4 Tips for Getting Ready for Back-to-School On a Budget & How to Help Others Get Ready Too!

I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Boys & Girls Clubs of America. I received a promotional item as a thank you for participating.

Last year, was the first year I had children in 3 different classrooms because our twins were in the same classroom during preschool.  I have to say that I was a little bit flustered because I had a different list of school supplies and wishlist items from each class.  I could not believe how much I spent after all was said and done.  This year, I feel like an old pro compared to last year.  I had everything done for back-to-school 3 weeks early and now I can enjoy the last few weeks of summer vacation with my children.

If you are a little stressed out about the amount of items on your child's back-to-school list or about the total cost of those items, here are few tips on how to cut down on spending . . .

1.  Shop for clothing, outerwear, and shoes in advance.  Since I shop for children's clothes in the next size up during end-of-the-season sales, I usually have a good supply of fall clothes for each of my 3 children.  Then I just need to take advantage of the back-to-school sales to fill in the holes in each child's wardrobe.  If you are buying boots in advance, then I would buy 2 sizes up so that they will last from fall through the end of the winter.

2.  Reuse last year's school supplies.  Even though it seems nice to have everything brand new for the start of the school year, there is no reason why your child cannot use last year's backpack, lunch box, pencil box, pencils, pens, highlighters, crayons, markers, poly folders, etc . . . again if they are still in good condition.  On the same note, a younger sibling can use an older sibling's previous backpack or lunch box that may be too childish looking now that he or she is older.  The cost of school supplies can really add up, especially when you have more than one child.

3.  Buy school supplies in bulk or multi-packs.  You can buy school supplies at office supply stores or at warehouse stores in large quantities and then split them up between your children.  Purchasing this way is usually a better value.  You can also do the same thing for classroom donations.  If you only have one child, you can put the excess supplies away for next year.  Examples of things you can buy in bulk are yellow pencils, ballpoint pens, glue sticks, 2-pocket portfolios, safety scissors, disinfecting wipes, paper towels, boxed facial tissue, and hand sanitizer.

4.  Invest in reusable bottles and food containers.  You probably already know that the cost of bottled water, aluminum foil, and sandwich bags can add up quickly.  Buying reusable water bottles, snack containers, and sandwich or lunch containers will help to save money in the long run (and it's better for the environment).  If you are good about washing these items daily, then you will only need two sets . . . one to use and one as a spare in case your child forgets their lunch box at school.  Just be sure to label all your child's bottles and food containers so that they do not accidentally go missing.

Unfortunately for some families, doing the above does not make getting ready for back-to-school affordable enough.  I know such families exist in my children's grade school community and they likely do in yours as well.  That is why I love the idea of an online school supply drive!

Once again this year, the Boys and Girls Club of America (BGCA) has teamed up with Disney to run an online supply drive.  To participate, it costs you nothing but your time.  All you need to do is play the Supply Drive Game, a multiple choice trivia type game.  For every 5 questions you answer correctly, a school supply kit will be donated to a child in need who is a member of the BGCA.  It literally took me less than 2 minutes to answer 5 questions correctly, so if you devote 20 minutes of your time to playing this game, 10 club kids could each receive a school supply kit because you cared.

Boys and Girls Club of America (BGCA), Disney, and JCPenney Team Up for a Better Back-to-School for Our Children

Last night I was able to go out and buy the last of the items on my children's school supplies lists given to us by their soon-to-be teachers.  If you can believe it, I had 5 lists between our 3 children.  Some of the things on the lists were just common sense items, like a backpack for instance.  Other things were very specific, like liquid hand soap in a pump and large glue sticks.  It always amazes me how one class' list can differ so much from another's.  Still, I don't mind picking up these things throughout the summer, if it means that the teachers will need to spend less of their own money to have the basics for their classrooms.

As I was packing the school supplies up into separate bags for each classroom, I started to think about how some families cannot even afford to buy their children backpacks or lunchboxes, never mind all these other supplies in front of me, like antibacterial wipes and gallon-size food storage bags, none of which are inexpensive.  That is why I think the combined effort between Boys and Girls Club of America, Disney, and JCPenney to make going back-to-school a better experience for less fortunate children is such an admirable one.  How can you help?  Here are two easy ways . . .

