Our LISTERINE "Healthy Habits for a Lifetime" Oral Care Challenge Started Today!

My family has been invited to take the Listerine Healthy Habits for a Lifetime Oral Care Challenge and I gladly accepted because we are not doing so well in the healthy habits department when it comes to our teeth and gums.  My husband and I both need dental work, but just cannot afford to have it done all at once.  We definitely do not want our children (currently 8, 5, and 5) going down this road, but when it is a struggle just to make sure they are brushing at least twice a day, doing more seems nearly impossible.  After hearing what dental experts had to say about oral care in young children, I realized that we must have our children floss, brush, and rinse twice a day every day.  And as the adults, my husband and I must lead by example.  That means no more working until 1am and then just throwing myself into bed without brushing because I am too tired!

In this challenge, my family has agreed to floss, brush, and rinse with mouthwash at least twice a day for 3 weeks.  Here are some dental facts I had learned that convinced me more than ever that succeeding at this challenge is a necessity:
  • Brushing alone only cleans 25% of the germs in your mouth.
  • 75% of adults suffer from some form of gum disease
  • 50% of children have their first cavity or filling between the ages of 5 and 9 years old.
  • It is recommended that a child should visit a pediatric dentist as soon as his or her first tooth erupts.
  • It is recommended that parents begin to floss their children's teeth as soon as there are two adjacent teeth.
Since it is National Children's Dental Health Month it seemed like the perfect time to take on this challenge.  The first day of our challenge started off pretty well.  The children were happy to be able to decide on their own weapons of choice, including licensed character Reach Kids toothbrushes, Plackers Kids Flossers, and Listerine Smart Rinse mouthwash in a variety of flavors and characters.  We had the children test out the flossers and were pleasantly surprised that we did not receive any complaints or resistance.  Then we had the children brush with their new toothbrushes and children's fluoride toothpaste.  Finally, we had each child try to  rinse with mouthwash for as close to a minute as they could and then spit it out.

It will take a few days for the children to become accustomed to the floss and the mouthwash, but based on how well things went this morning, I am extremely optimistic that we will successfully complete this challenge.  As a reward, if all 5 of us complete this challenge, we will take the children to a family movie of their choice.

Over the next 3 weeks, look for updates on how our family is doing in the Listerine Healthy Habits for a Lifetime Oral Care Challenge on Facebook and Twitter.  Once our 3 weeks is over, I will update our 3G2S readers about what has worked for us and what has not.  For tips about how to improve oral care habits for your family, visit Walmart.com, who is doing their part by selling Listerine and Reach products at very affordable prices.

I received products and compensation from Johnson & Johnson and The Motherhood
as part of my participation in the Oral Care Challenge. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this post are my own.

Children's Dental Health Month: Twooth Timer Giveaway [CLOSED]

For our last dental product feature during National Children's Dental Health Month, I would like to present an affordable solution to a very serious problem. That problem is getting our 6yr old son to brush his teeth thoroughly. He is what you call a "speed brusher". That is why I was so happy to find the Twooth Timer. This award-winning toothbrushing timer is shaped like a real tooth and is much more fun for children than a boring kitchen timer.

The Twooth Timer is extremely user-friendly for children. It requires no batteries . . . just a twist. Simply turn the top of the timer so that the arrow points to the 1 or the 2, which indicates the minutes. This timer works similarly to a wind-up toy. Right before it reaches the end, a buzzer goes off.

There are two ways to use the Twooth Timer. You can either set the timer to two minutes and brush during the entire two minutes. The other way is to set the timer for one minute for brushing the top teeth and another minute for the bottom. We opt for setting the time for two minutes all at once because it is easier for my 6yr old to manage on his own.

Because the Twooth Timer is somewhat of a novelty item, my son uses it without being asked. It has worked like a charm to get him to brush much longer than he has been in the habit of doing. Now if I can only find a gadget that will get him to rinse his mouth better.

You can order the Twooth Timer by phone for just $9.99 plus shipping directly from The Twooth Timer Company. You can also check your local dentist office and select retail stores for this product. There is a Twooth Timer store finder to help you find a retailer near you.

Thank you to The Twooth Timer Company for sending us a sample timer free of charge to base this review upon and also for sending another timer to the winner of this contest.

One lucky reader will receive a Twooth Timer of their very own.

