The Pelican ProGear Urban U105 Laptop Backpack is Both Rugged and Tech-friendly

I work in IT and use a backpack to keep my critical gear in, I take it with me just about everywhere I go. It is not uncommon for me to have 2 laptops, books, tools, and a variety of cables in my pack at any given time. As you can imagine, I need a high quality and professional grade pack to keep up with my needs.

For the last couple of years I have been using (and have been mostly pleased with) a pack from a well known outdoor company, but when I had an opportunity to try out the Pelican ProGear Urban U105 Backpack I jumped at it. I have to say I LOVE Pelican products and have been a fan for years. Would the ProGear meet my expectations?

Yes it very much did!

(Click any photo to enlarge)

As seen in our Holiday Gift Guide For Men, the ProGear U104 is a multi compartment backpack made for gear nuts like myself. This is no mere book bag. The construction has the ultra high quality I expected from Pelican. This particular model has 360 degree rigid protection around the laptop compartment for the ultimate safe keeping of your electronics. Not only does the ProGear have all around protection from external damage, there is a decent amount of padding between internal compartments, which is very important to me as I keep some tools in my bag.

There are plenty of pockets and compartments to divide your gear. Inside the 15" laptop section there is a movable zippered bag for your laptop accessories. You can customize the compartment to suite your needs.  There is also a beefy Velcro strap to hold your hardware firmly in place. In addition to the laptop compartment, there is ample padded space for a full sized tablet or iPad in the front pocket. It would not be a problem to carry both at the same time.

Outside of the pack are a few handy loops and pockets for additional gear. On top of the case is a rigid (and totally industrial) hinged handle. No flimsy nylon loop on this case! The ProGear U105 is handsome and looks at home either at work or a weekend trip. The pack is two tone black and gray and nicely accented with red zipper pulls.

I really do not have any complaints about this backpack, it met all of my expectations and even exceeded a few. I can see myself using this Pelican ProGear pack for a long time.

3G2S "Top Picks" 2012 Holiday Gift Guide for Teens

1.  Custom Personalized Paper Coterie Memory Box ($36.00) - This is a 10x10 Memory Keeper Box that resembles a book.  It can be completely customized with your own photos and text on the front, side, and back.  I love how it looks like a book and can keep precious keepsakes easily hidden because it would fit right into any book collection on a shelf.  I chose to create a Memory Box for our oldest son as a tribute to his being an extraordinary big brother.  On the back of the box, I added a photo of our son when he was just 2 days old, plus a special message from my husband and myself.  This 10" square box is approximately 2" deep and would make a wonderful gift box to hold something like a stock certificate, a savings bond, a gift certificate, or a gift card.  I think this would make an especially perfect gift for a teen who will be studying abroad or heading off to college soon, who will want to take along special keepsakes to remind him or her of home.  These 10x10 Memory Keepers are currently available in 14 different customizable templates.  Visit www.papercoterie.com to view all the styles and sizes available.

2.  M-Edge "Design Your Own" Tablet or eReader Case ($30 - $50) - These are two custom Kindle cases I created using the M-Edge Store design app.  We actually have a Kindle and a tablet that are very similarly sized, so I was happy to be able to design one monogram case using the tools included in the app and a second case using a photo we had taken of the liger at King Richard's Faire.  I am extremely pleased with how the two cases turned out both front and back.  If your teen is tech-savvy, then he or she is likely to own an android tablet, a Kindle or a Nook, or an iPad and would appreciate a case created just for them.  If you are gifting a tablet or an eReader this Holiday, then this would be the perfect accessory to go along with it.  Visit www.medgestore.com to view all the customizable tech cases available.

3.  Shainsware Metal Urges Bracelet Kit ($25.00) - This is a bracelet that is made of recycled rubber that can be personalized using the included 33 silvertone letters.  The bracelet kit comes in a compact ready-to-wrap recyclable box that is made of recycled materials.  Although I think the silvertone letters look fantastic on a black bracelet, there are 21 bracelet colors to choose from, including some in translucent glitter.  This would make a perfect gift for any teen who likes to express him or herself.  These bracelets look great layered so you may want to consider purchasing more than one color.  You can even buy additional element packs for more ways to dress up your Shainsware bracelet.  Visit www.shainsware.com to browse the entire selection of Shainsware accessories.

4.  Kipling Jinan Large Backpack ($109.00) - Kipling USA is a well-known brand of quality crinkle nylon bags in all shapes and sizes.  The Jinan Backpack with its classic unisex style would be a perfect gift for a high school or college student.  This backpack measures 11.5" X 16" X 5.5" and has a built-in padded compartment to hold a laptop, netbook, or a tablet.  There are two features that I love about this backpack . . . it has snaps on the side to close when you are traveling light or to unsnap when you need the extra room and it has a faux buckle closure that hides the actual Velcro closure, which allows for easy access.  The backpack above is pictured in Sporty Blue, but there are additional colors available on the Kipling website and on Amazon.com.  Free shipping is currently being offered on both sites for this laptop backpack. Visit www.kipling-usa.com to learn more about this and other Kipling bags and luggage.

