The Shark Rocket Ultra-Lightweight Upright Vacuum Offers Power and Versatility

Thank you to Shark for providing a complimentary vacuum sample for us to base this review upon. All opinions expressed are my own.

We have a messy house (a very messy house). Cleaning up after 3 kids, 3 cats, 3 hermit crabs, and 3 fish is not easy, especially with our schedule. It seems like by the time we get done with everything at the end of each day, cleaning is the very last thing we have the time and energy for. And as result, we welcome anything that can make those tasks easier.

Over the years we have tried many different vacuum cleaners, all with varying degrees of success (or failure). My basic theory now is that big and expensive vacuums are better than small and “gimmicky” vacuums. We must have tried 4-5 lightweight and compact vacuums over the years in the hopes of making the task easier. I would say all have failed as we stopped using all of them. It is really a shame too, because lugging my full sized vacuums up and down the stairs is not a joy.

When I learned of the opportunity to try the Shark Rocket Ultra-Lightweight Upright Vacuum, another compact vacuum, I was equally weary and excited. Weary because of our history with small vacuums, but also excited because it was a Shark, a brand I have always had some luck with.

The Shark Rocket Ultra-Lightweight Vacuum is very compact and sleek in appearance. It looks a great deal like a ultra high end competitor’s vacuum I see for $400. It has a pistol style grip, bagless canister, and a long tube leading to the powered vacuum head.

This Rocket comes with all of the accessories you would expect with a full sized vacuum, let alone a compact machine.  In addition to the standard assortment of accessories, this Rocket comes with a “Pet Glide Tool” (hard floor head) that can also do furniture and a telescoping crevice tool.. Both the standard powered head and the hard floor head pivot for maximum control. Just flip your wrist and the head turns. It required very little effort to pivot both heads.

Two items that came with the Rocket Ultra-Lightweight Upright that really made me happy was a wall hook for storage and a giant bag to keep all of the parts together. Can you imagine that? After all of the years I have owned vacuum cleaners this is the first one that did anything at all to account for all of the extra parts. I wonder why such a simple and inexpensive solution to an issue we all have took so long to fix, and so simply? Kudos Shark.

How did the Shark Rocket Ultra-Lightweight Upright Vacuum clean? Pretty darn good. For a compact and lightweight vacuum it is fairly powerful. I was easily able to clean out the crevices in my laminate wood floor. This Rocket was a joy to use on the stairs with the super long cord. The unit is so light and easy to control and it made short work of piles of cat hair and dust.

Emptying the unit is as easy as standing over your trash bin and pressing one button, gravity did the rest. I didn't have to reach in and pull anything out manually, all the dirt, cat hair, and dust just fell out. To change or clean the filter is as easy as flipping a tab on the top of the unit. Shark did a great job of making this Rocket easy to maintain, a feature easily as important as being lightweight.

The Rocket Ultra-Lightweight Upright does what it is supposed to do. It is light and easy to use, has great suction, and comes with all of the accessories I need to keep my house clean. The Shark Rocket Vacuum is likely the nicest compact vacuum we have owned to date. It is so light and user-friendly, my 9 year old son just lost any excuse to not vacuum the floors….

You can buy the Shark Rocket Ultra-Lightweight Upright Vacuum most places vacuums are sold for the retail price of $179.99, but Shark sells this Rocket directly for just $159.80.

Giveaway & Review: Hoover Platinum LiNX Cordless Stick Vac [CLOSED]

We only have carpeting up on the second floor of our home, so it did not make sense to lug our big heavy vacuum up and down the stairs. On the main floor, which consists of our living room, dining room, kitchen, and a half bath, we have only hardwood and stone tile flooring. As a household of 5 with young children and pets, I think we were the perfect household to test out what the Hoover Platinum Collection Cordless Stick Vac could really handle. We've been known to break our share of vacuums just from all the pet hair alone.

Please take a minute to see how well the Hoover Platinum Cordless Stick Vac performed on our wood and stone tile floors:

What I thought about this lightweight vacuum cleaner:

1) This vacuum is so compact and lightweight that it is a breeze to handle. The head fits into corners well, it vacuums close to the wall, and it is very easy to use for vacuuming the stairs.

2) I love that it is bagless and contains a replaceable HEPA filter.

3) This tall narrow vacuum does not look like it could stand upright by itself, but it does. Because it is so compact, it is very easy to store in a closet, even if it is a little broom closet.

