D-Link Partners with a Non-Profit Rescue Organization to Promote Pet Adoption

Our two rescued Chihuahua mix puppies | www.3Garnets2Sapphires.com
Thank you to D-Link for sending us a Pan & Tilt Day/Night Wi-Fi Camera (DCS-5020L) to monitor our rescue dogs when we're not at home.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Last August, we began a new adventure by adopting two rescue Chihuahua mix puppies.  We went to meet and possibly adopt one puppy and ended up with two.  We just couldn't split these brothers up.  Yes, we gave them a forever home, but they really rescued us.  They've brought so much joy to our household and have taught our children how to be nurturing, responsible, and to think of someone else's needs more often.

One of the things that make potential pet-owners hesitant to bring pets into their homes is not being able to watch them every minute, especially when they are at work or just out doing errands.  The D-Link Pan & Tilt Day/Night Wi-Fi Camera, is the perfect solution to this problem because it allows you to monitor a room in your home from your computer, tablet, or phone.  This is such an easy way to have peace of mind that your pet is safe and happy while you're away from the house.  D-Link agrees and that's why they've partnered with a non-profit rescue organization in California, Paw Prints in the Sand Animal Rescue, to promote pet adoption and responsible pet ownership.

How is D-Link helping more pets find forever homes?
  • D-Link will donate a Pan & Tilt Wi-Fi Camera to new pet owners who adopt from Paw Prints in the Sand to enable them to view a live feed of their pet, dog walker, or anyone else who comes in contact with their pet while the owner is away from the house.
  • D-Link and Paw Prints in the Sand is developing a series of training and animal behavioral videos to help new pet owners maintain a happy home for the newest member of the family by understanding their basic needs.

11 Rules of Park and Recreation Etiquette

Since Spring is just around the corner and we've just turned our clocks an hour ahead in preparation, you may be starting to get into a warm weather state of mind.  It's tough to imagine if you still have snow on the ground like we do, but the warmer weather really will be upon us soon.  Our family is very lucky to live by a beautiful state park, with a large lake and plenty of picnic tables and grills.  This is a perfect time to remind ourselves of parks and recreation etiquette in order to ensure that one family's enjoyment does not put a damper on another family's day of fun.

3 Things I Would Love to Do When We Move

First of all, I would like to clarify that we are not moving.  Despite the fact that we are upside-down on a mortgage for a home that is way too small for a family of five, sometimes I like to think towards the distant future when we will be able to move to a larger home with a big fenced-in backyard.  Aside from the typical things that I would want for my family, such as each child having his or her own bedroom and having a separate playroom, I have a few things that are on my own personal wishlist . . .

1.  Adopt two dogs-  I miss having dogs so much.  Our house is too crowded right now to own dogs, especially since my husband has his heart set on owning ones from some of the larger breeds.

2.  Have a craft/sewing room- Right now, I have craft supplies tucked into nooks and crannies of every closet in the house almost.  I constantly worry that the children will tamper with the supplies I have sitting out for a project I am planning.  I also keep thinking that maybe I would sew more if my sewing machine was already set up at a table ready for me to use at anytime.  Right now, it is zipped up in its case and in the back of our closet.

3.  Build a really cool playhouse in the backyard- I know my husband is probably hoping for a large play structure, a trampoline, or a tree fort, but I would love to have a beautiful playhouse that all three of our children could enjoy.  If we had the space and the money, I would really like to build a small playhouse for each of the children . . . each one a different style to match the child's personality.  Can you just see it now? . . . a mini neighborhood of whimsical playhouses!  It would be such a fun family project to build, paint, and decorate the playhouses inside and out.  I bet our daughter would want hers to be pink.

I also thought about adding my own office to the list.  Right now, my desk is adjacent to my husband's and I rather enjoy that.  (Not sure if my husband feels the same way or not though.)  After having my desk next to his, I think I would feel lonely working in my own office.

What's on your wishlist for the future?

