Regain a Sense of Organization Using Playroom Labels

Thank you to Kidecals for providing complimentary product samples for us to complete this toy organization project. All opinions expressed are my own.

I am a firm believer that everything should have a place and that, if I go through the trouble of making sure something has a place, then our children should be able to clean up their toys 100% at the end of the day.  Unfortunately, they just do not seem to grasp that logic.  For example, a couple of years ago, my husband and I bought a basic wired baker's rack type shelving and filled it with plastic bins about the size of shoeboxes plus some larger ones.  We helped the children separate their toys into each bin and felt pretty great about how organized all their small toys were.  This feeling did not last long though . . .

It did not take long for us to realize that our children were not putting the toys back in the right bins even though they could see what was inside each bin.  At the time, we just tried to police it, which was exhausting.  Now that our 6 year old twins can read, I am able to clearly label each bin, so that they cannot claim to put something in the wrong place accidentally.

Today's Project:  Small Toy Organization

SUPPLIES NEEDED:
Plastic Storage Bins (shoebox size or larger)
Custom Playroom Labels (2 sheets per carousel)

Step 1.  Make a list of items you need to keep organized.  Then visit Kidecal's Playroom Labels product page to create your labels.  Each sheet of labels comes with 6 large labels to use on the plastic bins and 12 small labels to use on the carousel organizer.  Each field corresponds to a label in the preview, so you can see what the final labels will look like.  If you are really organized, you can color code your labels so that all red labels belong to one child and all yellow ones belong to another.  (I am not that organized.)  These labels are both dishwasher and laundry-safe, so they will work on both smooth surfaces and on fabrics, such as canvas.

Step 2.  After you have assigned a toy category for each plastic bin, carefully place the larger labels on the correct bins.  If you need to reposition them, you will need to remove them immediately before the adhesive sets.

Step 3.  After you have decided what should go in each pocket on the carousels, place the correct small label on each pocket.  Try to plan ahead.  For example, it seemed to make more sense to put the Barbie dolls on the bottom tier since they were the tallest of all the small toys.

Step 4.  This is the toughest part of this project.  Get your children to put everything in the empty bins and pockets.  I think if they do the work of finishing this project themselves, they may be more motivated to keep everything organized.  (Of course, this is just a theory.)

The things I liked most about these Playroom Labels are that they are easier to read than any labels I've ever made with a label maker, I could be as specific or as general as I wanted with the labels (ex. Action Figures vs. Star Wars Figures), and the labels stick amazingly well on fabric, even on the extremely wrinkled canvas pockets.  Each sheet of 18 custom waterproof and laundry-safe labels sells for $15.00 plus there is Free Shipping on all orders.

Girl's Easy-to-Install Princess Carriage Bed Tent

Our 5 year old daughter has been quite a nervous sleeper the past few months.  I think it started with the increase in the number of insects and spiders that visit her room since winter turned into Spring.  Nobody knows why her room seems to be the favorite for creepy crawlies out of all the rooms in the house, but it is.  This has been causing her some anxiety and she often has difficulty falling asleep right away or falling back to sleep if she wakes up in the middle of the night.  If there happens to be a spider, even if it is way up tucked into the corner on the ceiling across the room, she will not likely fall asleep until her Dad removes the spider. This is why I thought it would be a great idea to try using this bed tent from CP Toys in our daughter's room.

Of course the Pop-Up Princess Carriage Bed Tent is not really going to protect our daughter from insects and spiders, but it does create a haven for her, in which she feels feels safer.  The tent only has one opening at the foot of the bed, which has a Velcro closure at the center and at the bottom corners of the two flaps.  Since we put this tent up on her bed, she has not had any problems falling asleep.

This bed tent is a CP Toys Exclusive.  It was very easy to set-up since it is a pop-up tent.  After removing it from its zippered nylon storage case, the tent just pops up into the shape of a carriage.  The only assembly required is to put the three pieces of the flag together and to slide it into place on the roof of the tent.

The bed tent is secured onto the twin size mattress by elastics that go under the four corners and by a strap that goes around the belly of the mattress and Velcros to the tent underneath the tent's skirt.  The tent fits right around the existing bed sheet and bedskirt, so if you ever need to remove the tent, the bed is still made.

It is in the middle of summer currently, so my main concern was about the possibility that our daughter would be too hot sleeping in a tent all night.  It turns out that the mesh allowed for plenty of ventilation and she could still feel the air circulating from her ceiling fan.

Our daughter also has plenty of room to sit up in bed and she should be able to use this tent for a few years if she wishes.  The only thing she needs to get used to is not being able to reach her nightstand for a book or a sip of water.  Maybe for the next one, the product designer can add a little flap or a window on each side of the tent?

I also want to point out that our two sons have also been getting in the tent every chance they get.  It's the closest thing they have to a fort and is perfect for various pretend play scenarios.  If you happen to have cats, then you may be interested to know that one of our cats has decided that our daughter's pillow inside the bed tent is her new favorite spot . . .

