the new Yogi Bear movie to come out on DVD for months.  He was able to watch the movie a few days early, but come March 22nd, the wait is over for all the other Yogi Bear fans out there.

Having grown up watching the animated Yogi Bear show on television, my husband and I were skeptical about how well the film would be able to capture the charm of Yogi and the innocence of Boo Boo.  Our 7 year old son had watched the cartoon several times before, but our 4 year old twins had only once or twice.  Although the viewer does not need to have past experience with Yogi Bear to follow or enjoy the film, those who have will be able to pick out the classic Yogi Bear trademarks, such as stating that he is "smarter than the average bear."

The picnic basket-stealing bear Yogi (Dan Aykroyd), his best friend Boo Boo (Justin Timberlake), Ranger Smith (Tom Cavanagh), and documentary filmmaker Rachel (Ana Faris) team up to save Jellystone Park from being closed down by the power-hungry Mayor Brown (Andrew Daly).  Aykroyd and Timberlake did well in their roles, but there were not too many opportunities to let their own personalities shine through.  Cavanagh portrayed a version of Ranger Smith that was less stern and serious than I remembered the park ranger to be, but it worked.

Although this film is rated PG, I found it perfectly suitable for our preschoolers.  Though the movie was able to hold our 3 children's attention, I did not hear them laugh out loud.  Despite this, our children all said that they enjoyed the film, when asked.  As usual, the physical comedy was our 7 year old son's favorite part.  As for my husband and I, we found this movie to be entertaining enough, but it was most certainly more geared towards children than adults.

Yogi Bear will be available on a Blu-ray/DVD combo, DVD, digital download, and on On Demand starting March 22nd, 2011.  Visit YogiBear.WarnerBros.com to learn more about this film.

Thank you to Warner Bros. Advanced Digital Services for providing a complimentary product sample for us to base this review upon and for providing additional product for our contest prizes.

Review: Despicable Me (DVD)

We just recently received a DVD copy of Despicable Me from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. I want to say before anything else this movie is charming and a lot of fun.

The main character is a super villain named Gru (played by Steve Carell) and is instantly likable. Although Gru and his minions adhere to every single movie villain cliche, the movie focuses on the other side of a super villains life. The movie highlights the every day life of a super villain living is a typical suburb. Universal did an outstanding job of taking the typical super villain and showing us a really interesting and fun alternate view. Freeze ray to bypass the coffee shop line anyone?

My 7 year old son was particularly taken by the slapstick nature of Gru's minions. They are cute and devilish and really take the fun of the movie to a higher level. The minions are the perfect blend of Umpa Loompas, evil minions, and the Three Stooges.

The DVD extras are short but interesting and they include fun add libbed interviews with the actors and producers that provide extra insight into the themes and story. Steve Carell is a riot and was perfectly cast as Gru.

I recommend Despicable Me with two thumbs way up (can I say that?). This movie is for all ages including the hardest to please adults. The humor is obvious enough for young viewers and there is enough subtle adult humor to make you laugh out loud.

Make Despicable Me your next choice for family movie night!  You can find this movie in a Blu-ray/DVD combo or a DVD at Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Target, and most other major movie retailers.

Review: The Spy Next Door (DVD)

On May 18th, The Spy Next Door hit store shelves on both DVD and on a Blu-ray/DVD combo. Since we are huge Jackie Chan fans in our house, we were thrilled to be able to review this movie on DVD.

I watched this DVD with my 6yr old son, but not with his younger brother and sister, who cannot discern the difference between what is acting and what is real. As much as I enjoy Jackie Chan's movies, the martial arts portions of this movie was a huge concern to me when it came to how realistic it would appear to a child. Although the fight scenes would seem realistic to a child, it had a comedic style rather than a fight-to-the-death feel. Also, the villains of the film were not frightening at all.

Chan's character (Bob Ho) is the Clark Kent of spies. Adding George Lopez and Billy Ray Cyrus to the mix, pretty much guarantees a fun movie for kids. Although my son loved this movie, there was something that seemed to be created more for the adults. This was the montage in the beginning featuring Bob in recreations of famous scenes from past spy and action films. It was highly unlikely that a younger child would recognize any of the films represented.