5 Favorite Tree Ornaments Bring Fond Memories

Since we spent our first Christmas living together five years before we were married, my husband and I would add new ornaments to the tree every year.  Some were personalized ornaments marked with the year and some were just ornaments that we really loved.  Needless to say, sixteen years later, our tree is quite full.  That does not stop us from adding new ornaments every year, especially since our first child came into our life and then the twins thereafter.

Every year when we trim the tree as a family, we all reminisce as we hang certain ornaments on the tree.  Even our not yet 5 year old twins will find delight in recognizing the ornaments bearing their names from past years.

Pregnancy Ornaments
The ornaments below mark the two Christmas' when we were expecting.  It was such a special time for us even though both pregnancies were difficult ones.  I cherish both these ornament so much.

Couple Ornaments
This was the first ornament I purchased for our first Christmas tree in our first apartment.  That seemed like a lifetime ago, when both my husband and I were young and stupid.

Pet Ornaments
Before we had children, our dogs and cats were our children.  Even after the children came into our lives, I still would get one personalized ornament every year with all our pets names listed on it.  Our Beagle Buddy was my very first dog ever and I had him before I even met my husband.  Although he did not quite make it to Christmas in 2009, I made sure he had his own ornament (left photo below).  He was nearly 16 years old when we had to let him go and he was loved by everyone, even the four-legged members of our household.

Charitable Ornaments
The ornament shown above on the right is one of my favorites.  Not only does the dog on it remind me of our beloved Beagle, but these were ornaments created by children's art.  We purchased a few of these about 14 or 15 years ago, all with a different design.  These were being sold at our local mall and the proceeds benefited Project Bread.  In the years following, I always looked for more of these ornaments, but I never saw them being sold again.

Thank you for taking the time to stroll down memory lane with me.  I hope your holiday is full of fond memories as well!

How to Best Care for Your Pets During the Winter

Winter is creeping up on us fast, so it's time to begin taking the necessary precautions. That means it's time to put up the storm windows, time to break out the space heaters, and time to get your winter clothes out of the attic. But what about your pets? Depending on where you live, your pets need special care and consideration during these cold winter months, too. The following are some tips for you to follow to ensure that you're properly taking care of your furry friends during wintertime.

  • Be sure to take your pets to the vet for a winter check-up before the cold weather blows in. Your vet can look your animals over to ensure that they don't have any conditions that would make them more vulnerable to cold weather.
  • After you take your dog for a walk during the winter months, be sure to rinse and dry off his paws. Rock salt, which is commonly used to melt ice on sidewalks and driveways, can seriously irritate footpads. If your dog's paws do get irritated, purchase a soothing lotion and save a few bucks by using a petmeds coupon code.
  • Have a cat who spends most of her time outdoors? Break the habit during wintertime and keep her indoors. Cats can actually freeze to death if left outdoors for too long in the cold. If you live in extreme cold environments like we do, we have to keep our cats indoors. When the temperatures outdoors get below zero, we have to force our cats to stay inside. Sometimes they would rather stay in our heated garage or a quiet dark room in our house. Make sure if your cat gets out that you have a small-insulated box or warmer area they can retreat to.
  • If it's too chilly for you to stand at your open door without a coat on, then it's too cold for your dog to be left outside for too long without some sort of protection, whether it be a coat or dog house.
  • Before you get into your car, knock on the hood or honk the horn. Cats will often crawl under the hood to curl up against your warm car engine.
  • If you live close to a pond or lake that becomes icy in the wintertime, be extremely cautious about allowing your dog to play near the ice. He could easily fall through that ice and become injured or trapped.
  • Provide your animals with plenty of water during the winter. They are just as likely to become dehydrated during the cold winter months as they are in the hot summer months. Also, don't think that snow is a good substitute for water—it's not. If its cold outside, any water in your pet’s water dish will freeze, so keep that in mind.
  • If you take long walks, never ever let your dog off her leash on snow or ice. She can easily lose her scent and become lost in this type of situation. And always be sure to equip your pup with ID tags just in case something does happen and she wanders off.
  • Dogs will often seek out heat by snuggling very close to heat sources such as lamps and space heaters. Avoid burns by pet-proofing your radiator, space heaters, lamps, and fireplaces.