The Pop-Up Princess Carriage Bed Tent retails for $69.99, but is currently on sale for $39.99.  It really is a quality item and is both designed and constructed very well.  You can find this and other imaginative and educational toys at www.CPToy.com.

Seeing Stars . . . Using Stars to Decorate Your Home

July is a time of year when stars remind us of a feeling of patriotism and an appreciation of our country's independence.  However, the rest of the year, stars can signify astronomy, the holidays, a nursery rhyme, a rockstar, and so much more.  So when you are thinking about decorating (or redecorating) a room in your home, why not consider adding some star accents?  To me a star is one of the most versatile symbols you can use in your home.  A star always represents something positive, whether it is a person shining brightly, dreams of the future, or a job well done.

When our first born son was an infant, I decorated his nursery in a Cow Jumped Over the Moon theme.  I had so much fun doing it and even sponged stars onto the ceiling.  My husband and I also handcrafted a growth chart that was covered in a star print fabric.  Our son is 8 now and probably does not remember a thing about his first bedroom, but I have fond memories of it.

Here are some ideas that may inspire you to bring the magic of stars into your home . . .

Easy Craft: DIY Dinosaur Train Memo Board

Dinosaur Train is a cartoon on PBS Kids that is beloved by many children, my son Quinn included. They have a new online club called Nature Trackers where children and their families can learn about nature and doing good things for our environment. In the Nature Trackers Club, you can have fun exploring nature, respecting the planet, having outdoor adventures, collecting items, observing nature in action, and more. Nature Trackers challenge themselves to get outdoors and moving and make new discoveries every day and the club offers new activities and challenges every month to get you going. For example, one of March’s activities was making a windsock.

As a part of National Craft Month in March, we were given the chance to do a Dinosaur Train-themed craft. A few months back, Quinn got a Dinosaur Train mural sticker for his room, so when I was offered this fabric, I was excited to do something fun to match his dinosaur room. We decided to make a Dinosaur Train bulletin board to hold pictures and other small momentos he wants to keep. I got the idea on QuiltingTreasures.com but did vary a bit from the listed instructions because of having issues finding some of the materials listed.

(Click any photo to enlarge)

SUPPLIES NEEDED
Dinosaur Train fabric (amount depends on size of board you want to make)
¼ inch dense foam or cork board
Ribbon or yarn in coordinating colors
Push pins or thumb tacks
Hot glue gun & extra hot glue sticks
Sharp Scissors

Step 1:  Cut your fabric to fit the board with a couple inches extra to fasten around the back.

Step 2:  Pull the fabric tight around the back and secure with push pins and/or hot glue (I actually did a little of both). Make sure you are pulling it tight each time you secure so the front is smooth. For the corners, I folded them much like wrapping gifts so they’d be tight and not bunched.

Step 3:  Flip the board back over and cut your ribbon or yarn to go across the board diagonally, parallel to the one before, leaving an overlap for securing in the back.

Step 4:  Using the hot glue gun, place a small dot of glue on the edge of the board, and hold down the ribbon until the glue dries. Once dry, gently pull the ribbon across the board, making sure it’s taut, and secure on the opposite end with another dot of hot glue. Repeat until all the parallel lines of ribbon are secured and the glue is dried.

Step 5:  Repeat step four using the ribbon but this time intersecting the other ones which will make small squares (see pictures). Use a dab of glue at every meeting of ribbon as well as on the ends. Once all the glue is dry, flip the board and glue down the ends of ribbon in the back.

Step 6:  Using the push pins, put one at each intersection of ribbon for extra security.

Step 7 (optional):  Using push pins or glue (I actually used both), fasten a piece of ribbon or yarn to the back for hanging the bulletin board.

This project was very easy and only took me about 45 minutes to complete but it looks great. It’s not professional looking by any means, but it looks good nonetheless. I used the extra fabric to make up some simple pillowcases and as a sash for one of Quinn’s stuffed animal dinosaurs. His room looks great with the new additions and all were very easy to make; even for a craft-challenged person like me.

I really loved all the Dinosaur Train fabrics available, but the yellow one I used for the board was my favorite. It was cheery and colorful and looks great with his mural. You can purchase these fabrics at many major retailers nationwide, such as Hancock’s. To find a retailer in your area, visit QuiltingTreasures.com. You can also follow the Jim Henson Company on Facebook and on Twitter, as well as PBS Kids on Facebook and Twitter. To watch Dinosaur Train on PBS Kids, check your local listings.

Kirkland's Versatile Ruffled Bed Rest Pillow

Something I had on my list to buy since we moved our daughter into her own bedroom is a bed rest pillow.  Since her room is on the smaller side and she was not willing to give up her toy kitchen, doll cradle, or doll high chair, we had to forgo having an accent chair in her room.  As a result, she usually sits on her bed when she wants to read or watch television.  I had been looking for the right bed rest pillow for about 6 months now.  The children's pillows looked so tiny.  The full size pillows have all seemed to be very dense and solid in order for the pillow to sit up on its own and to offer back support.  I was worried that these less-than-cushy pillows would be uncomfortable for my daughter.

