The Most Uncomfortable Sofa Ever!

A little over 3 years ago, we had purchased two cribs in anticipation of having twins plus what we thought was a comfortable sofa to add more seating for our growing family. The sofa had an L-configuration and had a chaise attached to one end. It was perfect because two people could stretch out on it while still leaving enough seating for the rest of the family. Well, through the years one piece after another was ruined by our pets. Now we are left with two armless sofas pushed together to make one very long sofa. The sofa is not very deep, so it is not comfortable to curl up in. Good thing we had much better luck with the cribs.

Since we do not want to invest in new living room furniture just yet, we wondered what we could do to make this situation bearable. Well, CSN Stores came to our rescue. This company incorporates over 200 retail sites, which carry everything from home furnishings to cookware, toys to fitness equipment, and everything in between. They will soon be sending us an ottoman to review, which will be the perfect solution to our sofa problem. Now we will have room for someone to stretch out without their taking up half the seating.

I am extremely excited to try out the Vernaccia Leather Ottoman from CSN Stores. Look for my review of this ottoman in the coming weeks.

No compensation was received for sharing this information with my readers, however, I do have an upcoming review scheduled for a CSN Store product.

Giveaway & Review: Money Savvy Pig Teaching Bank [CLOSED]

Our oldest just turned 6! Every year in December, January, and February, he always receives some money for Christmas, his birthday, and Chinese New Year. This year, it became very clear that we need to start creating some good habits for him when it comes to spending money before we can even consider starting to give him an allowance. Right now, when he has any money, he is likely to want to spend it.

This opportunity to review the Money Savvy Pig could not have presented itself at a better time. This product provided enough guidance to help me explain the other possibilities that exist for money other than spending it. I know not all of it sunk in since my son is only 6, but I think some of it was understood.

What I thought about our Platinum Edition Money Savvy Pig:

1) The Platinum Edition Money Savvy Pig comes in this ready-to-wrap gift box, which is a plus if you are buying this item for a gift.

2) The design of this pig is very well thought out overall. It has four slots on its back, which lead into four separate compartments. Each compartment represents the money your child has opted to save, spend, donate, and invest. Then there are a sheet of labels, some preprinted and some blank, that you can place above each category to help remind your child of his or her goals.

3) Another smart thing about the design is that each of the four feet is also labeled. The covers come off and each releases the money that is in the corresponding compartment. I wish there was a way to make these covers hinged or connected to each foot somehow. I think if a child takes off all four feet, it will be a process to figure out which cover goes on which foot.

4) Explaining the four compartments was a challenge. I think my son eventually got the gist of it. When we were deciding what to label each compartment, he immediately wanted the car sticker for the "Spend" compartment because to him it represents toys . . . toy cars to be exact. When I asked him what he would like to save money for, he wanted to put the sticker for food because he thinks we don't have enough cookies in the house. When it came to deciding what cause he would like to contribute his money towards, I gave him some choices . . . the food pantry where my sister and BIL volunteer, the animal shelter, or the public library . . . all things he could relate to. He ended up choosing the animal shelter. His eyes just glazed over when I told him he should choose a college fund for the investment section. Good thing he just trusted me on that matter.

5) If your child is around my son's age, then he or she likely needs practice counting money. This was a wonderful opportunity for us to have a mini lesson involving coins.

6) After my son counted his money, we had to decide what percentage to put in each section. I was not surprised that he wanted to put the most in the spend category. So we put ended up putting 50% of his money into "Spend", 25% into "Invest", and 12.5% each into "Save" and "Donate".

7) My son did not have any dollar bills to put in his pig, but he will as soon as the Chinese New Year rolls around. The photos on the manufacturer's website do show bills inside the pigs. They can clearly fit through the slots if folded into quarters, but I am worried that they might not come out easily through the legs and feet. Maybe if the pig was slightly larger, then the openings on its feet would be larger so this would not be a concern.

8) I personally thought my son would prefer a translucent pig over the platinum so he could see his money growing, but he actually thought the platinum one was pretty cool because it was very shiny and had a mirror effect.

Currently, the Platinum Edition Money Savvy Pig is on sale for $16.99, bringing it down to the price point of the colored piggy banks, which come in five different colors. To learn more about teaching children about money, visit the children and money blog authored by Susan Beacham. You can also find Money Savvy Generation on Facebook.

Thank you to Money Savvy Generation for sending us a bank on which to base this review and also for providing another bank for our contest prize.

What you can win:
One lucky reader will receive a Money Savvy Pig (winner may choose from blue or green).

