How to Get Kids to Eat Local Food on Vacation (plus a Conejo al Salmorejo Recipe)

Conejo al Salmorejo - Photo from Flicker
All parents would probably agree that children hate change – especially when it comes to food. Whenever we go out to eat, our little ones always pick the exact same things: one chooses plain tomato and cheese pizza and the other has chicken nuggets, both of which are topped with an abundance of ketchup.

We recently snapped up a cheap flight to Tenerife in the Canary Islands. There are loads of great deals going at the minute if you know where to look – Jet2holidays in the UK and Air Berlin in Germany are both great places to begin. Our hotel advertised a buffet restaurant and I was looking forward to encouraging the kids to try all sorts of different things, but my dreams were dashed after they were still gobbling up plates of chicken nuggets and pizza on day six of our holiday.

Even though we were staying at an all-inclusive hotel, I decided to take them out to a restaurant – preferably one which didn’t serve chicken nuggets or pizza. I’d asked around at the hotel and heard great things about El Cordero, so on the final night of our vacation I packed everyone into the car and headed to the restaurant.

After a short drive we arrived at the eatery and the children were instantly mesmerized by the giant lamb-shaped bush in front of the restaurant. It took a few seconds to click, but the bush made a bit more sense when I remembered that El Cordero is Spanish for The Lamb. I hustled everyone up the stairs and a few minutes later we were all sat at our table waiting for our server to bring us our drinks.

Looking at other diners, I couldn’t help but notice that no one seemed to have a menu. Everything fell into place when the server returned with our drinks and began reeling off a list of everything that was available this evening in a mixture of Spanish and English. After a blank stare or two on my part, the server suggested a mixed platter to share which I happily accepted.

I asked the kids if they were hungry and the answer was a resounding no – something which I was sure would change the minute they smelled the delicious barbecue aroma of grilled meat. When our servers brought dishes laden with all sorts of cuts accompanied by generous portions of Canarian potatoes and salad the children’s eyes grew like saucers.

I offered to serve the children and – as expected – they turned me down so I filled my plate up and began enjoying my dinner. I casually chatted to the little ones whilst they kept looking at each other, almost as if they were challenging the other one to give in first.

No more than two minutes went by before my little girl piped up with: “Chicken leg is like chicken nuggets. Please can I have one?” I gave her a chicken leg, whilst slipping a few other things on her plate, too. I asked her brother if he wanted any chicken and he just shrugged so I filled his plate up as well.

Even though they were remarkably skeptical to start off with, both the kids were soon devouring everything on their plate and going for more, something which I was absolutely thrilled about. At the end of the meal I asked them what they’re favorite dish was and I was shocked. They both pointed at the same thing – the rabbit. Granted, I hadn’t told them it was rabbit but even after I did it hadn’t fazed them. Not wanting to miss out on this huge opportunity, I persuaded the server to give me the recipe for the rabbit so I could make it at home.

Rabbit can often be difficult to get a hold of. If you can’t find it in the store, or simply don’t like the idea of eating it, this dish is just as good when made with chicken. If you’d like to have a go at making Canarian rabbit (Conejo al Salmorejo) at home, here’s my adaptation of the recipe given to me by the server at El Cordero. It will make enough to serve four people. Whilst the traditional way to cook this dish is in a frying pan, I cooked it on the grill over the summer and it turned out wonderfully.

RECIPE:  Conejo al Salmorejo

Ingredients
1 whole rabbit or ½ a chicken
¼ cup olive oil
Pinch of salt
1 chilli
4 cloves of garlic, chopped
1 tablespoon sweet paprika
½ teaspoon dried rosemary
½ teaspoon dried thyme
½ cup white wine
2 tablespoons vinegar

1. Cut the rabbit or chicken into chunks. Rub in a little salt and place the meat in a shallow baking dish.

2. Finely slice the chilli and remove the seeds if you don’t like your food too hot. Peel and chop the garlic.

3. Place the chilli, garlic, paprika, rosemary, thyme, white wine and vinegar into the food processor and pulse a few times until everything is finely chopped – this is your marinade.

4. Pour the marinade over the meat and leave in the refrigerator overnight.

5. When you’re ready to cook, add the olive oil into the frying pan and set the heat to medium. Remove the meat from the baking dish and fry for 8 minutes on each side or until each piece is golden all over. When all the meat is cooked, use a slotted spoon to remove the pieces and leave to one side on a plate.

6. Drain the last of the oil out of the pan and pour in the marinade. Turn the heat down to low and put the meat back in the pan. Leave to simmer for ten minutes or until most of the liquid has been reduced.

7. Serve the rabbit or chicken with the sauce spooned on top and alongside Canarian potatoes.

If you’re having a tough job of getting your little ones to eat local food when on vacation, try doing what I did. Order a large platter for everyone to share so the kids don’t feel like the spotlight is on them. If your kids don’t dive in straight away, just let them get familiar with the food and carry on with your own meal. Within a few minutes curiosity will without a doubt get the better of them and they’ll be very keen to try whatever you’re eating.