As you can see, there are many things that you should keep in mind when caring for your pets during wintertime. What other tips and pieces of advice would you like to share with fellow pet owners regarding how to best care for animals in cold weather?

Melissa is the co-owner of getpetcoupons.com, has two cats of her own and lives in Wasilla, Alaska where the winters can be extremely cold and harsh for animals. Whether you live in a harsh winter environment like Melissa or in the South where winters are usually mild, be sure to take care of your pets and be prepared for any type of winter conditions. Now would be a great time to get your pet's health checked by a licensed Vet and be sure to always use a 1800petmeds coupon code or a PetcareRX coupon on any of your pet's medications needs.

PetArmor Flea & Tick Protection

Like many pet owners, we have battled with fleas so we know how important flea protection is. We have tried every brand of flea prevention available and have had good results with some and very bad results with others. When PetArmor offered me their “Take a Hike” gift pack along with the chance to review their flea, tick and lice protection, I was happy to try it out; not only because it’s always nice to test this type of product without the upfront investment, but because PetArmor is priced well below other leading brands, so if it worked and we liked it, it would save us money in the long run.

PetArmor is the first EPA approved generic fipronil product used to treat both dogs and cats. It is sold through major retailers, such as Walmart, and offers a substantial savings to leading flea protection. PetArmor is available in two forms: PetArmor which kills fleas, ticks, and chewing lice and PetArmor Plus which kills fleas, flea larvae, flea eggs, ticks, and chewing lice.

I’ll admit that I was skeptical about whether PetArmor would work or not. We have been buying our flea/tick protection in a pill form because the topical kinds just don’t work for our animals. Happily, though, PetArmor proved me wrong. To do the study thoroughly, I gave one of my dogs the pill form, one an old tube of Frontline, and one PetArmor. The dog with Frontline still had fleas 3 days later, so I put on PetArmor and they disappeared within hours. My dog that was given the pill was flea free longer than the dogs that had PetArmor, but PetArmor is much more inexpensive, so that’s fine by me. Overall, I was very pleased with how PetArmor performed and will be purchasing it again.

You can buy PetArmor for dogs and cats at Walmart, Amazon.com, and Sam's Club.  Also, visit PetArmor on Facebook to take the PetArmor Pledge to protect your pets.  Each pledge taken will prompt a $1 donation to the ASPCA, up to $100,000.

Thank you to PetArmor for providing a complimentary product sample and gift pack for us to base this review upon and for providing a second gift pack for our contest prize.

Review: Febreze Air Effects Pet Odor Eliminator

Unconditional love from man’s best friend also comes with (sometimes) uncontrollable odors. We have three dogs at our house, a Chocolate Labrador named Rezner, a mini-Dachshund named Ruby, and a mini-Chihuahua/Yorkie mix named Mogwai. With three dogs, we have pet odors frequently. We try to be Green in our odor eliminating, but sometimes you just need something stronger. I’ve been using Febreze Pet Odor Eliminator air freshener spray for about a month now and am pleased with the results. It doesn’t just cover the stinky pet smells, but rather it completely takes them away.

The aerosol spray is easy to use and provides good coverage over any room in my house. It also comes in other pet odor eliminating solutions such as fabric spray, candles, and scented oil warmers. Plus, Febreze is well-known for having great solutions to all your “stinkin’” problems.

You can find Febreze Pet Odor Eliminator products at most retailers of household products nationwide.  To learn more about this product, visit Febreze.com, Febreze on Facebook, and Febreze on Twitter.

Thank you to Febreze for providing a complimentary product sample for us to base this review upon.

Holiday 2010 Giveaway: Lilly & Abbie Custom Luxury Dog Beds (ARV $150) [CLOSED]

If you are a dog-lover like I am, then your dog is a full-fledged member of the family. That means your dog must have his or her own bed just like all the other members of the family. Lilly & Abby, an online boutique for custom dog beds, currently has Christmas dog beds in stock. These holiday dog beds may be designed for the holidays, but they are beautiful enough to use in your home all year round. You can also purchase additional covers to change the look to match your decor in the future.

