This is a Level 2 project which is slightly harder and requires cutting, sawing, drilling, and other things that require adult assistance. The instructions are simple enough and only should about an hour to assemble. Once assembled, this table is a perfect, mini-sized version of regular pool table and comes with all the items needed to play the game including chalk for the sticks and a brush for the felt table. Designed for 1 to 4 players ages 3 and older (because of choking risk with the “food” pieces), this game would be a fun gift for any child, but especially those who need to develop those skills. This game does require 2 “AA” batteries, so be sure to include them with your gift and it’s worth noting that the game needs a solid, stable surface in order to function.

These plush toys come with internal LED lights that are just bright enough to make the dark a little less scary.  The internal lights are also easy to turn on and off with a handy button and each one comes with a built-in 20 minute shut off timer, in order to avoid wasting batteries or burning out the bulbs while children are sleeping. In addition to the Glow Seal, Glow Pets are also available in a Bear, Zebra, Turtle, Unicorn, Pup, Penguin, and Snail.  This plush toy (approximately 15") would be the perfect gift for a child 3 years or older, who is afraid of the dark or just needs a little extra security during the night.

Timeless Toys for Children

This post has been brought to you by Jennifer Viloria.

Choosing toys for you children can seem a daunting task especially with the range of options on the market. Toys go in and out of fashion every year, but there are some staple toy and game designs that have stood the test of time. Let’s take a look at some of the toy classics that seem to stay at the top of the charts, year in and year out.

The world of Lego . . .

Lego has come a long way since the company was first created in 1932 in Denmark. The brightly colored interlocking bricks are a firm favorite with children of all ages. Lego sets inspire and encourage children to use their imagination, developing their artistic creativity.

There are literally thousands of different sets of Lego toys available with a variety of themes including robots, outer space, the Wild West, towns, and cities, but you can still purchase a basic set for under $20. The company has also branched out with its range of video games, which can be enjoyed by children of all ages and can be played by the entire family.

Board Games to keep everyone happy . . .

Board games have always been a great choice to help children engage with others, learn skills such as letter recognition and reading, as well as helping to improve manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination. One of the main attractions is that these games promote a fun way of interacting together as a family, no matter the age range.

The good news is that despite the apparent technological takeover in terms of mobile interactivity and video gaming, favorites like Monopoly, Scrabble, and Hungry Hungry Hippos are still up there as some of the most popular pastimes available for families. It’s not hard to see why: these games provide lasting entertainment, even as your family grows and changes, providing plenty of value for your money at the same time.

Pocket money toys . . .

All toy shops carry what is known as pocket money toys. These are individual toys or toys that are part of a collection; think magic kits, Barbie toys, sticker sets, painting packs, and Play-Doh.  The list is virtually endless. These toys are not only fun for kids to collect but are cheap enough to be bought with your child’s allowance, meaning kids learn the value of money and saving from an early age.

Sometimes even the simplest toys are the best way to challenge a child, feed their curiosity, and boost their practical and mental skills. From building blocks to prompt a toddler’s hand-eye coordination to the most complex doll houses and space stations to fire up the imagination, these timeless toys are much more than easy entertainment.

Silly Monkey Stories: A 4 Year Old's Use of Psychology

Our preschool-aged son Luke has made it a habit of hiding toys under his pillow at night.  We've found everything from action figures to a pair of 15" Star Wars Blaster Toy Guns under there!  I have no idea how he can sleep comfortably with hard plastic toys under his head.

Since summer began, Luke's big brother has been staying up way too late at night, which causes him to sleep far too late in the morning.  It really is a chore to wake him up.  One morning, not too long ago, I heard Luke attempting to do just that.  What I heard was . . .

"Jake!  Wake up Jake!!"

Then when Luke didn't receive any response from his big brother, he continued . . .

"Okay then.  I guess you don't want to play with these cool cars I have under my pillow!  I guess you don't want to play with these cool cars Jake."

I suppose he just used whatever reasoning that would have worked on himself.  In any case, he did not succeed in convincing his big brother to get out of bed.

Ruby Tuesday: Red Glider

On Mother's Day, we took this Playmobil glider to my sister's and brother-in-law's house to play with outside before dinner.   It was surprisingly durable.  We know this because it crashed into the trees and the side of the house several times.  It even landed in a patch of poison ivy and survived an extensive bath.

Silly Monkey Stories: Robots, DS Games, and Fruit Loops . . . Oh My!

For Chinese New Year, the children received quite a bit of lucky money.  That added onto their birthday money from January warranted a trip to the toy store.  That evening, we got home right around bedtime because we had dinner out and other errands to do aside from going to the toy store, so the children did not have time to play with their new toys that night.

The next morning immediately after breakfast, Luke wanted to open his new robot and Jake wanted to play his new Nintendo DS game.  Then Kenzie asked, "Can I play with my Fruit Loop?"

Here's a photo I came across of when she was just an amateur hula hooper . . .

Ruby Tuesday: Iron Man Racers

Just like his big brother before him, who was crazy about Speed Racer even though he was too young to see the movie in the theaters, our 4 year old son has an obsession with Iron Man.  Of course he is much too young to have seen the films Iron Man or Iron Man 2.  Still, he had an Iron Man-themed birthday cake and one of his favorite gifts is his new Iron Man Quantum Quad Racer, given to him by his favorite Aunt and Uncle.  We've even caught him sleeping with this toy under his pillow at night.  (Yes, I wondered how uncomfortable he must have been, too.)

Top 18 Products of 2010

Since 2010 has come to an end, it only seems fitting that my family shares with you which products were their favorites from the many we had the privilege to review last year.  There were so many impressive products that we could have easily made a top 40 list.

1.  Guidecraft All In One Play Kitchen

2.  Melissa & Doug Pretend Play Workbench

3.  Black & Decker Wall-Mounted Paper Shredder and Message Center

4.  1154 LILL Studio Custom Handbag

5.  Slix Closer Boxer Briefs

Although I have received complimentary product samples from either the brands or retailers associated with the products above, I did not receive any compensation for including these products on this list.  This list was put together collectively by the members of my household based on our personal experiences with these products.

Silly Monkey Stories: Big Brothers Rock!

This year for Christmas, we allowed each child to pick out gifts to give to their siblings. I wanted to teach them that there is a lot of joy to be experienced from making someone else happy. Each child got to wrap his or her gifts and somehow managed to keep the gifts a secret from each other all the way until Christmas morning.

The twins each got their big brother a Nintendo DS game since they knew that is what he had asked Santa for this year. What big brother got the twins beat all, even the presents that Santa left for them. He had gotten each twin a Pillow Pet. I had never seen such excitement and glee on Makenzie's face and Luke gave Jake the biggest hug ever, which in turn put a huge smile on Jake's face. I hope Jake remembers how good it felt to make someone else happy like that for a long time.