Shop 'n' Share: Disney Princess Ornaments

I just wanted to share this bargain I found recently at our local Disney Store. After Christmas, I found these 7-3/4" tall Disney Princess ornaments on sale for just $3.99 each. They were regularly $14.50 .

I picked them up because I thought they would look great hanging in my daughter's room year round. Eventually, when we move, I would like to do her room in lavender, yellow, and white. There is nothing specifically Christmas-like about these ornaments. I had seen other ones in the past, but the ribbons for hanging were red.

The skirts are not quite as full as pictured, but they are still very pretty. You should also know that there are no legs under those skirts.

I know that these are sold out on DisneyStore.com, but you could probably still find them at your local Disney Store.

FedEx Office is No Longer Just For the Office

FedEx Office (formerly FedEx Kinko's) has long been the go-to place for businesses who need to have flyers copied, booklets bound, and posters laminated. In this DIY age, FedEx Office decided that it was time its customers realized the endless possibilities their services can offer to those outside of the office and workplace.

Out of Office is FedEx Offices new blog which shares ideas for fun and creative projects. If you like to give handmade gifts, this is one blog you should add to your feed subscriptions. I was extremely impressed with the all the cost-friendly projects offered by the six Out of Office bloggers. My favorite article is the one written by Kellie Bell about how to turn your leftover holiday wrapping paper into placemats, coasters, bookmarks, and notebooks. These are all easy project ideas I can do with my children to create inexpensive gifts . . . gifts they will be proud to present to their loved ones.

The content in the Out of Office blog is not limited to handmade gifts. If you take a look around you will find ideas for event planning, favors, and DIY home decor. To keep up with new project ideas, you can follow the Out of Office Blog on Twitter.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of FedEx Office. In addition, Mom Central sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Giveaway & Review: Things Remembered "Race Car Water Globe" [CLOSED]

As we get closer to Christmas, the amount of time left to order personalized gifts online is growing shorter and shorter. Things Remembered ships all personalized items within 3 business days. That is remarkable compared to many other sites, which have a disclaimer that it could take up to 2 to 3 weeks to ship your personalized gifts. If you are a last minute shopper, you can also visit your local Things Remembered store location to place your order.

Things Remembered offers personalized gift ideas for pretty much everyone on your list. They offer 30 different gifts for boys alone. This Race Car Water Globe was a perfect choice for our kindergartner who is obsessed with cars.

You can insert 2 photos back-to-back inside the water globe filled with glitter. I chose to use the same school portrait on both sides, but it would be nice to use a baby picture on one side and then a current photo on the other.

I think this race car will surely be a cherished keepsake for my son. We had the personalization plate engraved with a special message for him. I can see him still proudly displaying this water globe on his desk 20 years from now.

One feature that I will expect to especially appeal to my son is that this race car has working tires.

I also want to point out that changing the photo is extremely easy. You need only to turn and remove the cover on the bottom and then remove the piece which holds the photos.

Here are additional gift ideas for the rest of the family . . .

The Things Remembered Custom Couture Jewelry includes both necklaces and bracelets. It is so easy to customize your jewelry. Simply select one of four different types of chains, of which one is a strand of pearls. Then just select an engravable pendant and a mini charm to top it off. Personalized jewelry would make a great gift for a mother, grandmother, a daughter, a favorite aunt, or a best friend.

A personal, but practical gift idea for a father, big brother, or best man would be this 1GB silver-plated Memory Stick Keychain. It can be personalized with a name on the front and a special message on the back. Every time the recipient plugs this flash drive into his computer, he will think of you.

Here is one of several gifts in the Things Remembered Make-A-Wish line. For every product sold from this special line of gifts, $2 will be donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. This teddy bear water globe features Max Teddy Bear, who is both soft and posable. Plus the water globe can be personalized with a name and short message. This gift would be perfect for any member of the family and can be displayed all year round.

Here is another charming gift that would be suitable for almost anyone. It is a motorized rotating musical Snowman Water Globe. The song it plays is White Christmas and the snow blows without your having to shake the snowman. This nearly 8" snowman will surely put a smile on your loved one's face.

Visit your local Things Remembered store or browse ThingsRemembered.com for additional holiday gift ideas.

Thank you to Things Remembered for providing us with both a review product and a contest prize free of charge.

Giveaway & Review: Campus Quilt T-Shirt Quilts ($150 GC) [CLOSED]

I have stated again and again that personalized gifts are probably the most cherished. Many of them become instant keepsakes that will remind the recipients of a special time in their lives and of the person who gave them that gift.

