Brocade of Red

This ribbon came off gift wrapped item I had ordered from Novica, which is a site that sells all fair trade gifts. This ribbon stood out to me because the rest of the wrapping was so primitive. The paper looked like it was homemade, as did the cardboard used to protect the item. Then here we have this elaborate burgundy ribbon with gold shimmering embroidery. It just did seem to mesh with the rest of the other wrapping materials.

Giveaway & Review: Novica Fair Trade Gifts ($50 GC) [CLOSED]

If you are passionate about seeking out unique gifts to give to your friends, family, and co-workers, then you will love Novica, a site that offers fair trade gifts in association with National Geographic. Novica offers a vast assortment of handcrafted items from eight regions around the globe. Whether you are looking for green gifts, art, jewelry, or something else, chances are that Novica has something fit for the occasion.

I was fortunate enough to be able to select the items to be reviewed in this article. I was honestly surprised at the range of items offered by Novica. It took me a long time to narrow down my choices. The first item I chose was a set of 6 Crimson Crocus Wood Coasters, an item I thought would be perfect for the home or the office. In fact, Novica carries over 60 styles of coasters. These would make perfect fair trade corporate gifts for companies who want to offer something more meaningful than a token gift bearing the company logo.

I was extremely impressed by the presentation of these coasters. This particular item came with free gift wrapping. The coasters came carefully protected and gift wrapped in such a way that was very personal and charming.

These coasters were crafted by an artisan from Rajasthan named Kailash Chand. Although the design on each coaster is the same, you can tell they have been carefully hand painted because no two are exactly alike.

The other item I selected to review was this Crimson Reality Leather Bracelet. This particular item came with a free fabric gift box. Again, I was impressed by the presentation.

This high quality bracelet was crafted by a jewelry and clothing designer from Bali named Tomomi Takahashi. Her products include relaxed yoga-style clothing, leather bracelets, belts, and jute handbags.

Each Novica item was accompanied by a handwritten postcard relevant to the part of the world where the artisan is located. Also included was an embossed card containing the individual artisan's story. It is clear that Novica goes above and beyond to promote these artisans and to help them make a living at creating these works of art. After experiencing Novica products first hand, I think Novica.com should be at the top of your list of sites to visit, whether you are searching for the perfect birthday gift, wedding present, or corporate gifts.

For a limited time, first time customers can received $10 off their purchase of $40 or more when they use Code: NOVICA243 at checkout.

Thank you to Novica for providing us with two review products free of charge to base this review upon.

Review: "Guinness World Records 2010" The Book of the Decade

I recently had the pleasure of introducing the wonderful world of Guinness World Records to our kindergartner. He just turned 6 and is at the perfect age where he can understand the magnitude of some of these world records enough to be extremely impressed by them.

The layout of each page is categorized, so that the information is presented in an organized fashion, but also is visually dynamic at the same time. Every page is packed with images. In fact, there is so much information to take in on each page, my son and I look through about a dozen pages at a time. We have still yet to look through the entire book.

Although my son is a beginner reader, he can understand much of this book independently because of the many images. It is clear to him when the record involves something being the largest in the world. He has also come to recognize the words "actual size" which appear on several images in this book.

So far, I think my son is most impressed by the tallest man in the world. He was in awe when I explained that this man was almost 3 feet taller than his own father, whom he thinks is extremely tall at 6ft. He even went as far as questioning whether the things I showed him in this book were fictional and staged. I assured him that they were not and he was again in awe.

To learn more about the current Guinness World Records and about how to set a new record, visit GuinnessWorldRecords.com . You should be able to find the Guinness World Records 2010 book at your local bookstores and online at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble, and Borders. To keep up with the latest Guinness news, you can follow Guinness World Records on Twitter.

Thank you to Guinness World Records for sending us a book on which to base this review.

The Most Surprising Gift I've Ever Received

Target and Twitter Moms have posed the question, "What was the most surprising gift you've ever received? Well, I did not have to think too hard to answer this question. It was a gift I received for my birthday from my husband, whom I had been dating for approximately one year at the time. It was such a huge surprise because it was something that would never have crossed my mind for me to even get for myself.

About 13 years ago, Todd surprised me with a trip to the Bahamas for my birthday. We lived together at the time, so it was pretty amazing that he could make all the plans and even arranged time off from work for me without my suspecting a thing.

This was a cherished gift, more than I even realized at the time. That trip to the Bahamas was the only real vacation we've ever taken aside from a weekend away in New Hampshire for our honeymoon. It was also the last carefree thing we did. Since then we began focusing on saving for our wedding, concentrating on starting and raising a family, and then on purchasing our first home. Perhaps we'll have the chance to revisit that vacation spot again someday . . . when all three children have finished graduate school and have moved out of the nest permanently. The oldest is in kindergarten now, so we have a bit of a wait.

If you'd like to play along, visit Twitter Moms to find out how you can enter to win one of ten $100 Target gift cards. Hurry, this contest closes on December 27th, 2009.

Giveaway: Gifts Galore at BJ's Wholesale Club For Them and For You [CLOSED]

Today, we made our weekly stop into BJ's to pick up milk, diapers, wipes, and a few other things. Since it is nearly Christmas, there were deals on gifts everywhere. It was really hard to resist looking around, so I sent my husband along with the shopping list, so that I could browse.

If you are a last minute shopper, BJ's Wholesale Club is the place to go. They really do sell almost everything from gourmet gift baskets to Mr Coffee coffee makers . . . from netbooks to Coach bags . . . from toys to Bose speakers. The best part was that, although the store was busy, there were enough lanes open that there were no more than two people or so in each line at checkout.

After I walked by the designer bags a few times, I forced myself to move on. Here are some of the items I saw that I found to be very tempting . . .
  • Columbia front-zip fleece jacket for women under $30
  • 3 handset V-Tech phone system for under $60
  • a mini R/C car marked down to under $10 (Bought it!)
  • children's recliners for under $60
  • portable hard drive for about $50
  • pajamas w/matching fleece robes for boys & girls for under $13 (Bought it!)
  • 3 or 4 different styles of Vera Bradley bags
  • ultra plush body pillows for under $13 (Bought it!)
  • Match holiday dresses for girls and their dolls for under $15

If you don't work well under pressure and cannot decide on which bargains to buy, then you can always pick up a few BJ's gift cards. Then the recipient would be able to choose their own deal to take advantage of after Christmas. The only thing better than before Christmas deals is the after Christmas bargains.

To keep up with the latest deals, visit BJ's Wholesale Club on Facebook.

Thank you to BJ's Wholesale Club for providing a gift card for this contest and for sending me a gift card as a thank you for participating in this campaign.

What you can win:
One lucky reader will receive a $25 gift card to BJ's Wholesale Club.

My Favorite 10 Products Reviewed in 2009

My family and I have reviewed many products throughout 2009. I thought it would be fun to highlight our favorite ten products of the year and it would be nice to give these companies some recognition for a job well done.

I did not receive compensation of any kind to choose one product over another. These choices are based on my own and my family's personal experiences with these products. I discussed this list with my husband and children and we collectively came up with these ten products, leading with our most favorite.