Beyond all the cool fight scenes and Jackie Chan's physical feats, there was ultimately a lesson to be learned in the end, which was that true family does not have to be blood-related. This film offers opportunities for you to talk to your child about different types of non-traditional families. It would also be a great movie for children belonging to such families to watch.

Like me, one of my 6yr old's favorite parts of this DVD is the outtakes at the end, which is an expected feature for all Jackie Chan films. As for the film, he really laughed the hardest during the scenes where the children fight to defend themselves and their home against the bad guys. Although Bob is no James Bond, he did have some neat spy gadgets that very much impressed my son.

You can purchase The Spy Next Door on DVD, a Blu-ray/DVD combo, or digital download at the Lionsgate Shop, Amazon.com, and other major movie retailers.

Thank you to Lionsgate for sending us a sample DVD free of charge to base this review upon.

Review: Night at the Museum - Battle of the Smithsonian (2-Disc DVD Gift Set)

Earlier this month, this Night at the Museum Holiday Gift Set hit store shelves. The double DVD pack includes Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian and a bonus Monkey Mischief DVD.

With such big names in comedic acting, such as Ben Stiller, Robin Williams, Hank Azaria, and Owen Wilson, it is difficult to resist watching this movie just out of curiosity. For someone like me who had not seen the first Night at the Museum film, I did not have a true sense of the bond between Larry Daley (Stiller's character) and the museum exhibits until well into the movie. So I would recommend renting the first movie prior to watching this one.

Although I've found other films that were rated PG to be suitable for our nearly 6yr old son, I did not find this one to be. There was nothing inappropriate about the film, but the sense of danger with live actors seemed to be too much for our son. If this same storyline was depicted with animated characters, this would not have been a problem. So my husband and I stopped the movie and ended up watching it by ourselves later on.

Although this movie had some corny parts, both my husband and I found it to be lots of fun. I have to say that your level of enjoyment of this film is directly related to your knowledge of history and pop culture. There were many great punchlines, but if you do not understand the references, then you may not see the humor behind them.

If you have older children, this movie is a great opportunity to teach them a little bit about some of the greatest historical and pop culture figures of our time. Some of the well-known historical figures included Amelia Earhart, Teddy Roosevelt, Al Capone, Attila the Hun, Ivan the Terrible, Napoleon, General Custard, Albert Einstein and Abraham Lincoln. The many pop culture references included the Rubik's Cube, Darth Vader and Jedi mind tricks, Bobblehead dolls, the film 300, and even Oscar the Grouch.

The bonus DVD Monkey Mischief is a fun DVD for monkey-lovers. I had thought it might be a film short or never before seen footage from the feature film, but rather it was different segments showing the monkeys who starred in both Night at the Museum movies during filming and their daily lives. It was cute, but I don't think it is worth paying the extra money for unless you are a huge fan of monkeys.

Currently, you can find Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (Two-Disc Monkey Mischief Pack) on Amazon.com and other major retailers of popular DVDs.

Thank you to Click-Communications for providing a screening copy of this DVD gift set.

Reliable When It Comes to Being Unreliable

On the episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine titled "Unreliable", Christine proved to her best friend Barb once again what a flaky friend she is. I'm sure we've all had at least one friend like that during our lifetime. Luckily, I don't have any friends like that currently, but I did during my more carefree days during high school.

This friend was almost always late, whether I was meeting her somewhere or picking her up at her house. It was pretty much a guarantee that when I showed up at her door to pick her up that she still was not dressed to go out and her hair was still wet because she had just gotten out of the shower. Fortunately, I never had to depend on her to keep me from being deported as Barb had depended on Christine. The funny thing was that my friend would have denied her chronic tardiness just as Christine was utterly shocked that Barb would insinuate that she was an unreliable friend.

On a serious note, as a busy wife and mom of 3 young children, I would not have much room in my life for an unreliable friend. I need to surround myself with people I can depend on and people who respect other people's time.

How about you? Do you have a friend that constantly flakes on you?

I have been hired by Warner Bros WB Word division to raise awareness for The New Adventures of Old Christine on CBS.