When Kirkland's offered to send us their Cream Bed Rest Pillow, I thought it might be just the thing for my daughter's room.  The color is very neutral and the ruffles definitely make it a good fit for my daughter's girly decor.  I think the style of this pillow would continue to appeal to my 5 year old daughter through her tween and teenage years.

(Click any photo to enlarge)

So, was the pillow comfortable?  I was worried when I saw the photo of this pillow that the ruffles would be lumpy to sit back against, but that is not the case at all.  In fact, the ruffles give the extra plushness that all the other bed rest pillows lacked.  This coupled with the faux micro mink fabric (similar to velour) made this pillow soft to the touch and very comfy to use.  Our 8 year old son is asking for one for his bed now and he often steals this one when my daughter is not looking.

For a limited time, the Cream Bed Rest Pillow is on promotion for just $29.99 (regularly $34.99) on Kirklands.com.  It would make a very thoughtful Mother's Day gift for anyone who likes to read, watch TV, or use their laptop in bed.  You can find creative home decorating ideas by visiting MyKirklands.com, Kirkland's on Facebook, and Kirkland's on Twitter.

5 Easy Ways to Give New Life to a Girl's Bedroom

Two summers ago, when we moved our daughter from a toddler bed into a twin size bed, I began to do a little redecorating.  We added a new nightstand, a dress-up carousel, and some beautiful children's wall art.  Now that our daughter is getting a little older and has begun developing her own tastes, I thought we should do a few things to add a little more of her personality to the room.

There are some very easy ways to accomplish this.  Some of them are rather inexpensive.  I tried to choose mostly non-licensed items that our daughter will find to be a good fit at least through her preteen years.

Here are 5 easy ways to redecorate a girl's bedroom:

1)  Change the window coverings.  Just adding a new set of window panels to pick up at least one of the colors in the room will help pull together the room nicely.  New curtains always makes a room feel brand new.

2)  Add some wall decals.  It literally took me 5 minutes to put up 8 flower wall decals.  It really made a long wall look much less empty.  We did ours in a wave pattern that continues onto a second wall so that it would bring the eye up and down repeatedly.

3)  Change the bedding.  Kids bedding is one of the funnest things to shop for.  It is always nice to let your child have some input about what you choose.  You can even go as far as ordering custom children's bedding where you can select the various fabrics that will make up the bedding set.  We went with an all-cotton set called Danielle's Daisies.  Our daughter loved the bold pattern and I particularly liked the 3-dimensional flowers.  I steamed the flower petals flat again after washing the set, but could have easily have left them to look curled like natural flowers.

4)  Change the lamp shade.  One of my next projects is to give the old yellowed lamp shade on our daughter's white candlestick lamp a makeover.  I have not decided exactly what I will do yet.  I am torn between a ruffled lamp shade, a 3-dimensional flower lamp shade, and a tutu lamp shade.  Of course, you could always just purchase a new shade.

5)  Add something handmade or hand-decorated.  Nothing adds personality to a room better than something handmade.  I plan on decorating the frame and changing the hanging magnetic white board pictured above into a magnetic hair bow holder for our daughter.  The Internet is full of wonderful tutorials, many of which are fairly easy, for ways to add that special touch to a room.

Back To School 2011: Hello Kitty Table Lamp by Sparkle Bee

Our 4.5 year old daughter is a huge fan of Hello Kitty!  She has everything from a Hello Kitty jacket to a Hello Kitty handbag.  One thing she did not have was a Hello Kitty lamp.  Well, Sparkle Bee from Marino Adriani, a popular brand of children's and teen's electronics, happened to announce that Hello Kitty and Paul Frank will be the focus of their product line for Fall 2011.

Although this lamp would have been perfect on my daughter's desk, it was more needed on her nightstand.  Her previous lamp was battery-operated, a result of my trying to eliminate the hazards of electrical cords when she was younger, was no longer necessary.  She was more than ready to upgrade to a big girl's lamp.

It is very apparent that this Hello Kitty Lamp is well-made and sturdy.  This lamp will not likely be accidentally knocked over by our children.  The pull-chain is actually only there for aesthetic reasons.  The lamp turns on and off with the push of a button, which is much more user-friendly for a child.

This lamp can take up to a 60 watt standard light bulb, but can also be used with compact fluorescent bulbs.  The lampshade is lovely when lit up and gives off a warm light.  I also love that the lamp bears a chrome Hello Kitty insignia on the front, which adds to the perceived value of this lamp, should you be considering it for a gift.

Sparkle Bee offers many other children's electronics products, such as clock radios, telephones, boomboxes, and more.  Visit SparkleBee.com and Sparkle Bee on Facebook to view their latest products.
