Review: Office Max Home Office Products

On April 2nd, 2009, I was thrilled to have had the opportunity to take part in an interactive webcast about home office organization with Office Max's Julie Kreuger and Peter Walsh, whom you may know from TLC's Clean Sweep and from the Oprah Show. About a week prior, I was sent these samples from two new home office lines from Office Max to get acquainted with.

The first line was called DiVoga. It is a cleverly designed line that is functional but also decorative. The line ranges from fun colorful choices like what is shown below to sleek fashionable desk accessories to modern metallics. DiVoga turns something as unattractive as a cork board into wall decor.

The second line was rather nondescript . . . in a good way. The [In]Place System by Peter Walsh is made to blend with any decor. It is a system that is made to streamline your home office. One of the things this system helps you accomplish is to keep everything visible. The poly is all see-thru and the tab-shaped Post-It notes allow you to label everything easily. The other thing that is great about the [In]Place System is that it is flexible. Everything is portable. The poly is durable and reusable when paired with the erasable markers used for labeling.

(I think Office Max threw in this rubber band ball to keep our children occupied so that we could play with all our new toys.)

Here are a few tips I learned about home office organization from Peter Walsh's webcast . . .

1) Keep flat surfaces clear.

2) Keep everything you use the most within an arm's reach.

3) Do not put one thing on top of another (i.e. keep things buried) or put things in stacks.

4) Keep what you need accessible. For example, don't put something in a covered file box underneath another stack of files.

5) Think about what parts of the system you really need before you purchase anymore pieces for your home office. If you don't need it, then it's just clutter.

6) Take a few minutes to clean up at the end of the day. This will make it easier to get started the next morning.

7) Do not be afraid to purge non-tax related files after 18 months.

To view the complete webcast, just follow this link to the Peter Walsh Blogcast. Peter Walsh answered one of my questions on the air! I was giddy!!

For someone like me who only has a desk in my bedroom and not a whole office space to work with, the DiVoga collection is wasted on me until we move to a larger house. I do love the [In}Place System though. It makes sense and is a good investment. I can use these on my little desk now and also in my dream home office sometime in the future. For now, my favorite piece is the File Tote shown below.

I work at the dining room table during the day. After my dear husband comes home, I move upstairs with my papers and laptop onto my bed. Don't judge me! It's comfortable and I can spread all my papers out in front of me. There is no better desk than a queen size bed! Anyways, I always have loose papers, like sheets of product information from various companies who have sent me items to review. It is much easier to keep everything organized and portable with this File Tote. If you want the perfect gift for a work-at-home mom for Mother's Day this year, give her a box of her favorite chocolates and put it in one of these file totes. Trust me . . . she'll love it!

Mamalicious Monday: Will a Day Runner Save Me?

Do you want to know what I did last Saturday night? I spent hours looking online for the right organizer for myself. Can you stand the excitement?

My husband agreed that I need "office hours" to be able to keep up with all the reviews, giveaways, blog designs, and my poor neglected Sillymonkeez.com . This doesn't even include the time I spend making personal blog posts, chatting it up on the MomDot and SuperMoms World forums.

I've tried using a PDA and I am currently using a calendar on my laptop. Neither one of those were working well for me because I need to multiple lists . . . one for high priority items and one for things I need to fit in when I can. There is something about checking something off or crossing it out on paper that helps to motivate me. With the calendar on my laptop, I sometimes snooze an item 20 times and, before you know it, it's been put off for 2 weeks.

I actually found these refills called Day Runner PRO and they actually start in April 2009. I thought that it must be fate. Well . . . I'm not sure I believe in fate, but these planning pages look like they might be the right fit for me. I use to schedule everything I did, even doing the dishes. I need to start doing that again, including scheduling activities with my children. The days just fly by and on some days I feel so guilty that we didn't do anything fun before it ended.

I hope this little book will help me. Do any of you WAHM have any tips or tricks to share about managing your time?

Join in on Mamalicious Monday, hosted by Heather of The Gift Closet, and you will be entered in a drawing to win a great prize each week you play along. All you have to do is post about something related to being a mama . . . which can just about be anything.

Giveaway & Review: Zoom Album Photo Book Kit [CLOSED]

Anyone who knows me knows that I love playing with graphic design and I love to take photos of everything and everyone around me. So when I had the opportunity to create my own photo books at home, I jumped at the chance.

A Zoom Album Photo Book Kit, comes with everything you need to create 3 photo books at home. All you need is some digital photos, a color inkjet printer, and of course a notebook, a PC, or a Mac.

I decided to make a book of my children with photographs of them from birth through present. Each 3" x 3" book is designed to show 12 photos plus one on the cover. This is the book that I made . . .

I was impressed by how professional the exterior of the book looked without the use of any scissors or glue.

These are the first pages of my book. The page on the left is how I wanted the entire book to be formatted. As you can see in the following photos, that was not how it turned out. I was glad that the kit came with enough to make 3 books because the first one was just a test run.