5.  WallPops! Enamel Frames by Jonathan Adler ($42.99) - These enamel frame wall decals from WallPops! are the perfect thing to create a wall of inspiration in your teen's bedroom, dorm room, or first apartment.  This kit comes with 12 repositionable and removable frames in bright modern colors.  All you need to do is peel them off the sheet and stick them onto your wall over your favorite photo, magazine clipping, or artwork.  There are 2 colors of each of the 6 frame styles.  The smallest frame measures 4-1/4" square and the largest measures 9-1/2" x 7".  These frames are a perfect alternative to putting holes in your walls or resorting to using tape that will ruin your paint or wallpaper.  To learn more about this frame kit, visit www.wallpops.com.  This kit is currently selling on Amazon.com for $32.38 with Free Super Saver Shipping.

6. Blurb Facebook Photo Book or Instagram Photo Book ($10.95 and up) - Since most teenagers are avid users of Facebook and Instagram, a custom photo book filled with their favorite photos would be such a cherished gift.  The Blurb software is free to use on the retail site and is extremely user-friendly.  You can customize the layout on each page or let the software do all the work for you.  You can also add captions and blocks of text.  The front and back covers are also customizable.  If you would like to give your teen the opportunity to create their own book, then a Blurb gift certificate, which can be for any amount between $20 and $500,  would be the perfect choice.  Our 30-page book is 7"x7", has a hardcover with an image wrap (as opposed to a dust jacket), upgraded black end sheets (as opposed to grey), and costs $30.95 (not including sales tax and shipping).  Visit www.blurb.com to learn more about all their options for custom photo books.

Although complimentary product samples were sent to facilitate this gift guide, all opinions expressed are my own.

Giveaway & Review: Kolobags Laptop Bags, Cases, and Backpacks [CLOSED]

For today's tech-savvy moms, the average Mother's Day gift may not do.  For me, I really needed a new laptop bag.  After attempting to carry around my 17" laptop last year, I finally got a netbook for those times when I really needed a computer with me away from home.  This Reveal Laptop Bag from Kolobags is the perfect bag for a mom like me, who needs to carry a laptop and then some.

This faux leather laptop bag by Kroo bearing chrome hardware is actually made to fit a 13" pc or mac.  In spite of this, the bag actually measures 18"H x 16"W x 4"D.  This bag is perfect for a mom who no longer needs a diaper bag, a student, a professor, or anyone else who needs to carry more than just their laptop and also likes to carry laptop bags that look more like handbags rather than laptop cases.

To say this bag is roomy is an understatement.  In addition to this large capacity, the bottom of the bag actually unzips to reveal and expansion panel to allow this bag to hold even more.

Although there is no zippered pocket on the inside wall, there is an organizational pocket on the outside.  This pocket has a place to hold 3 pens and two devices with plenty of room to hold your charger, mouse, and external hard drive.

As I had mentioned, I have a netbook.  It actually is only slightly larger than 10" and fits perfectly in the mesh pocket on the interior wall.  I can certainly still use the padded removable insert to protect the netbook.

The Reveal Laptop Bag has a removable shoulder strap that is adjustable in length.  With the strap on, you can wear this bag like a messenger or a crossbody bag.  With the strap off, this bag can be used as a tote.  I had also considered a few designer laptop backpacks I had seen on Kolobags.com, but decided that this bag would be more versatile.

The Kroo Reveal Laptop Bag retails for $49.99.  Mine has the magenta nylon lining, but it is also available with an orange or a purple lining.  To view the full selection of laptop bags, luggage, diaper bags, phone cases, and more, visit Kolobags.com.  Through June 30th, 2011 you can save 10% off your Kolobags purchase when you checkout with Promo Code: 3GARNETS.

Thank you to Kolobags for providing a complimentary product sample for us to base this review upon and for providing a second product for our contest prize.

Review: Kolobags 17" Laptop Bag (Mobile Edge for Her)

A few months ago, I received a generous gift of a new 17" widescreen laptop from my parents. This notebook is a monster measuring 16-1/8" x 11-1/4". The first thing I thought was how in the world am I going to lug this laptop around when I attend the BlogHer 2010 convention in August? The answer was obvious . . . I had to find the perfect 17" laptop bag.