1.  Visit bgca.org and play the Tools For Back to School "Supply Drive Game" sponsored by Disney.  All you need to do is answer 5 trivia questions correctly about BGCA and school supplies will be donated to a child member of the club.  The questions are multiple choice and, if you get one wrong, it let's you try that question again.  This costs you nothing, but 2 or 3 minutes of your time.

(Click any image to enlarge)

2.  When you shop at your local JCPenney during the month of August, support JCP Cares in benefiting the Boys and Girls Club of America by rounding up your purchase.  What does that mean?  All you need to do is round up your purchase total to the nearest dollar and the difference will be donated to BGCA.  For example, if your purchase total comes to $39.50, when you opt to round up, your new total will be $40.00 and $.50 will be donated towards this worthy cause.  You may think a little change does not sound like much, but when it is combined with a little change from thousands of shoppers, it can add up to quite a lot.

You can learn more about both these initiatives by visiting bcga.org.  While you're there, remember to checkout the useful back-to-school tips for parents and students, such as these tips about how to make homework time a more organized, positive, stress-free experience for both you and your child . . .

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of Boys and Girls Club. I received a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Back-to-School Must-Haves: Label-Land Bag Tags & Labels

For us, school begins again at the end of August.  Although I have most of the supplies on the lists the teachers had sent home in the Spring, I still feel like I have lots more to do.  One thing I can check off my list is labeling everything for our three children.  It is a requirement to label pretty much anything that goes into school.

For the Fall 2012 school year, Label-Land sent us 2 personalized metal bag tags for each child and 40 classic white waterproof labels per child.  The bag tags are customized on the front with the design and text of your choice and have the Label-Land logo on the back.  Our children were each able to choose the design they liked best.  Our daughter chose the Cupcakes design and both our boys chose the Green Camouflage.  All the bag tags come with a ball chain and easily attach just about anywhere.  For our 5-1/2 year old twins, I hung the bag tags where they would be easily visible.  For our 8-1/2 year old son, I attached it where it was detectable, but could be tucked inside the front pocket of his backpack.  These metal tags seem to be lightweight, but strong, and should hold up well to everyday normal use for more than one school year.  The Label-Land bag tags are priced at 2 for $12.99, 5 for $23.99, and 10 for $39.99.

(Click any photo to enlarge)

Here are some examples of what I used the different sizes of white waterproof stickers to label.  They worked well both on the vinyl interior of my older son's lunchbox and on the textured canvas-like exterior of the twins' lunchboxes.

I also used these labels inside my children's shoes, on their poly folders, and on their reusable water bottles.

I was pleased that these waterproof labels stayed put even after multiple washes in the dishwasher.  These labels are also microwave-safe, but I have not tested them out in the microwave.  The 40 assorted size labels are priced at $14.99 for 1 sheet, $24.99 for 2 sheets, $33.99 for 3 sheets, and $39.99 for 4 sheets.

In addition to personalized bag tags and classic white waterproof labels, Label-Land also offers iron-on clothing labels and two different sizes of colorfully designed waterproof labels.  You can view all their products by visiting www.label-land.com.  The bag tags and stickers would be perfect for use at school, at summer camp, and for giving as stocking stuffers.

Thank you to Label-Land for providing complimentary product samples for us to base this review upon.

Back-to-School: Office Depot Will Donate 400,000 Sackpacks to Students in 2012

Every child needs a school bag to carry their books home from school, right?  Well, you may be surprised to learn that there are children in the U.S. who carry their lunches and books to school in plastic grocery bags because their families just cannot afford to or have simply neglected to buy backpacks for them.  In fact, there are enough children in this situation for the Office Depot Foundation to donate approximately 400,000 brand new sackpacks towards this cause in 2012 alone and an astounding 2.5 million backpacks over the first 11 years of their National Backpack Program.

The backpack program is only one of several socially responsible philanthropic programs organized or supported by the Office Depot Foundation, including efforts towards disaster relief and recovery.  You can learn about these efforts, how to get involved by volunteering, and how to make a charitable donation by visiting www.OfficeDepotFoundation.org and Office Depot Foundation on Facebook.

As always, I am proud to be a customer of a retailer that makes such a huge effort to give back and whose efforts benefit children.  Office Depot will definitely be one of my stops for back-to-school shopping this year.