4) The handle is very comfortable to grip. I think it is smart to have the labels upside down on the handle so that the operator can read them easily.

5) This vacuum has the option of vacuuming with or without the beater brush.

6) The vacuum's head sits low to the ground, so when we were vacuuming anything that had pieces or chunks, we had to lift the vacuum a little off the ground, otherwise some of the pieces would just get pushed around by the front of the vacuum.

7) I love that this vacuum is cordless and has a rechargeable battery rather than needing to be placed in a charger. It comes with a LiNX lithium battery, which claims to have power that never fades, and an Energy Star approved charger. Charging this vacuum is as easy as charging your digital camera.

8) Another great thing about the LiNX lithium ion batteries is that they are interchangeable between all the cordless Hoover LiNX products from this line.

9) The receptacle for the debris is very easy to remove and empty. You just push the button to release it and snap it back into place after you have emptied it. There are even instructions right at the bottom about how to care for the receptacle and the vacuum's filter.

10) As you saw in the video, this stick vac did very well against common household debris, such as pet hair, something chunky like dry rice cereal, something larger like scraps of cardboard (from the cats scratching on cardboard boxes), and something fine like cocoa powder.

11) When the stick vac vacuumed up the dry cereal, it actually grinded it into the consistency of sand, so it did not take up a lot of room at all inside the vacuum.

12) For something larger like the scraps of cardboard, you can see below that the larger pieces did not make it down into the recepticle.

13) One of the main things I wanted to test was this vacuum's capacity. It may be difficult to see in the photos, but there is a line about halfway down that reads "MAX". We were able vacuum the whole main floor before we passed that line.

I have to say that I was extremely surprised that this lightweight stick vac could pick up almost everything that our heavy duty vacuum could. I have not had this vacuum long enough to know how long it would last with such heavy use. I do think this Hoover Platinum Cordless Stick Vac would be great for light cleaning and occasional heavy cleaning when it is called for.

Currently you can find the Hoover Platinum Collection Cordless Stick Vac on Hoover.com and at major retailers, such as Walmart, Best Buy, and Target.

Review: Vroom Solo Freestanding Vacuum

With 3 young children plus 1 dog and 4 cats, our household was a perfect choice for putting the Vroom Solo to the test. To clarify, the Vroom Solo is a stand-alone unit that does not require a central vacuum system.

This unit is about the size of a computer tower, approximately 3-1/4"w x 16-1/4"h x 22d. The power unit is about 10-1/2"w x 7-1/4"h x 14-1/4"d. Equipped with a 24ft hose, these two pieces are meant to be housed inside the cabinet under the kitchen sink. There is another unit available that is designed to be placed inside your bathroom vanity as well.

We had originally intended to install the unit beneath our kitchen sink. While doing so, we found that we may have a tiny leak because there was some moisture. Just to be cautious we decided to put the Vroom against the wall under our kitchen table where it would still be fully accessible, but still out of the way and mostly out of sight.

What I thought about the Vroom Solo Vacuum:

1) It turned out to be very important for us that the Vroom Solo can be used in any grounded outlet.

2) Since our unit is centrally located, the 24ft hose can reach to almost every corner of the main floor of our house and I love that it is completely retractable. In fact, the hose automatically retracts when you replace the nozzle in the dock.

3) This vacuum is so powerful that it allows us to clean in places where we cannot normally fit a vacuum or a broom, like in the space between the refrigerator and the kitchen cabinet for instance.

4) The adjustable wand allows us to vacuum cobwebs on the ceilings and other places that are normally out of our reach and even our upright vacuum's attachments cannot reach.

5) I love not having to lug the heavy vacuum around and not having to deal with a power cord.

6) The vacuum is a little loud, but it is a small price to pay for having such a powerful vacuum.

7) Having this unit on our main floor allows me to leave our upright upstairs on the second floor. It is such a relief for my husband not to have to carry the vacuum up and down the stairs anymore.

8) Does it make me lazy that I love this last feature? The Vroom actually turns on by itself when you lift the hose up and turns off after you place the nozzle back in the dock.

Please take a minute to view this short video, which demonstrates the power of the Vroom Solo on everyday messes, such as cereal, cat food, crackers, and flour.

To see more of what the Vroom can do, visit VroomYourRoom.com . For a limited time, you can register to win a Vroom of your very own. To find a dealer near you, simply use the Vroom store locator.
