Silly Monkey Stories: A Prize?

For quite some time now, our 4.5 year old daughter (and sometimes her twin brother too) has been regularly leaving the beginning sound off words when speaking.  If she had a British accent, she could easily be mistaken for Eliza Doolittle.  When I correct her, she acknowledges the error and repeats the word properly.  Still, there are some words that she always does this with and I am beginning to think that she will never grow out of it.

Here are some of the words she always mispronounces along with the translations . . . 


ahind = behind

Aprize! = Surprise!

acause = because

anola bar = granola bar

Silly Monkey Stories: Sizzly, I Can't Know . . .

It's been awhile since I've updated you on the twins' speech and vocabulary development. Makenzie is still quite far ahead of Luke as far as vocabulary and enunciation. Still they both make their share of silly errors that we cannot seem to break them out of no matter how many time we try to correct them. I really should remember to write them all down. I had to enlist my husband in helping me make a list.




Here are the ones we could recall . . .


LUKE: "I can't know." = I don't know.

MAKENZIE: "What time it is?" = What time is it?

LUKE: "Sizzly" = Seriously

LUKE: "Appletard" = Avatar (the Last Airbender)


Makenzie also randomly adds "ed" on the end of verbs to make them past tense. I know there are more, but that is all we could remember at the moment.

Silly Monkey Stories: Etymology for Toddlers Words

There are some words that Makenzie gets wrong, no matter how many times we correct her. I know in her head she is thinking, "I know I'm right. These silly grown-ups don't know what they're talking about."

One thing that has really stood out to me is that, instead of saying "hiccups", she says "Luke-ups". Now Luke is her twin brother. I need an etymologist to explain to me how the word "hiccups" evolved into "Luke-ups". Of course Makenzie refuses to listen to her father and I when we try to correct her.



Will this mystery ever be solved?

Silly Monkey Stories: Luke Want a Cracker?

There's no question that Luke is developing more slowly when it comes to speech compared to his twin sister. He is not yet speaking in complete sentences, but he can repeat almost everything. Here is a typical conversation with him . . .

My husband: Luke, do you have poopies?

Luke: Have poopies. (Nodding)

My husband: Lets get you all cleaned up.

Luke: All cleaned up. (Smiling)

My husband: There, doesn't that feel much better?

Luke: Feels much better. (Nodding)

Silly Monkey Stories: A Multilingual Monkey

Recently, all 3 kids have taken an interest in using our oversized bean bag chair as rough terrain for their monster trucks.


Everytime our 2.5yr old daughter Makenzie tries to say "monster trucks", it comes out sounding like "mazel tov", which means "congratulations" in Yiddish or Hebrew (depending on how you spell it).