Back To School 2010: New Zebra Pens & Mechanical Pencils

Summer is not even half over, but the time to think about back-to-school supplies is nearing quickly. Zebra Pen, a popular brand for ball point pens, gel pens, mechanical pencils, highlighters, and more, has introduced some great new writing tools for students of all ages. These new products are not just for students, but for teachers, professors, and busy moms and dads.

The new Zebra Regal Roller Pens are perfect for the serious high school student, college scholars, and teachers. They are available in 4-packs with either arrow tips or needle tips. I personally prefer arrow tip pens. I must press down too hard when I write, so I usually wear out needle tip pens after awhile. The 4-packs come in an assortment of black, blue, red, and green fade and water-resistant ink.

For myself, I like retractable pens because I am always in a rush and jotting things down in my Day Runner throughout the day. These new Z-Grip Daisies Ball Pens add some flourish to the classic ball point pen and are right up my alley. These pens would be fun for grade school children, tweens, . . . all the way up to adults. I will be taking these to BlogHer 2010 with me. The 5-pack of Z-Grip Daisies come in pink, orange, blue, green, and purple. And, yes, the ink colors do match the grip colors. Since many teachers do not accept colored inks on school work, I would have loved to have seen at least one black or dark blue pen in the pack.

* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

The Cadoozles mechanical pencils are especially made for grade school and middle school students. The 10-pack comes in six different fun designs. More importantly, these mechanical pencils are topped with erasers and they are refillable. So many mechanical pencils out there are meant to be disposable and are not refillable. That seems like such a waste to me and is not so good for the environment. You can refill these pencils easily with 0.7mm lead by removing the erasers at the top.

My son is entering 1st grade this fall and his teacher will only allow yellow No. 2 pencils at school. I suppose it reduces the number of disputes between children that age when each child has similar supplies. At least Zebra pens and pencils will make homework more fun to do.

To view the full line of Zebra Pen products, visit ZebraPen.com . You can also find new products and promotions by visiting Zebra Pen on Facebook and by following ZebraPen on Twitter.

Thank you to Zebra Pen for sending us sample pens and pencils free of charge to base this review upon.

Giveaway & Review: 152ct "Label Daddy" Labels [CLOSED]

In Fall 2010, our twins will be starting preschool. Luckily, we already had one child go through preschool, so we know what to expect. One thing we hear again and again is "Label everything!" When I did not know better, I just took a Sharpie and wrote my son's name on everything. Now I do know better and use clothing labels and zipper tags.

Label Daddy was nice enough to send us some of their licensed Disney labels and zipper tags to try for ourselves. Our 6yr old son chose Disney Pixar Cars for his extra small clothing labels. These labels are so easy to apply. You just peel, stick, and press firmly. It is recommended to wait 24 hours before putting the piece of clothing through the wash. The label below has been machine washed and dried and still looks good as new. It shows no signs of peeling or fading.

For these particular Disney labels, you are able to choose the design, the personalization, and the font. The choices include most of the Disney favorites, including Mickey, Minnie, the Disney Princesses, Buzz Lightyear, Tinkerbell, Winnie the Pooh, Hannah Montana, and more.

There are so many items these extra small labels will be used on. Off the top of my head, I will be using them on all my son's coats and hoodies, inside his baseball caps, his winter gloves and hat, inside his shoes and snow boots, his swim trunks, and his nylon wallet.

The laminated zipper tags we received for the twins were also Disney-themed. Our 3yr old son is a huge fan of Mickey Mouse and his twin sister loves anything to do with princesses. The ordering process for the zipper tags is the same as for the labels.

I love that these tags have a lobster claw clasp. It made it so much easier to attach the tags than it would have been with jumprings. These tags will not only be used on the twins' backpacks, but also on their coats, zip-front sweatshirts, zip-up snow boots, and zip-close pencil cases.

I am extremely happy with my Label Daddy products. The only thing I would have possibly changed is to have my daughter's last initial put on a second line since her name is so long. That would have made the tag slightly easier to read.

Visit LabelDaddy.com to view their full line of labels, which are not just limited to clothing labels, but also includes all-purpose labels, allergy labels, address labels, photo stickers, luggage tags, and much more.

Thank you to Label Daddy for sending us sample labels and tags free of charge to base this review upon and for providing additional product for our contest prize.