There are two parts where I ran into trouble. First of all, I thought that if I selected the desired layout, that every page would be uniform. It turns out that you need to select the layout for each page. The reason why I did not catch it was because on the page to add the text, all the pages were shown like that very first page of my book.

The second spot where I had problems was that the software does not show you where the frames begin and end. So when I was adding the text, the text boxes (which can only have a colored background) overlapped with the photos and with the frame. It would have been more helpful if the software showed you the actual placement and shape of the photo and the frame by the time you are entering the text and trying to figure out the placement of the text boxes.

If you keep the above mentioned things in mind, I think you will end up with a book you are pleased with. Here are some other things I would like to point out about this Zoom Album Kit . . .

1) These books would make nice inexpensive personalized gifts for almost anyone.
2) I think becoming a Photobook Coach is a great idea for anyone who is already in sales (for cosmetics, candles, kitchen items, etc . . .) who has an established clientele.
3) I also think a photo-savvy mom could start a nice little business making either personalized photobooks with the customer's photos or using her own photos to make themed gift books for special occasions, perhaps with some original poetry.
4) The quality of the photos is exceptional. I used a lower end photo quality inkjet printer and the photos are very clear.
5) Color ink is pretty expensive, so after you make your first cover and set of photo pages successfully, you might consider skipping the test prints on your second and third books.

Thank you to Zoom Albums and the Family Review Network for this opportunity.

What you can win:
The prize for this contest is one Zoom Album Photo Book Kit to create up to 3 photo books of your own. (FYI: This software does not work well with Hewlett Packard All-in-One Printers or with laser printers.)

New Years Resolutions?

I don't normally make New Year's resolutions because I have a history of not following through with them. I don't even think I last 24 hours.

I do have a lot of things I want to change in my life in 2009 though. So I am going to focus on the top two which mainly have to do with my feeling like my life is out of control . . .

1) I am going to make a schedule for everything I have to do and try to not do so much work during the day so that I can spend more time with my children. Amongst those things are:

- Writing for my blogs (blog posts, memes, reviews, giveaways, sponsored posts, etc . . . )
- Reconnecting with all the great bloggers I have been neglecting
- Being a moderator on the SuperMoms World Forums
- Being part of the MomDot Street Team
- Maintaining the free blog listings on MomDot.com
- Creating new product designs for Sillymonkeez.com
- Creating new blog designs for ABOG Designs
- Custom orders for both Sillymonkeez.com and ABOG Designs
- Household chores

2) Since I had the radioactive iodine treatment in May of 2008, I have started to gain weight because my thryoid is starting to become underactive. I am going to have to make a schedule that includes exercising. I use to just fit it in whenever possible, but my busy life has caused that to dwindle down to almost nothing. I'm still having problems dealing with the way my body is after having carried twins, I don't need extra weight gain because of my thyroid. I remember when I was in college, how traumatic it was for me to break 100lbs. Now I long for that problem. ;P

Will any of you out there be making any resolutions this year and do you think you'll stick to them?

A Vending Venture

Before we settled upon starting our silk-screening business, my husband and I looked into many different possibilities as far as a small business was concerned. One of the possibilities we seriously considered was Soda/Snack Vending Machines and Gumball Machines. Since this business was to be a source of supplementary income, the appeal was that it was a pretty low pressure make-your-own-hours type of business where you were your own boss.

Purchasing the actual Vending Machines is the most important part of launching such a business. This investment plays a huge part in whether your business succeeds or fails. So how do you choose? Well, 1.800.Vending, a company who has been featured on CNN and The Wall Street Journal, has come up with something that is very innovative.

1.800.Vending has "Healthy You" Vending Machines for Sale. This machine could be the perfect way to go because it is a reaction to the times. In this generation of "going green" and living smarter, this type of vending just makes sense. This machine is designed to offer healthy organic snacks and beverages . . . products made by the same names the world has grown to love, such as Kellogg and Pepsi.

In closing, if you are going to start a new long-term business today, does it not make sense to choose one that is on the cutting edge over one that is slowly dwindling? The answer appears to be obvious to me.

Trisha Haas from Bambina Ballerina Makes Beautiful Bow Holders . . .

Trisha Haas from Bambina Ballerina makes beautiful bow holders, but that's not all she does. Take a peak at her beautiful creations as featured on A Blog of Goodies. If you are dying to get your hands on one of these hair bow holders, you'll have to get in line.

When I said that's not all Trisha Haas does, I wasn't kidding. Aside from the her all important jobs of being a wife and mother, this WAHM also is the brains behind MomDot.com. I don't know how she does it. Running the MomDot website and the MomDot parenting forum & blogging community is a full time job and then some.

The point of this post is to thank Trisha Haas for being such a great mentor to all the WAHMs out there who are trying to start home-based businesses so they can remain at home with their children. She bends over backwards to support these mommy businesses and shares the lessons she has learn through her own business ventures.

Thank you for all you do, Trisha!!