Silly Monkey Stories: Will the Hunger Never Cease?

Luke is a personality. Luke and his charm will get him far in life (one way or another). But one of the dozens of charming things he does turned out to be not so charming last week.

Luke is always hungry, ALWAYS. He will complain about being hungry while eating a meal. He will ask about dinner while eating lunch.

Apparently Luke has been talking non-stop to his reading teachers about how hungry he is. Well, his teachers aren't accustomed to Luke’s line of hunger jokes or charm and took his non-stop complaints of hunger very seriously. After class last Thursday, one of Luke's teachers approached my wife with some serious inquiries about when and how we feed him. I half expect to get a call from DSS (Department of Social Services)!

I explained to him that we (his immediate family) all think his jokes about being hungry are funny, but he can’t make those jokes outside of the house any longer. He understood and promised he would stop.

When I got home from work today I was dying to ask him about reading class and if he had managed to keep his hunger humor to himself. This was his response:

“I didn't talk about being hungry today like you asked.....I talked about how tired I was!”

I just smacked my head and expect a call anytime....

Silly Monkey Story: Food Obsession

Our nearly 6 year old son has always been obsessed with food.  He is not obsessed in a way that causes him to overeat, but he is always thinking about his next meal.

He starts his day off with getting out of bed and asking, "What's for breakfast?"  Then at breakfast, he usually asks, "Am I buying or bringing lunch today?  What am I having?"  Then when I pick the children up from the bus stop, he asks, "Can I have a snack?"  Then while he is eating his snack, he usually asks, "What's for dinner?"

This is why I was not surprised when I overheard part of a conversation he was having with his Dad the other day.  I believe they were talking about how our son is too tired to get up in the mornings sometimes.  Our son's explanation for this was . . .

"I'm too tired to go to school everyday, except for the days when there is popcorn chicken, super nachos, or pizza for lunch!"

What Foods Most Often Cause Food Poisoning?

My family has been pretty lucky in that we have rarely had any cases of food poisoning between the five of us.  We usually do not eat leftovers after they have been in the refrigerator for more than a day.  I was brought up to not waste food though, so I may have cooked eggs a day or two after they have expired or used baby spinach after the leaves had begun to wilt.  Well, according to the infographic below, it turns out that there are many things that can cause foods to be dangerous that are out of my control.  I did find, however, that am guilty of Mistake #5, although not very often.  Which food handling mistakes are you guilty of making?

My Photos (W/E 2-26-11)

I took some great photos of the children yesterday.  Sometimes it is like pulling teeth to get them to just be themselves.  Other times, they are in the right mood and things just click.  Yesterday was one of those days.  The last photo reminds me of how much our three really love each other even though they fight like cats and dogs sometimes.

Silly Monkey Stories: One Track Mind

For someone whom I have to fight with quite a lot to finish his food, our preschool-aged son thinks and talks about food surprisingly often.  One of the first things he asks when he wakes up in the morning is, "What's for breakfast?"  Then during breakfast, he'll ask, "What's for lunch?"  Then during our afternoon snack he usually asks, "What's for dinner?"

The other morning, I was trying to wake him up so we could take his big brother to the school bus stop.  The first thing out of his mouth was:  "Then are we going to have breakfast, then lunch, then get Jake from the bus, then have a snack, and then have dinner?"  All I could say to that was, "Yes."

My Photos (W/E 10-9-10)

I had lunch at the mall the other day with my husband and our twin preschoolers. Of course the twins wanted to have McDonald's at the food court, so my husband and I agreed we would find something else for ourselves. I haven't eaten at the food court in a couple of months and I noticed a new Thai restaurant. I went over to check out the food and found a delightful surprise . . . a noodle bar. They offered four different types of noodle soup. I opted for the Wonton and Noodle Soup. I have to say that I was amazed at the quality. I am going to eat there every time I go to the mall's food court from now on. Tasty wontons, an abundance of noodles, and large pieces of bok choy sure beats the typical greasy mall food!

Ruby Tuesday: Dessert Platter

This was one of the dessert platters served at the Bumble Bee Foods Reception during the BlogHer 2010 convention. Even with all the different types of cookies and chocolaty fudge offered on this platter, I found the strawberries to be most irresistible out of everything.

Which item would you have wanted to try first?

Ruby Tuesday: Brats in My House?

These are the kind of brats that are always welcome in our house! My husband and I love to have beer brats grilled and topped with onions and peppers. It's a shame that our two youngest children do not care for onions and peppers. Luckily our oldest likes his brats cooked this way too, so it's 3 against 2!

Ruby Tuesday: You Have Been Served

This is a photo of a triple layer cake that was homemade by a very sweet lady I only get to see once or twice a year.

I think I was drawn to taking a photo of it because whoever cut it sliced it so evenly. I liked the pattern of lines it made.

Oh, and yes! It was delicious!!

We attended a dinner for bloggers this past week. It was the first date night my husband and I had in months. It was really nice to go somewhere different. We usually go to "our restaurant".
