Silly Monkey Stories: Such a Considerate Child

Last week, I had a very minor procedure done at the doctor's and was given an assortment of drugs for pain management.  Well, one or more of the drugs was making me nauseous and I was for at least a day and a half.  If you are a parent, then you know very well that it really does not matter how you are feeling.  Your children, especially young ones, will carry on like they do everyday.

Our son Luke, who will be turning 5 soon, is rarely happy with what we decide to serve him for lunch or dinner.  It could be something that the actually likes to eat, but if he doesn't feel like having it that day, he will complain and complain about it.

So, even though I was laying on the futon like a lump because I was too nauseous to move, Luke was standing over me telling me how he did not want to eat soup and breadsticks.  After a few minutes, I just had to tell him that I was too sick at the moment to argue with him.  To this he answered . . .

"Okay, then how about I just argue with you the day after tomorrow?"

My Photos (W/E 8-6-11)

I had the opportunity to take some photos of our oldest son last week.  He turned 7-1/2 last month, is about to enter the 2nd grade, and just lost his first two teeth.  I use to photograph him almost daily.  I decided I needed to take more photos of him since he's growing up so quickly.

My Son Presented Me With Two Original Works of Art

If you've followed my Creating With Colors series, then you already know that our kindergartner loves to create art. He surprised me with these two pictures the other day.

The first one was of a rainbow and it put such a smile on my face. He didn't like that I said that it looked like there was a door that led under the rainbow though. I think he did an awesome job writing the to and the from all on his own. He is convinced that "f" is good enough without the "rom" after it. Sometimes you just can't argue with a 6yr old.

This next one is a portrait of me. I love this one because I am smiling in the picture and there are two hearts . . . one for my son and one for me. I am going to have him sign this one so I can keep it forever.

Fatherly Advice

Even though Hank Pryor (Kelsey Grammer's character on the ABC sitcom Hank) has not historically been a hands-on dad, you have to commend him for making an effort. He could actually take some lessons from my husband, who is an involved dad, about how to relate to his children. After all, treating his family like employees of a corporation, however valued, is just not working out for Hank.

Some of the best advice my husband has ever given our oldest son is that making mistakes is expected, but how one handles the results of those mistakes is what's important. He encouraged my son to be honest about his mistakes and to trust that it is always the right thing to come to us with the truth. Another difference between Hank and my husband is that my husband would more likely quote Yoda than he would a dead president while giving advice to our children.

I am curious to watch the "Hanksgiving" episode scheduled to air Wednesday night at 8pm EST on ABC. This is the episode when we get to meet Hank's mother-in-law. If you've missed the first few episodes of the first season of Hank, you can watch the full episodes on ABC.com .

I have been hired by Warner Bros to help raise awareness for Hank.
