Reliable When It Comes to Being Unreliable

On the episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine titled "Unreliable", Christine proved to her best friend Barb once again what a flaky friend she is. I'm sure we've all had at least one friend like that during our lifetime. Luckily, I don't have any friends like that currently, but I did during my more carefree days during high school.

This friend was almost always late, whether I was meeting her somewhere or picking her up at her house. It was pretty much a guarantee that when I showed up at her door to pick her up that she still was not dressed to go out and her hair was still wet because she had just gotten out of the shower. Fortunately, I never had to depend on her to keep me from being deported as Barb had depended on Christine. The funny thing was that my friend would have denied her chronic tardiness just as Christine was utterly shocked that Barb would insinuate that she was an unreliable friend.

On a serious note, as a busy wife and mom of 3 young children, I would not have much room in my life for an unreliable friend. I need to surround myself with people I can depend on and people who respect other people's time.

How about you? Do you have a friend that constantly flakes on you?

A Mother Must Protect Her Young

On the upcoming episode of The New Adventures of Old Christine, Julia Louis-Dreyfus's character (Old Christine) attempts to bribe a girl into keeping her date for the school dance with her son Ritchie. I have to say, as a mother, that resorting to bribery does not seem too far out there when it comes to protecting your child.

I know that my nearly 6 year old son probably does not remember this, but when he was smaller, these older kids tried to bully him at the playspace in the mall. They told him that he was not allowed on the a particular play structure. Having overheard this, I went over to my son, picked him up and put him on the structure. Then a stared at the bully daring him to say something else.

I'm sure as my son gets older, we will be adding more to the list of things I would do to protect him and bribery could very well be one of them. After all, a mother must protect her young, right?

You can catch The New Adventures of Old Christine on CBS Wednesdays at 8pm EST or anytime on CBS.com .

Fatherly Advice

Even though Hank Pryor (Kelsey Grammer's character on the ABC sitcom Hank) has not historically been a hands-on dad, you have to commend him for making an effort. He could actually take some lessons from my husband, who is an involved dad, about how to relate to his children. After all, treating his family like employees of a corporation, however valued, is just not working out for Hank.

Some of the best advice my husband has ever given our oldest son is that making mistakes is expected, but how one handles the results of those mistakes is what's important. He encouraged my son to be honest about his mistakes and to trust that it is always the right thing to come to us with the truth. Another difference between Hank and my husband is that my husband would more likely quote Yoda than he would a dead president while giving advice to our children.

I am curious to watch the "Hanksgiving" episode scheduled to air Wednesday night at 8pm EST on ABC. This is the episode when we get to meet Hank's mother-in-law. If you've missed the first few episodes of the first season of Hank, you can watch the full episodes on ABC.com .