I had the chance to create a custom dog bed from Lilly & Abby. The beds are available in 4 sizes in the rectangular shape and 3 sizes in the round. All beds have the option of polyester fill or a recycled plastic bottle fill. There are approximately 90 fabrics to choose from for the main body, boxing strip, and the piping. If you have your own fabric leftover from reupholstering your sofa or your custom window treatments or throw pillows, then you can send your pre-washed fabric to Lilly & Abbie to have a custom dog bed or pillow created in that fabric.

For those who are worried about purchasing a luxury dog bed for their furbaby, you can take comfort in knowing that the slipcovers are machine washable in cold water and they can be line dried. Waterproof liners can also be purchased for an additional $35.

I was extremely impressed by the workmanship on our custom dog bed. There are two things that impressed me the most. Firstly, the zipper is completely hidden, so you do not have to worry about your dog bed facing a certain way, especially if it is round. Secondly, the piping is very clean and straight, which gives the bed its highly tailored look.

Meet the ultimate "pampered pooch" Yogi. If this Peekapoo could speak, he would say, "Thank you Lilly & Abbie!"

To find out more about Lilly & Abbie custom dog beds, which start as low as $100, visit LillyAndAbbieDogBeds.com . Because a custom dog bed takes 2 to 4 weeks to ship, a digital or printed Lilly & Abbie gift certificate would make a great gift so that your favorite dog-lover can customize the bed themselves.

Thank you to Lilly & Abbie for providing a complimentary product sample for us to base this review upon and for providing a luxury dog bed for our contest prize.

Holiday 2010 Giveaway: "Fisher-Price Pets" Dog Toys [CLOSED]

Fisher-Price has come out with a line of toys for dogs that mimic popular toys for children and we were sent three to try out for our dogs. I have two dogs that played with these toys. Mogwai is a mini-Yorkie/Chihuahua mix that belongs to my sister, who is temporarily living with us. Ruby is our mini-Dachshund and she’s about 1 year old and really doesn’t care much for dog toys. We’ve bought her many of them over the past few months, and she really couldn’t care less. Therefore I was truly surprised to see that she loves these Fisher-Price dog toys, as is seen by the picture of the chewed up toys.

The Fisher-Price Chatter Pup Telebone, looks like the classic Fisher-Price pull toy, the Chatter Telephone. The telebone is hooked to the squeaking “chatter” part with a rope that is strong and a favorite for most dogs. The Fisher-Price Xylobone is the dog version of the xylophone. It is soft and great for chewing. It too squeaks and has the fun rope feature. Finally, and Ruby’s personal favorite, is the Fisher-Price Ruff-a-Stack. The Ruff-a-Stack is similar to the very popular baby toy, the Rock-a-Stack, and is just as cool. The two pieces can stack together or come apart and are held together by a rope. Ruby has played with this one the most, as you can see. We have played tug-of-war with this and she has chewed on it for hours and it’s still holding up nicely. The rope finally broke a few days before writing this, but that is to be expected from any dog toy after being played with so vigorously.

I think there are many reasons Ruby likes these toys so much. For one, they are much more like real toys than rubbery and thick like many other dog toys. They are made of a plastic-like material that is strong but still flexible. Also, all are heavily scented like peanut butter, which could also hold the draw to them. Either way, Ruby and Mogwai both love these dog toys. I was happy with them as well, and have already contacted my local Petsmart to see if they have them in stock. I think these will be a staple with us for a long time.

The Fisher-Price dog toys come in sizes small and large for any size dog. All three toys are $7.99 for the small version, $11.99 for the large one and are carried locally at Petsmart, Petsmart.com, and the Fisher-Price online store.

Thank you to Fisher-Price for sending us complimentary sample products to base this review upon and for providing additional product for our contest prize.