In our case, we now have a family heirloom . . . a custom quilt that can be passed down from generation to generation. I chose a 20-square quilt and selected one Dad t-shirt that belonged to my husband and 19 baby items comprised of clothing my 3 children wore during the first year of their lives, including some preemie items. I also opted to have our family's name embroidered on one of the squares.

What I thought about our custom quilt from the Campus Quilt Company:

1) When we first opened the package and saw our finished quilt, both my husband and I were speechless. The quilt was so beautiful and pretty much summed up some of the most cherished moments of our lifetime . . . the first 12 months of each of our children's lives.

2) The ordering process was easy for the most part. Each customer receives a quilt kit that includes a postage-paid mailer plus instructions on how to number your t-shirts or baby items in the order in which you would like them to appear. There are also options for sashing, embroidery, extra batting, etc . . . The kit even includes swatches for you to choose the color and type of fabric you would like to be used in creating your custom quilt. For me, the most difficult parts were choosing which baby items to include and what colors of fabric to use for our quilt.

3) I was very impressed that someone from Campus Quilt Company called me personally to ask a few questions. Since this product is so specialized, it was much better to speak directly to someone rather than communicating through email. The person I spoke with was extremely helpful. Not only did she have questions for me, but she also offered suggestions (such as the alternating blocks of color), which ultimately made our quilt look that much better.

4) When I was choosing my baby items, I kept wondering how bulky this quilt would end up being. For example, my daughter's very first dress had some pleats, but it turned out not to be bulky at all. The technique the Campus Quilt Company used was to dissect the garment and to only use the front layer.

5) After receiving our quilt, I was much more comfortable donating the remainder of our baby clothes. They literally filled 30% of our attic space, but I could not bring myself to let go of them until now.

6) The turn-around time was quick! Even though there was the delay of those few questions, I received my custom-made quilt in about 2-1/2 weeks from when the company received my quilt items.

7) The communication on the part of Campus Quilt Company was excellent. I received a confirmation when my quilt kit was sent out, when my returned quilt kit was received, and when my finished quilt was shipped back to me.

8) I cannot finish this review without commenting on the amazing workmanship. There was not one crooked seam or one thread out of place.

Take a look at why this quilt is so precious to me . . .

(Click on any image to enlarge)

One cause for anxiety about a custom order, such as this quilt, is that you are trusting a stranger with your irreplaceable items. I cannot say enough about how pleased I am with our finished quilt. When I see this quilt, I smile, am flooded with beautiful memories of my children, and just feel like it is proof that my husband and I did something great together by building this family. To be able to make someone else feel like this would be an incredible gift.

To learn more about these custom quilts, visit CampusQuilt.com . There you will surely find inspiration to create something special for a holiday, Mother's Day, Father's Day, or birthday gift or to mark a special occasion, such as an anniversary, a milestone birthday, or your child going off to college. The possibilities are truly endless.

Review: Guidecraft Kiddie Couch

Twintuitive Product #8

I chose this Kiddie Couch from Accent Furniture Direct, one of the leading online resources for home decor, to feature as a "TWINtuitive Product" because space is one thing households with twins quickly become short on. This small-armed children's sofa can fit two children (maybe even three if they're small) comfortably while measuring only 31.5" wide. This one piece of furniture takes up much less space than buying two armchairs and it costs less as well. Plus a sofa is more conducive to bonding activities, such as reading together.

What my family and I thought about the Guidecraft Kiddie Couch:

1) It took me very little time to assemble this couch. Although the illustrations that accompanied the directions were not 100% accurate, I found the assembly to be easy and it required no tools.

2) The body of the sofa is canvas sling on a steel bar frame, similar to a futon's. Then the one-piece cushion sits on top of that. If I had not put it together myself, I would never have known how sturdy this sofa really is from the steel frame right down to the hardwood base.

3) For a household like ours with young children and pets, the removable cover is an extremely important feature.

4) Since I am too big to try it out myself, I cannot tell you for sure how comfortable this sofa is. My 5yr old son claims that it is and I can tell you that I found my 2.5yr old son curled up asleep on it one night.

5) I think all 3 of my children are excited to have a kid-sized sofa in a house where so many things are huge and where very few things are off-limits to adults

6) With my 5yr old son in the lead, there have been many hours of pretend play that has taken place around or on this couch.

I could not be happier with this piece of children's furniture from Accent Furniture Direct. I believe they currently carry this Guidecraft Kiddie Couch plus the matching chairs and end table in three different colors at reduced prices. If you've never visited the site, I must warn you that you could spend hours looking at furniture, lamps, accent tables, clocks . . . almost anything for decorating your home. They also offer Free Ground Shipping for many items.