Children's Dental Health Month: A&H Spinbrush for Kids Giveaway [CLOSED]

Since our 6yr old got his first battery-powered toothbrush, I knew it was the solution to helping him brush better. He is a lazy brusher when it comes to his teeth, so having the toothbrush do most of the work was a great idea.

Now that our twins are 3 years old, I wondered if they could benefit from an electric toothbrush like their big brother. They have brushing their front teeth down pat, but all the other teeth get neglected. Since Spinbrush for Kids battery-powered toothbrushes are recommended for children ages 3 and up (with parental supervision), I thought we should give them a try.

We received three Spinbrushes to try out . . . a skateboard with flames for our kindergartner, a butterfly for our daughter, and an astronaut (he thinks it's a robot) for her twin brother. We also received some Orajel training toothpaste that is fluoride-free to help the twins practice brushing with toothpaste while learning not to swallow it.

Our main concern about introducing the battery-powered toothbrushes to our preschoolers was that they might not care for the noise and the vibration. My husband and I were just hoping that they would want to use them in order to be like their big brother who uses one everyday. Our prediction was correct in our daughter's case. She didn't even want to hold the Spinbrush while it was turned on. Her twin brother, however, was much more open to the idea. He even tried to brush on his own. He did well with the front, but needed help brushing the back teeth.

Our kindergartner tried to show his younger siblings how it was done. The smaller heads on these Spinbrushes were the perfect fit for him. It would be wonderful if they made replacement heads for these toothbrushes.

I think these toothbrushes would be great for children ages 4 to 8. A 3yr old might be able to use it, but an adult would have to turn it on for the child because the switch on some of them are a little stubborn. I like that the Spinbrush stays on with a push of a switch so that there is no need to hold a button down during brushing.

As for the training toothpaste, the twins need a lot more practice with it since they can barely lean into the bathroom sink even while standing on a stepstool. We already know the Orajel training toothpaste is a great product because we used it for our son until his 6th birthday when he was able to switch to toothpaste containing fluoride.

You should be able to find Arm & Hammer Spinbrushes for both adults and children along with Orajel training toothpaste wherever dental care products are sold, including your local pharmacy and grocery store.

Thank you to Arm & Hammer and Orajel for sending us sample SpinBrushes, training toothpaste, and other Orajel products to try and also for providing a SpinBrush for our contest prize.

Children's Dental Health Month: Custom Tooth Fairy Pillow

In honor of National Children's Dental Health Month, I've decided to feature a different dental-related product each week. My oldest son just turned 6, so he is approaching the time when he could potentially lose his first tooth. Oh the pressure! Trying to keep the magic of Santa and the Easter Bunny alive is hard enough. Now I have to be the tooth fairy too?

Since I am not the most stealthy person, I decided that a tooth fairy pillow was definitely needed. They usually have a tiny pocket in the back where your child can put his or her lost tooth. This pocket is easily accessible so the tooth fairy can retrieve the tooth and leave a little money in its place without waking the child. I have to say that there are a lot of choices out there for tooth fairy pillows and a lot of them can be personalized with your child's name. The CurlyQ Cuties Custom Fairy-Tooth is the only one I've come across that allows your child to customize the look of the pillow themselves.

The whole experience of creating his own pillow was almost as important as having the actual pillow delivered to our front door. On the CurlyQ Cuties website, my son could choose the color of his tooth, the eye shape, eye color, and mouth shape. He tried all different combinations and could not make up his mind. Then he decided he really liked the green one shown at the top of the CurlyQ Cuties site, except he changed the eye shape to make it his own. I also paid the additional $5 to have my son's name embroidered on the back. He was able to choose the font and thread color himself. The Fairy-Tooth itself is $15, so mine would cost $20 to order with the embroidery (not including shipping charges).

I was extremely happy with the final product, as was my son. The 7" x 6" tooth looked exactly like the online drawing of the pillow he had personally designed. The anti-pill fleece and the downy filling made this pillow extremely huggable. My son even slept with his Fairy-Tooth the first night. It's also nice to know that if I had to, the pillow is machine washable on the delicate cycle and can be air dried. My son has gotten sick in his bed more than anywhere else and we've had to get rid of our share of plush toys. I hope that this special Fairy-Tooth will last many years.

CurlyQ Cuties' product selection is not limited to Custom Fairy-Teeth. This company also offers a variety of 12" custom monsters. I think I might have my 6yr old design one monster each for his younger twin brother and sister for Christmas this year. It would mean a lot more than just having him pick out a toy at the store.