The perfect women's laptop tote to me would be something that would not only hold my laptop and charger, but a bag that could also house my essentials, such as my keys, wallet, mobile phone, digital camera, and a pen. I am not coordinated enough to carry two bags, so when I need to carry a diaper bag or a beach bag, I usually just grab my clutch and throw it in that larger bag. The perfect laptop bag would allow me to do the same thing. One other thing is that I am not a sporty person. I like a bag that looks polished, but is also versatile and perhaps does not outwardly look like a laptop bag. "The Large Milano" laptop tote made by Mobile Edge for Her sold by Kolobags had all the features I was looking for.

1) I have to say that I am impressed by the quality of this laptop bag. There was not one flaw plus it came protected in a dust bag with a Velcro flap closure.

2) What attracted me to this bag was the sophisticated look. I love that it is structured and has rolled handles. This bag would work well paired with jeans or with a suit. The black faux croc exterior allows this bag to work with most wardrobe colors schemes. I also love the contrast of the soft red suede-like interior.

3) The chrome hardware is a must since I don't wear any gold jewelry. This includes the handle attachments, the four feet that help protect the bottom of the bag, and the double zipper pulls.

4) The side of the bag is gusseted so that I can fit additional items, such as file folders or a notepad, in addition to my laptop and all its accessories.

5) This bag comes with a detachable clutch/wristlet. This is just what I need to keep my personal items safe, such as my license, cards, money, band aids, etc . . .

6) This bag's interior is divided into three main sections. The center compartment is padded and fits my large notebook computer perfectly.

7) The second section has a zippered compartment plus several organizational features, including a padded pocket for a mobile phone, a place for keys, pens, and a USB drive. One very important feature is the large lined pocket on the left with the Velcro closure. This is a Wireless Security Shield pocket and protects your bluetooth devices from hackers, spammers, and viruses.

8) The third section has a pocket that runs the full length of the bag and also has a Velcro closure. The wristlet clips to this side of the bag and can be tucked inside this pocket to keep it out of the way. This side of the bag is large enough to house your paperwork as well as your laptop charger or extra battery.

Unless I save enough money to buy a powerful netbook, you will be seeing me at BlogHer with this laptop tote and perhaps even the year after. I am determined to make sure this beautiful bag is well-cared for, so it should last for many years, plus Mobile Edge offers a lifetime warranty.

You can find this and other laptop totes plus laptop messenger bags, backpacks, laptop sleeves, iPod cases, luggage, diaper bags, and more at Kologbags.com . To keep up with the latest Kolobags news, you can find Kolobags on Facebook and Kolobags on Twitter. Through March 31st, 2010 you can save an additional 10% off your Kolobags order when you use Code: garnets10 at checkout. As always, if your order totals more than $50, you can receive free ground shipping within the United States.

Thank you to Kolobags for giving me a gift certificate to use towards this sample laptop tote on which this review was based.

2nd Blogoversary Celebration: Kolobags Laptop Tote Giveaway [CLOSED]

laptop tote contestMarch 7th, 2010 marks 3 Garnets & 2 Sapphires' 2nd Blogoversary!

To celebrate, I have partnered with Kolobags to offer my blog readers something especially useful to bloggers . . . a laptop tote! One lucky reader will walk away with one by entering the contest below.

Whether you have a monster of a laptop like mine or a little netbook, you need to protect your computer. Buying a laptop bag is almost like buying a car. There are so many choices out there for styles and colors, not to mention the features offered by each bag inside and out. Also much like a car, we want the bag to protect the precious cargo it transports.

laptop bags

If you are fashion-conscious, then you will be happy to know that you have options beyond laptop messenger bags, backpacks, and briefcases. If you want to use your own beloved bag and it is roomy enough to house your notebook computer, then you could opt for a laptop sleeve to help buffer your notebook against impact. These sleeves fit laptops with 10" to 17" screens and come in a variety of patterns to fit your personal taste.

The other option is to trade in your handbag for a fashionable, but functional laptop tote. Laptop totes are laptop bags in disguise. You cannot tell they are meant to house a notebook computer until you look inside. I personally would choose one that is roomy enough to throw a clutch bag into or has lots of pockets for your mobile phone and other essentials.

The selection of products offered by Kolobags is not limited to laptop bags, but also includes luggage, camera and iPod cases, diaper bags, and more. Through the end of March 2010, you can save 10% off your Kolobags order when you checkout with Code: garnets10. If your order totals over $50, then it ships for free within the continental U.S.

To keep up with the latest products and promotions from Kolobags, you can follow Kolobags on Twitter and fan Kolobags on Facebook. Kolobags does one monthly drawing each for their Twitter followers and their Facebook fans. The two monthly prizes are $20 gift certificates to shop with on Kolobags! So what are you waiting for?

Later this month, look for my review of this Mobile Edge 17" Laptop Tote. I had come to realize that my widescreen laptop's dimensions were on the large side, but I was very impressed that Kolobags still had several options for me to choose from in just the laptop tote category alone.

Thank you to Kolobags for providing a laptop tote for this contest free of charge.