Giveaway & Review: Name Bubbles Waterproof Labels [CLOSED]

TWINtuitive Product #21

I chose these waterproof name labels from Name Bubbles to feature as a "TWINtuitive Product" because it is important for twins, who are often forced to share almost everything, to have some things that are theirs alone. No matter what their age, each twin will be able to recognize which cup, toy, or pencil box is theirs just by looking at the Name Bubbles. If your child is too young to read their name, they will be able to recognize their personal icon you chose for him or her when ordering their personalized labels. These labels are also designed to help recognition through color coding.

Even though I blocked them out in my photos, you can put your child's full name on these labels. Each sampler sheet comes with 6 Waterproof Mini Bubbles, 6 Waterproof Bitty Bubbles, and a Pair of Bubble Toes. The Bubble Toes will come in handy this winter when our kindergartner needs to where his snow boots to school, but also carry his sneakers with him to change into in class. Our kindergartner's name is written on the inside of his winter coat with a Sharpie, but I will be sure to use the fabric label for his new coat when Spring rolls around.

What I did have an immediate need for was a label that was dishwasher safe to put on the new reusable snack container I just bought for our son. We ran this lid through a full cycle in the dishwasher, which included drying and it came out exactly as it went in. There were no signs of bubbles forming or edges pulling away from the surface of the lid. Nor were there any indications that the design on the label was fading. I was extremely pleased with the results.

I think these Name Bubbles labels would make great stocking stuffers and birthday party favors. All children love stickers and ones with their names on them are even cooler. They don't need to know that these stickers serve a practical purpose as well.

To view the full line of Name Bubbles dishwasher safe and laundry safe waterproof labels, visit NameBubbles.com .

Thank you to Name Bubbles for providing three different sample packs for this review and a holiday pack of labels for our contest prize.

What you can win:
One lucky reader will receive a Holiday Pack of Name Bubble labels, which consists of 6 sheets of 14 labels. That's 84 labels total. (The winner may choose up to 6 names and designs for this prize pack.)

Peter Walsh Shares Tips on Getting Organized for Back-to-School

In August of 2008, Office Max brought to us an informative blogcast featuring Peter Walsh, an organization expert you may recognize from TLC's Clean Sweep and the Oprah Show. The topic of the blogcast was how to get your child and your child's environment organized in order to maximize his or her performance upon starting school again this fall.

The key points of the blogcast were as follows:

TIPS FOR HOME
1) Find the Vision you have for a Space
2) Make Organization a Family Value
3) Use the Right Tools for Great Organization

TIPS FOR ORGANIZING YOUR CHILD
1) Show that you Value Organization
2) Establish Clear Limits and Routines
3) Always ‘Finish the Cycle’ (Complete a Task)

TIPS FOR THE CLASSROOM
1) Establish Clear Routines
2) Involve Kids with Classroom Organization
3) Use Words, Pictures and Color to help Organize

Since my son is entering kindergarten this fall, he will not be carrying much in his backpack and will not have a desk or a locker of his own. The part of the blogcast which applies to us the most is organizing at home. My son's desk has become a catchall in recent months, so in the next two weeks before he starts school, we will need to clear off his desk and reorganize his closet. We need to make a space to store the work he brings home from school that he wishes to keep. The mountain of papers and projects he had brought home from preschool was a huge problem for us. We most certainly need to resolve this storage issue before school starts.

Some of the top tips I heard from Peter regarding preparing for back-to-school were . . .

  • Take an inventory of what school supplies you have before you run out to purchase more.
  • Envision what you would like your organized space to be like before your purchase any organizational products, rather than buying a whole system of products and then attempting to make it fit your space and your needs.
  • Make organization a part of everyday life for your family. (In my case, I am the only person in my household who makes a place for everything and then actually puts things back where they go.)
  • Use colors and pictures to help organize your child's space.
  • Finish what you start. (My husband is famous for cleaning something and then leaving the roll of paper towels and spray cleaner in a random place.)

Please take a minute to watch Peter Walsh's blogcast below. You will most certainly learn at least one new thing to help your child be more organized.

When you are out looking for all the items on your child's required school supplies list this summer, stop by Office Max to check out the "Schoolio Von Hoolio" back-to-school product line. This coordinating line is adorable and includes folders, notebooks, binders, report covers, note pads, pencils, clipboards, and more.

Thank you to Office Max for inviting us to take part in Peter Walsh's blogcast and for sending us samples from the new back-to-school line.
